Attracting New Customers

Josie Leavitt - February 4, 2013

People forward me the most interesting book-related articles. On Sunday, my young staffer sent me a link for an article from the Guardian about how a Scottish library is trying to get new patrons. They are offering classes.
While this is not a novel idea — a lot of libraries offer educational opportunities — the Mayfield library in Dalkeith, Scotland offered a pole-dancing class as a way to get people to take out more books. Stripper pole dancing classes. I couldn’t help but scratch my head at this idea. Then I really started to think about it, and it’s genius.
The class was open to anyone over sixteen, and it was scheduled to run on Love Your Library Day. What a smart way to get folks to come to the library, if for no other reason than checking out the class. Pole dancing is supposed to be great exercise and it’s my guess that after class folks might want to take out Fifty Shades of Grey, just to keep the mood going.
This whole idea got me thinking about what libraries and bookstores will do to get new customers. Sure, we could have a sale or bring in a great author, but is that enough? Do we need to offer classes in things that have no real bearing on books? Maybe. And what’s wrong with that? The more time people spend on their devices the less time they spend with other people. Bookstores and libraries help keep those real human connections alive. And if it takes a pole dancing class to get someone in the library, so be it. They might take a break and see a book they just have to have and honestly, does it matter what brought them to the library or bookstore? What’s important is that they came and now it’s our job to make them want to come back.
While pole dancing is not something my store is likely to offer, I’m curious what sorts of classes you would like to see run at your local bookstore or library.

When a Cover Can Ruin a Book

Josie Leavitt - February 1, 2013

I know I’ve ranted about my utter distaste of covers with photographs of real people, especially teenagers on them, but a friend shared a cover with me that made me gasp. There is a new book that has the first three Anne of Green Gables in one collection.
I think having the first three books together is a great idea, as folks often read the first one and come racing back for the next two in the series, so it’s good to make their lives easier and let them stay with Anne uninterrupted. The problem is the cover.  See the cover to the left? Does that look like the skinny red-headed, pre-teen Anne I loved as a child? Um, not exactly. The woman, and I mean woman–there’s nothing pre-teen about her, gracing this cover looks nothing like Anne. She actually looks likes she’s the kind of kid who would sneak out of her boarding school to smoke cigarettes with the math teacher.
First off, why is she a blonde? Secondly, what’s with the come hither look? Thirdly, why was this approved?
Covers of books are very important, I understand that, but there are principles that I think covers should follow.
1. The cover, especially one with a photo or drawing of a main character, should actually look like that character. If the main character is a redhead or a person of color, the cover should reflect that.
2. The cover should accurately reflect the time period of the book. The Anne in this cover looks like she just snuck out of boarding school to smoke with a teacher.
3. The cover should set the mood for the tone of the book.
4. The cover should pull the reader in.
I don’t mean to criticize only this book, but it was such a glaring example of a cover gone awry, I couldn’t help myself. So, my plea to all publishers: please stop thinking that only books with photographs sell, because this is not true. And, please design the cover after you’ve read the book.

A Little Braggin’

Elizabeth Bluemle - January 31, 2013

Recently, when I was working on updating The Stars So Far project, which rounds up the year’s starred children’s books, I noticed something that made my heart happy: two of my twelve classmates from the Vermont College MFA program in Writing for Children and Young Adults (now called VCFA) have books on the list: Kelly Bingham for Z Is for Moose (six stars), and Leda Schubert for Monsieur Marceau: Actor Without Words (three stars). Leda’s book also just won the 2013 Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children, given by the National Council of Teachers of English. And Kelly’s hilarious picture book about an overly enthusiastic, impatient moose (read: a typical four-year-old) was on several national mock Caldecott lists. Their achievements this year have made all of us in that little VCMFA gang proud!
There were only a baker’s dozen of us in that class, but for a tiny group, they pack a lot of writerly oomph! Down to a person, that group was and is wildly gifted in a variety of ways. When I look at all they’ve accomplished in the years since we were mostly unpublished authors honing our craft at that amazing program in Montpelier, I am so proud of the work they’ve done and the riches they’ve added to this world, both in the realm of books and beyond.
This is my chance to do a little bragging, so here they are, alphabetically presented – the Vermont College MFA-WCYA Class of 2004 — or, as we sort of disjointedly and non-unanimously called ourselves: The Zoo.
Andrew Auseon — Andy was our token male in the class, as well as one of its youngest members. Andy writes terrific edgy, funny YA novels—FREAK MAGNET (HarperTeen, 2010), JO-JO AND THE FIENDISH LOT (HarperTeen, 2009), FUNNY LITTLE MONKEY (Harcourt, 2005)—and has co-written a hilarious middle-grade novel, ALIENATED (Aladdin, 2009) with Hollywood screenwriter David O. Russell. He is also a celebrated video game designer (which makes all of us extremely cool by association).
Kelly Bingham — In addition to six-star picture books–the aforementioned Z IS FOR MOOSE, illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky (Greenwillow, 2012)–Kelly writes novels in verse. SHARK GIRL (Candlewick, 2007) is about a girl adjusting to life after her arm is bitten off by a shark. It was written about a year before Bethany Hamilton had her accident; you can imagine how freaky it was for Kelly and the rest of us who had read the manuscript when that news broke. Kelly took a little writing hiatus while raising her family, but has come back full force. Her sequel to Shark Girl, FORMERLY, SHARK GIRL (Candlewick, 2013), will hit bookshelves in May, and there are other books in the works. I believe Kelly also may be the only member of our gang with actual merch (a plush doll of Moose from Merrymakers).
Elizabeth Bluemle — You all know me, but mainly in my context of blogging here in Publishers Weekly’s Shelftalker about children’s bookselling, and as co-owner of The Flying Pig Bookstore in Shelburne, Vt. Wearing my authorial hat, I’ve got three picture books with Candlewick Press — MY FATHER THE DOG (2006), DOGS ON THE BED (2008) and HOW DO YOU WOKKA-WOKKA (2010), with a fourth, TAP TAP BOOM BOOM due in 2014. I was thrilled to receive the 2007 Wanda Gág Read Aloud Book Award (for ages birth to age 8) for My Father the Dog from Minnesota State University Moorhead, and the 2010 Kids’ Choice Award from the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia for How Do You Wokka-Wokka? I rarely wear my author hat in the ShelfTalker blog and feel sheepish tooting my own horn here, so on to the next Zoo member!
Bethany Dellinger — In addition to creating a beautiful big family in the years since we were at Vermont College, Bethany writes a blog called “Literary Crush,” about children’s and young adult literature. I love how she invites readers into her posts: “I am a YA writer with a serious case of literary crush. It’s not that I’m unfaithful, it’s just that I love stories…especially those that shed light on the human condition. Come ponder the things that makes some books a fling and others a life-long love. And please join the conversation!” In June 2010, Bethany’s YA mythic fantasy manuscript, THE DARKENING, (now titled DARK WHIMSY) won an Honorable Mention in the First Annual SCBWI Carolina’s Art and Writing Contest judged by Sarah Shumway of Katherine Tegen Books.
Laura Greene: Laura is a keen-eyed historical fiction and political writer for teens and adults. Her manuscripts take years of research, and I believe at least one, if not two, is finished and out making the rounds. I still remember a scene Laura read about a young boy in an ancient marketplace; it’s pretty impressive when a scene still sticks in the brain after ten years! Laura also conceived, spearheaded, and established The Alumni Gift Award Scholarship Fund at Vermont College, which is given to a student who demonstrates some or all of the following characteristics: leadership, inspiration, support of fellow students, and/or contributions to the program.
Helen Hemphill — A lovely Southerner with that enviable southern flair for storytelling and combining heart with humor, Helen has published three marvelous novels that deserve a wide audience: LONG GONE DADDY (Front Street, 2006), RUNAROUND (Front Street, 2007), THE ADVENTUROUS DEEDS OF DEADWOOD JONES (Front Street, 2008). She also teaches writing for the Highlights Foundation and will be doing a workshop with Linda Sue Park and guest Alvina Ling in October 2013. Keep your eyes out for more books from Helen!
Karyn Henley —Karyn was one of the members of the Zoo who came into the Vermont College program already published, though it took us quite a while to know that about her. (She was and is extremely modest about her successes.) She has written and published dozens of children’s books, including THE BEGINNER’S BIBLE, which (I just discovered via Karyn’s website) sold 5 million copies and was translated into 17 languages! Holy cow! Most recently, Karyn has written two fantasy novels of a projected trilogy entitled The Angelaeon Circle, beginning with BREATH OF ANGEL (Waterbrook, 2011) and EYE OF THE SWORD (Waterbrook, 2012).
Michelle Roehm-McCann —Michelle came into the VCFA program already a children’s book editor and author. During her time in the program, she published a fabulous picture book based on her interviews with a heroic Jewish woman, Luba Tryszynka-Frederick, who saved dozens of children’s lives during her time in a concentration camp. LUBA: THE ANGEL OF BERGEN-BELSEN (Tricycle, 2003) won several awards, including a Jane Addams Peace Prize Honor. Another of Michelle’s books, GIRLS WHO ROCKED THE WORLD: HEROINES FROM JOAN OF ARC TO MOTHER TERESA was recently reissued (Beyond Books, 2012), along with a new title, BOYS WHO ROCKED THE WORLD: HEROES FROM KING TUT TO BRUCE LEE (Beyond Words, 2012).
Shenaaz Nanji — Shenaaz, a superb storyteller, is a Canadian citizen who was already published in both Canada and the United States coming into the program. Shen grew up in Africa and has the most marvelous way of retelling the stories that animated her childhood. She also drew from another side of her family’s heritage in the marvelous INDIAN TALES (Barefoot Books, 2007). And her most recent novel, CHILD OF DANDELIONS (Front Street, 2008), is a powerful fictionalized account of a family’s experience in Uganda, when British Indians were forced out by the Idi Amin regime and even Indian citizens of Uganda became unsafe in their homeland. Can’t wait for the next Shen stories to come out!
Ann Parr — Ann is a teaching dynamo, bringing children and seniors together for writing workshops. She has published two biographies for young people, COACH TEX WINTER: TRIANGLE BASKETBALL (NDX Press, 2006), and GORDON PARKS: NO EXCUSES (Pelican, 2006), about the remarkable African-American photographer, filmmaker, and writer who didn’t let racism stop him from pursuing his great artistic gifts.
Leda Schubert — I met Leda on the Vermont state Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award Committee, where she wowed me with her terrific sense of humor and honest, clear-eyed critical faculties. She is the one who first told me about the VCFA program. We all graduated together, but Leda is the only Zoo member who has gone on to become faculty at Vermont College, where she helps nurture the careers of many budding and established writers. Leda has published a boatload of fine books since her VCFA days, including the award-winning BALLET OF THE ELEPHANTS (Roaring Brook, 2006), FEEDING THE SHEEP (FSG, 2010), READING TO PEANUT (Holiday House, 2011), and this year’s gorgeous Orbis Pictus winner, MONSIEUR MARCEAU: ACTOR WITHOUT WORDS (Roaring Brook/Flash Point, 2012). It must also here be said that Leda loves dogs, because somehow this must always be said about Leda.
Trina St. Jean —Trina was one of the funniest members of our class, and a delightful writer. Her publishing career was stalled a bit when she, like Bethany, started her family. Trina taught ESL while raising her children. Happily, she has continued to write, and recently made final polishes to a terrific MG novel that has just started making the rounds. Another Canadian citizen, she and Shenaaz represent the Zoo up north. Keep your eyes peeled for Trina’s name. We will be reading her books one day soon!
Desiree Tolbert — During her time at Vermont College, Desiree wrote fabulous stories about the refugee experience in the United States. She and her then boyfriend (now husband) worked closely with several refugee families, helping them settle in to their new lives here. Desiree’s ear and eye were sensitive and thoughtful. I have no doubt she would be published had she continued pursuing that avenue, but her social work proved to be the more compelling passion. I still hope some day we will see Desiree’s books on our shelves, but in the meantime, she inspires all of us Zoo members with the wonderful work she does with humor and grace.
Betsy Wernert — Betsy writes a cool, crazy, fun blog about children’s books called Bigfoot Reads. Bigfoot and his cryptid pals (Morzant the Alien and his lab assistant Mortimer, along with Penny C. Monster, Norman and Beverly the Half-Invisible Turtles, and Lenny, Oliver, and Violet, the Paranormal Puppies) review books, interview authors, and offer writing exercises to aspiring writers. Betsy has recently begun library school to become a children’s librarian. Plus, she is a very funny, inventive novelist and picture book writer. Can’t wait to have her books on the Flying Pig shelves one of these days. Woot!! Betsy also conducts the best family contest ever: a reading competition that involves two or three generations of family members vying for the most pages read during the year. The family members compare and recommend books to one another; it warms my heart when Betsy’s dad willingly picks up a middle-grade or young-adult novel simply on the basis of his daughter’s trustworthy recommendation.
Thanks for sharing this pride-fest with me. I really am so bowled over by everything this little group has done since graduating from the program. It was a life-changing experience, an incredible writing program that focused on craft instead of publication, and it was chock full of wisdom, laughter, giant cookies, and the occasional meltdown. One thing that holds true for class after class: people become lifelong friends and loyal writing compatriots.
A final note: I took one semester off during my time at Vermont College, which means that I was part of another talented class, as well. I may have to brag about them in another post down the road.

When Customers Need Comfort Books

Josie Leavitt - January 30, 2013

One of the great things about owning a bookstore in a small town is you get to know people well. Often you see them during their worst moments. This can be hard on a bookseller, but I feel like it’s our job to really help our customers through their hard times.
Yesterday, one of my favorite customers brought her grown daughter to the bookstore for the first time. Deb, hadn’t shopped here before because she’s only newly back to the area. Sadly, she’s back for aggressive cancer treatment. I was in the back office when I heard her ask for a pure escape read. I sensed, somehow, that she wasn’t as forthcoming about the kind of book she wanted because she was shopping with her mom. Several staffers offered great suggestions, and Deb passed on them. I popped out of the office and handed her Bared to You, a tamer and better written Fifty Shades of Grey.
She smiled at me and said, “You nailed it.” I felt good about that and asked her about her cancer and her treatment. The relief was palpable in being able to discuss her illness with someone who wasn’t scared for her or upset. We circled back around to books and I suggested next time she might like funny essays, perhaps something from David Sedaris. I also mentioned that she should let me know if the book wasn’t the right one. I don’t take someone not liking a recommended book personally. I just like to know so I can rethink for the next time.
When kids are sick it’s more difficult to find books right away. It hits me harder when I hear kids are sick and I so want to get the perfect book to make their illness go by a little a faster that I tend to overwhelm myself with titles. But I’ve found that the books that comforted me as a kid will make the younger generation feel just as good.
For young ones I always suggest a Richard Scarry book. There is something lovely about all the details in the books. What Do People Do All Day? was the book that I pored over as a kid, sick or not. Where was Lowly Worm? What was the hardhat-wearing pig doing on this page? I loved looking for these comforting characters. I also like wordless books for sick kids because they can get lost in the pictures and make their own story.
Middle readers love From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil Frankweiler. The thought of two siblings running amok in the Metropolitan Museum of Art tends to appeal to just about anyone, sick or not. The mystery is not too hard to follow and the book is just plain fun. The Harry Potter series is a comfort book for many children because they are so familiar with the characters and the setting. Sick kids, and adults, like books they don’t have to pay attention to when they’re not feeling well. Rereading is something I actually love to do when I’m under the weather.
The other great thing to recommend to anyone who isn’t feeling well, is audio books. It’s the next best thing to having someone in the family read aloud to you. And let’s face it, as nice as parents might be, they’re probably not as good at narrating a story, say as Jim Dale or Phillip Pullman.
So, what are some of your favorite comfort books?

And The Winners Are…

Josie Leavitt - January 29, 2013

Yesterday was the very exciting awards announcements for the ALA Youth Media Awards. It was also Special Friend’s Day at my nephew’s school. I stayed for the morning classes, and then left at recess, or as his class calls it: Snow Banana. I made it back to the store just in time to set up the livestream from the ALA.
I love the ALA for livestreaming the awards on the Internet. It makes my life so much easier to be able to have three windows up on the computer. One for the stream, one for Twitter (in case I missed something) and one for Ingram to place and hold orders for honorees and winners that I didn’t have. I should have set myself up in the back office, but I didn’t. I was up front basically doing my job poorly as I hesitated to answer the phone or get too involved with customer service. Thankfully, we weren’t busy and several customers wanted award updates.
My initial reaction to the awards is mixed. I have to admit that Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe somehow escaped my notice. Thankfully, Elizabeth had the foresight to order some for the store, sensing it might be a winner. The book garnered whoops and hollers with every award it won and that’s always fun to hear.
I was struck by a few things during the awards ceremony. I was really surprised that The Fault in our Stars won only for audio. I loved that John Green almost immediately tweeted after not getting a Printz award how thrilled he was Benjamin Alire Saenz had gotten an honor. I thought that was extremely classy and highlights the welcoming nature of children’s literature. I was surprised by the win for In Darkness. This book slipped through my radar and now of course it’s not available. But that’s the beauty of back-ordering things. It will come in, hopefully soon, and I can finally read it.
The other surprise was that there were no honors for the Pura Belpré Illustrator Award. The gasp from the audience clearly echoed my response. It always feels like an utter condemnation of the books that came out in the past year that the committee couldn’t even find one they liked enough to honor. This stood in stark contrast to the five Caldecott honorees. I loved all the honorees for the Caldecott and was not surprised by the win for This is Not My Hat, much. While I loved this book, I found it more a book that adults and older kids would love.
The Newbery award was the only one I called right in my earlier blog about the guessing the winners. I’m thrilled for Katherine Applegate and her win. I loved the book and have shared many laughs with her at Book Expo and the NEIBA Fall Conference.  I also picked Splendors and Glooms to get something and it did.
So, all in all an interesting award’s season. And as a Vermonter and lifelong fan of Katherine Paterson, her win of the Laura Ingalls Wilder for “books have made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children” seems oh so fitting.
So, what did you think about awards? Were you happy, sad or surprised by the winners, and the books that garnered nothing?

Beat the Cold by Celebrating It

Elizabeth Bluemle - January 25, 2013

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
      By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
      That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
      I cremated Sam McGee.
(from The Cremation of Sam McGee, by Robert W. Service)

Vermont has fallen well below the zero-degree mark for the past few days. Tonight, the wind (chill level down to -25) is whipping through the poor trees, which make ominous sudden cracking noises as they freeze. This kind of cold makes even warm, layered clothing feel tissue-thin, and getting into cold cars feels like entering the 9th circle of Dante’s Inferno. It’s the kind of night you can almost imagine cremating the corpse of a gold-rush miner pal to warm your hands on.

Talk of your cold! through the parka’s fold it stabbed like a driven nail.
If our eyes we’d close, then the lashes froze till sometimes we couldn’t see;
It wasn’t much fun, but the only one to whimper was Sam McGee.

Note: It doesn’t pay to be a whiner, folks. Gets people fired up to, um, fire you up.
At any rate, the universal Vermont preoccupation with the cold these days made me think of writers who have best been able to capture icy chill in their stories and poems, and I invited friends to contribute some of their favorites.
Lisa Doan sent this, from The Wolves of Willoughby Chase:
It was dusk – winter dusk. Snow lay white and shining over the pleated hills and icicles hung from the forest trees. Snow lay piled on the dark road across Willoughby Wold, but from dawn men had been clearing it with brooms and shovels. There were hundreds of them at work, wrapped in sacking because of the bitter cold, and keeping together in groups for fear of the wolves, grown reckless and savage from hunger.
Sandy Rouse contributed these lines from “The Snow Queen,” by Hans Christian Andersen:
The snow-flakes grew larger and larger, till at last they looked just like great white fowls. Suddenly they flew on one side; the large sledge stopped, and the person who drove rose up. It was a lady; her cloak and cap were of snow. She was tall and of slender figure, and of a dazzling whiteness. It was the Snow Queen.
Siobhan Henry-Hooker reminded me of these incredible lines from Dylan Thomas’s A Child’s Christmas in Wales:
All the Christmases roll down toward the two-tongued sea, like a cold and headlong moon bundling down the sky that was our street; and they stop at the rim of the ice-edged fish-freezing waves, and I plunge my hands in the snow and bring out whatever I can find.
and:
Our snow was not only shaken from white wash buckets down the sky, it came shawling out of the ground and swam and drifted out of the arms and hands and bodies of the trees; snow grew overnight on the roofs of the houses like a pure and grandfather moss, minutely -ivied the walls and settled on the postman, opening the gate, like a dumb, numb thunder-storm of white, torn Christmas cards.
Chris Tebbetts invoked C.S Lewis’s passage from The Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe:
There was a crisp, dry snow under his feet and more snow lying on the branches of the trees. Overhead there was a pale blue sky, the sort of sky one sees on a fine winter day in the morning. Straight ahead of him he saw between the tree trunks the sun, just rising, very red and clear. Everything was perfectly still, as if he were the only living creature in that country. There was not even a robin or a squirrel among the trees, and the wood stretched as far as he could see in every direction. He shivered.
Ariel Zeitlin Cooke shared another from that book:
…[Edmund] found himself stepping out from the shadow of some thick dark fir trees into an open place in the middle of a wood. There was crisp, dry snow under his feet and more snow lying on the branches of the trees. Overhead there was a pale blue sky, the sort of sky one sees on a fine winter day in the morning…Everything was perfectly still, as if he were the only living creature in that country.
Audrey Vernick sent lines from Jane Yolen’s Owl Moon:
Our feet crunched over the crisp snow and little gray footprints followed us.
Pa made a long shadow but mine was short and round.
I had to run after him every now and then to keep up, and my short round shadow bumped after me.
Just to show how keyed in we Vermonters are to all things ice and snow, Vermont author Rebecca Rupp shared a link to a blog post she wrote last November that gathers together all manner of wonderful winter books. This is an extraordinary resource!
I’ll give Lee Bennett Hopkins the last word, with his poem “Winter” from City I Love:
NEVER
EVER
quarrel
with
winter.
It
ALWAYS
wins.
There was a veritable flurry of entries sent in and not enough space to include all of them, so, Dear Readers, you are invited to try to out-freeze each other with your own favorite chilly passages from children’s literature and classics in the comments section below.

Story Hour Giggles

Josie Leavitt - January 24, 2013

Every Wednesday we have story hour at 11. I seldom work on Wednesday, so when I do I feel like a little kid who’s being read to. I marvel at the job JP does. She thoughtfully chooses her books several days before and is ready at 10:45 for the first kids to come in the door.
I don’t get much work done when JP has story hour. Yesterday was no exception. It was bitterly cold here and we only had three little girls. But JP read as if the store was full. All I heard were giggles. Peals of giggles from these sweet little ones as JP read. This reminds me that books can be a wonderful way to share happiness in a group. It seemed that when one little girl would start to giggle just a tiny bit, another would join in slowly and within moments all of them were practically convulsed with joy.
JP started off with Say What? and her reading was spot-on perfect. The girls loved the sounds of the book. Their favorite line seemed to be: When a duck says QUACK, does he really mean Snack? That just about had the kids hyperventilating, they were laughing so hard.
The second book was Tiger in the Snow! which is out of print. But if you have a chance to get it out from your library, do. The girls were loving it so much, JP almost read it twice. There was something funny about a tiger in the snow and getting all his friends to join him. On the coldest day of the year, this seemed like a great choice.
JP, whose sense of rhythm for story hour is impeccable, ended with the more gentle The Bear in the Book. The kids learned about hibernation as the boy in the story gets read to at night. What I loved about hearing this story read aloud was the total silence during the reading. The giggling girls were transfixed and hanging on every word.
When JP’s chosen books were read, she let each girl pick out a book to read and all of them wanted to hear Say What? again. And if that’s not high praise, I’m not sure what else is.

2012 Starred Reviews: The Complete Round-Up

Elizabeth Bluemle - January 17, 2013

Now that it’s January 2013, most of 2012’s starred reviews are finally in. With the ALA Youth Media Awards coming up next week (Monday, January 28, at 8:00 a.m.), it’s the perfect time to scan this list of last year’s standouts and ponder our own favorites (including, perhaps, some books that didn’t receive any starred reviews but still knocked our socks off).
So, I present to you the final, updated list of 2012’s starred reviews for children’s and YA books from the following sources: Booklist, The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, the Horn Book, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, School Library Journal, and VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates – their “perfect tens,” or 5Q 5P titles, get the nod here).
Last year’s titles received 1,496 starred reviews. Receiving a starred review is a special, joyful honor for a book and its creators. While everyone will understandably focus much interest on the books receiving multiple stars, and may lose steam before getting toward the bottom of the list, I encourage you to take a long look at the single-star books; those often are given to rare discoveries and are well worth exploring.
Publishers and authors: starred reviews are counted only when they have been officially published by the review magazines. This round-up covers reviews published through January 16, 2013. Publishers may alert me to any oversights at ebluemle AT publishersweekly.com; please include all starred review sources and dates for any books you’re referencing.
We hope this list will be a handy resource for booksellers, librarians, teachers, readers, and folks in the children’s book industry. The list was compiled and formatted by one lone little ol’ indie bookseller. It’s a labor of love and takes hours of research and data inputting and triple-checking. Basically, it’s a giant morass of details! I love doing it, but it is a ton of work. Therefore, I ask you: if you are using this as a purchasing tool, please consider thanking me by doing your ordering with an independent bookstore, either local or online (you can find one via Indiebound.org).
And now, without further ado — CONGRATULATIONS to all of you creators and crew for a fabulous year of books!

Bookstore as a Resource

Josie Leavitt - January 16, 2013

Yesterday I was reminded of all that a bookstore can do for its community, one person at a time. I’m always struck by how quickly conversations can turn personal, sometimes highly personal, in the bookstore. There is a comfort level customers have in talking to us (and I suspect, talking to any indie employee) and sharing their life with us.
Randy came in to pick up her 2013 datebook yesterday, and  we started talking about our hair. Okay, this is not a normal bookstore topic, but Randy and I both have very curly long hair. Often folks like us ask similarly haired folk “what they use.” I told her what mousse I use and she mentioned a hair place in NYC she loves. Somehow, the conversation veered toward my doing a stand up show this weekend for an organization that works with disabled kids.
Randy’s daughter has cerebral palsy and is blind. The show benefits the scholarship fund that lets disabled kids go to summer camp. Randy, who is still very new to the area, had no idea about the organization, but loved hearing about the possibility of her daughter being able to go to camp. She and her husband are coming to the show, hoping to network with local families. As she was leaving Randy said, “I’ve been here three times since I moved in the fall and I learn something every time.”
Trina, a woman who works in the same building, has been shopping with us for years. Her daughter’s birthday is Saturday and Trina has written a scavenger hunt for Mallory to find her presents. The hunt ends with us. Mallory is a voracious reader and will sometimes just bop down to the store while her mom is working and read. I love it when kids just feel like the bookstore is an extension of their living room. And I especially love that we are the culminating part of what looks to be a really fun scavenger hunt.
Both these women illustrate a few of the ways bookstores and customers can have some pretty special relationships.
