I read with horror the latest Amazon news. Jeff Bezos said on 60 Minutes that he is testing using drones to deliver packages. Drones! Some people who order from Amazon will receive their packages in under an hour. Wow. I have to admit, I went from horror to amusement pretty quickly. I found myself walking around my house folding laundry, doing chores, just chortling and muttering, “Drones.”
I can’t imagine what I would do if a drone delivered me a package, or I saw a drone in my neighborhood delivering a package. How odd would that be? An unmanned aircraft delivering packages seems like a colossal mis-use of technology. Only an ego as large as Jeff Bezos could think this up. This sort of delivery system begs for these things to be shot down by ornery folks who just need something to do and steal the package contents.
Sadly, it will just be one more thing indies have to explain: Sure, you can get your package 40 minutes after you order it, but Amazon still won’t sponsor your kid’s Little League. How odd will it be to have packages delivered this way? As Amazon continues to eschew the human touch in favor of automation, the indies will continue to value human interaction.
I like people and find there is a real benefit to actually interacting with them. The exchange of information is critical, for customers and us. I learn from my customers every day, not by reading some computer aggregate, but by talking to them. I learn what’s happening in their life that informs my book buying decisions, i.e., did someone just lose a pet? Maybe I should order Dog Heaven? Is there a spate of divorces happening in town (that always seems to be the way)? Maybe I need to beef up the life issues section. And of course, the information exchange about authors and beloved books just makes me a better bookseller.
While we might not deliver by drone anytime time soon (okay, never) we will continue to fly our Flying Pig high and proud as we continue to deliver the best personal service we can, just like all the indies. There is so much more to a good store than speed, and drones or not, I’m convinced all good indies will remain long after the drones have been grounded.
Author-Booksellers Share Their “Shop Indie” Saturday Stories
Elizabeth Bluemle - December 2, 2013
A few months ago, author Sherman Alexie wrote an open letter to fellow authors. His letter began,
“Hello, hello, you gorgeous book nerds,
Now is the time to be a superhero for independent bookstores. I want all of us (you and you and especially you) to spend an amazing day hand-selling books at your local independent bookstore on Small Business Saturday (that’s the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 30 this year, so you know it’s a huge weekend for everyone who, you know, wants to make a living).”
He called on fellow authors to get out and share their love of reading, and celebrate the importance of indies to their communities and to the continued success of authors themselves. In an NPR interview, he said, “My career happened because the booksellers at independent bookstores hand-sold my book.” This is true for so many literary careers; enthusiastic indie booksellers raved about a new title by an unknown author, spreading the word to their communities and to other booksellers, until the lapping waves become a tidal wave of public awareness.
Many authors responded to the call, and I threw out a call to them on Facebook to share some of their experiences working at indies this weekend. By all accounts, they had a wonderful time! We would love to hear from all of you authors who participated, so feel free to add yours in the comments section!
Karen Romano Young — I was at Byrd’s Books in Bethel, Connecticut, admiring some of the surprise successes: a little book called Twelve Kinds of Ice by Ellen Bryan Obed with beautiful pictures by Barbara McClintock, as well as Tibetan ‘singing bowls’ and the music and writing of Janet Ettele. Such a lovely store!
Jeanette Larson — I was pleased by the displays in The Book Spot and by the number of people who showed up. The owner said there was actually a line at opening! Traffic was pretty consistent throughout the morning. People seemed to appreciate having us there to give gift suggestions for gifts. I hand sold a couple of copies of A Wilder Rose by Susan Wittig Albert as well as books by a few of the other authors who were there. And a copy or two of my book…. ;-]
Jo Knowles — I hand-sold Gareth Hinds’ graphic novel The Odyssey to a young reader who then convinced her mom to let her start reading right away instead of waiting until Christmas.
Jeanie Wogaman — Talk to Erica Perl. The Obama family came in to shop while she was signing her books at Politics & Prose Bookstore. [Ed. note: I did! And Erica led me to her blog post about it, POTUS & Prose. It’s fun reading, and has pictures of the President!]
Anne Broyles — I loved thinking of the best questions to ask a customer looking for “a special book” for a particular child, and was glad I’ve read so many picture books (most requests were for younger kids). My favorite suggestion was to an uncle who rarely sees his 2-year-old nephew, but wanted a book they would enjoy reading together and the kid could look at on his own. Mr. Tiger Goes Wild was a big hit with the uncle, and hopefully, the nephew when he opens it on Christmas. (At Bestsellers Cafe in Medford, Mass.)
Wendell Minor — Florence and I spent two and a half happy hours “working” in our favorite Indie, The Hickory Stick Bookshop in Washington Depot, CT. Our friend Marilyn Singer was also there signing her latest book, Tallulah’s Nutcracker. We feel very lucky to have such a wonderful bookstore in our small New England town. Small Business Saturday was a very busy day at the Hickory Stick. It was great to meet and greet so many customers, and help them select books for children on their holiday shopping list.
I have to say that our Indie is the heart and soul of our community, and it was our joy and pleasure to be part of a special day!
Cynthia Lord — At DDG Booksellers in Farmington, Maine, I helped a reader find The Fault in Our Stars and had great conversations with all ages of readers with all different interests. One lady came to the counter to ask if we thought Shel Silverstein’s Falling Up would be a good choice for her to read to an elderly former first grade teacher who now has Alzheimer’s. She had liked Where the Sidewalk Ends, and we said, “Oh yes.” She bought it and it touches me to imagine them sharing the rhythm and joy of those poems together. It was a good reminder to me that wonderful children’s books are really for all of us. I gift-wrapped, too! And I had a funny moment when a mom said to her 3 year old, “OH! We love Hot Rod Hamster at our house, don’t we? Do you see this lady here? It’s her book!” The little girl looked shocked and said, “No. That’s MY book.” I think she was afraid I was going to come to her house and take her book away!
Leda Schubert — Bear Pond Books in Montpelier had a star-studded cast of eager booksellers: Tom Greene, M.T. Anderson, Linda Urban, Howard Norman, Howard Mosher, Sarah Stewart Taylor, me, and another author. Most of us were fairly incompetent, but Linda, formerly a professional bookseller, set an impossibly high standard. I was upstairs, but Senator Patrick Leahy came in downstairs to buy a NY Times. Fun was had by all.
Kristin O’Donnell Tubb — At Parnassus Books in Nashville, I gift-wrapped several books (and the customers were thankfully very forgiving of my skills!) My favorite was the family who purchased two copies of Jessica E. Young’s My Blue Is Happy, and the young girl had to read it one last time before I wrapped them up for her cousins.
Catherine Thimmesh — At the amazing Addendum in St. Paul, Minn., I was stumped by a young girl who wanted realistic fiction. I suggested 5 or 6 of my favorites — she had read them all! Finally, I thought of Rose Under Fire, and backtracked to Code Name Verity which was a hit and a sale! The funniest was a woman’s expression upon seeing Battle Bunny which I insisted was perfect for her 7-year-old boy who was a reluctant reader. I had to explain the whole concept and walk her through the book and finally she got the joke and decided it would be perfect. Most amazing were owners Marcus and Katherine who knew every title of every book and exactly where to find it. Great fun!
Kelly Barson — I was an honorary bookseller at Nicola’s Books in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with Sarah Perry (aka S.J. Lomas) and Shanda Trent. Later Philip and Erin Stead were there. I had several favorite moments. The first was when I asked a girl what she liked to read and she said books about girls today (not future or past). I showed her my book, a contemporary YA, 45 Pounds (More or Less). She read the back and put it back on the shelf with a shrug. I cracked up and then sold her a post-apocalyptic scary story (In the After by Demitria Lunetta), which she was excited about. When I asked another girl what she liked to read, she seemed distracted and not interested in answering. Finally, she said, “I thought there were going to be authors here today.” When I told her I was, she asked for my book, hugged it, and asked for a signature. I later learned that she’d just come from spending the night in the hospital. She was adorable. I also suggested other friends’ books to eager readers. The whole morning was a blast. I loved it! But it’s hard work, too. Real-life booksellers are my heroes!
***
Awww. We are mighty fond of you real-life authors, too, without whom our stores would just be big collections of blank pads of paper and our minds less nuanced, provoked, enlightened, enriched, and entertained. Thank you so much for sharing your passion with your communities this weekend!
Happy Hanukkah and Thanksgiving
Josie Leavitt - November 27, 2013
There is snow on the ground, and honestly, it’s starting to feel a lot like the holidays at the bookstore. This weekend of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving is a great way to kick off the season. Independent bookstores are doing what they can to stand out amid the big box retailers and online sales blitzes.
Most indies know we can’t compete against the huge markdowns of Black Friday, so we’re getting creative about how to drive business to our stores. I think one of the smart things we do, is remind people that personal service is often better than a steep discount. Don’t get me wrong, there are bargains aplenty at most bookstores, they’re just not the screaming sales folks have become accustomed to at larger stores. Many stores are having specials sales Friday, although we don’t really try to compete with what’s happening at the mall.
Saturday is our day. American Express’s promotion: Small Business Saturday is a huge day for us. Having the branding and marketing power of Amex behind the day helps make Saturday a great way to start the season. Their push on social media is hard to miss and that helps to just remind folks, even if they don’t have an American Express card, that shopping locally at a small business is a great idea.
And, Williard Williams of the Toadstool Bookshop in Peterborough, NH, has created a brilliant plan to counteract Cyber Monday. His idea is quite simple: Cider Monday, inviting customers to come in to a real store, talk to a real person, and have some cider and a cookie. Again, the push is to remind folks that you actually do get more real value for your dollar at an independent store.
I hope all of our readers have a happy and safe weekend!
ABBFE Children’s Art Auction
Josie Leavitt - November 25, 2013
Lovers of children’s book art, now is your chance to make someone’s holiday truly unique with one-of-a-kind art. The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression is having on-line auction that starts Tuesday at noon. The auction runs until December 2nd.
There are more than 70 pieces of art available for bidding. Some of the artists who have donated art include: Chris Raschka, Judy Schachner and Eric Carle, to name just a few. If you didn’t get to Book Expo this year, or were outbid, this is your chance to get some truly original art. I’ve always been delighted by the art I get at these auctions. There is something lovely about having Skippyjon Jones in my living room; he makes me happy every day.
The really lovely thing about this auction is that it benefits ABFFE’s Kids’ Right to Read Project, which supports freedom of reading. There really isn’t a better way to support your need for original children’s art and your desire to end reading censorship. This link gets you to ABFFE’s page where you can sign up for the auction at noon tomorrow.
Though I’m an avid fan of the ABFFE-sponsored auction at Book Expo, this online auction is all the more fun without having to camp out next to the one piece you’re willing to fight for. It allows you to bid from the comfort of your home, in your jammies if you’re so inclined, secure in the knowledge that you’re about to make someone’s holiday truly special.
“I Happy”
Josie Leavitt - November 22, 2013
Yesterday was the kind of day that could have gone over to the dark side. The computers utterly locked up, the phone was ringing off the hook, and there was so much to be done that my getting in at 8:30 made an imperceptible dent in the to-do list.
Then something happened. These kids started streaming in. All of them under five, all with their moms and all just cute as buttons. They were chatty, inquisitive and clearly loved the store. They played with toys and put them back, mostly in the right areas. They didn’t just look at books; they exclaimed over them. One little boy was thrilled that he finally the superhero sticker book that had just been relocated two days ago, he gave out a resounding, “Yes!” when his mom asked if that was the book.
But what brought me back to the important things was the one little girl who was contentedly walking around with her mom and apropos of nothing said, “I happy.”Anything could have made her happy, but I’m going to assume it was the bookstore that caused her spontaneous joyous statement.
So, the next time I’m drowning in work, I’m going to remember what this little moppet said: I happy and hope it helps gives me some much needed retail perspective.
Stocking Stuffers
Josie Leavitt - November 21, 2013
Every so often we are fortunate to have a blog post written by our friend Kenny Brechner of DDG Books in Farmington, ME. Today’s post finds Kenny and the goddess, Athena, chatting about the very timely topic of stocking stuffers. This post is as funny as it is informative.
At DDG, our quest to provide the best Stocking Stuffers of all time is a serious affair. Measuring the fun and pleasure afforded by games and trinkets is no laughing matter. This year, for our annual Stuffing Stuffer of the Year Awards, due to the intensity of the competition among the occupants of our fun laden displays, we felt the need to bring in an outside expert to do the judging.
Many of you may know Athena as the Goddess of Wisdom, yet she is also the Goddess of reason, intellect, strategy, handicrafts, and as it turns out, bookstore holiday sidelines
Kenny: Thank you so much for taking the time to judge this year’s sidelines.
Athena: It’s my pleasure.
Kenny: I had no idea that you were the Goddess of toys and games, but it does stand to reason.
Athena: Very humorous. But yes, Kenny, a great toy or game is rooted in strategy, intellect and craft. That very froth of pleasure you mortals call fun is but its yield.
Kenny: Were there any terrific games from ancient days that have been lost?
Athena: Oh yes. My protege Odysseus, for example, created a game of strategy to while away time at sea. He delighted much in challenging me at it.
Kenny: Really! Did he ever best you?
Athena: Only once. He handled it well, and I too showed restraint. Beyond turning one of his oarsmen into a seabird I let the result stand.
Kenny: You are a model for us all to be sure. All right then we have four categories this year, Most Shockingly Good Value, Most Fun, Best Game of Chance, and Most Successful Re-Imagined Classic. Where would you like to start?
Athena: Well for Most Fun I have selected the Phlat Ball Jr. As a deity I am drawn to metamorphosis and transformation and this amazing object is a disk which, when thrown, transforms to a ball. Truly it is a marvel. I also gave serious consideration to the Flying Sock Monkeys. They are fun to shoot through the air and make a satisfying wailing noise when they land.
Kenny: Very true. And after all few things have more pronounced literary connotations that flying monkeys. And what have you selected for Most Shockingly Good Value?
Athena: That was easy. The Mini Wooden Catch Ball is only $1.99, made of wood, and endlessly entertaining to play with. Here, try one out.
Kenny: This is fun! Hmmn. I did it!
Athena: Well captured. Now see how many you can do in a row. All right then, moving on to Best Re-Imagined Classic, this was a particularly tough one as you have some terrific items, such as Magnetic Sculpture, and Tangle Jr. Still, I have to declare The Robot X-7 as the winner. This adaptation of a Jacob’s Ladder into robot form is just brilliant.
Kenny: Totally agree! Have you tried to make it stand on one leg?
Athena: Interesting. I see what you mean. And finally we come to my favorite area, games of strategy. You have some outstanding ones, I really love 20 Express, for example, but one game you have truly embodies an ancient principle of elegance. The most deeply strategic games have the simplest rules, consider Go, for example, which was created by my Chinese colleagues the Baxian. Kyro 5 is such a game. It takes but a moment to learn but is highly strategic and most enjoyable to play. Would you like to try a round with me?
Kenny: I’d love to.
Athena: I notice that your staff just ran out of the store in terror.
Kenny: I take that as a compliment.
Athena: Ha! Let us see!
Men Showing Off the Store
Josie Leavitt - November 19, 2013
There’s been a new trend this week: men are shopping more at the bookstore. They’re not coming in for holiday books, it’s too soon for that, they’re doing something better: they’re showing off the store to their friends.
I always take it as a compliment when a customer brings a friend to the store. When people take that kind of ownership in my store it makes me feel proud that we’ve done something right. Usually, women are the ones who take their visiting friends and family to the store and give them a guided tour. But the last few days I’ve seen at least two men bringing friends with them to show off the bookstore.
It’s always fun to see someone else’s tour of the store. What they focus on tells me a lot about what parts of the store they enjoy. In both cases the men giving the tour were older, probably in their 70s, and they were proud. One man spent much of the visit in the Vermont section, or the “regional” section as he referred to it with his friend. They spent much time talking about the wonderful books of Howard Frank Mosher and Archer Mayor. Then they walked down the adult aisle talking about history books. With a casual wave of his hand the man said, “That section is where Judy gets books for the grandkids.”
When someone cares enough about your store to want to share with either a visiting friend or friend who’s new to the area, good things happen. The tacit implication is we’ve passed muster. We are a store worth sharing, not a store you drive by with a friend and say, “Don’t go there, their selection is horrible.” I always listen to what my friends say about their local bookstore. Hearing other people talk your store in positive terms just makes me proud.
Both of the tour guides triumphantly told their friends one thing that was absolutely adorable: “This is where I got your birthday book.” And I swear they each stood up a little taller when they said that.
Once-a-Year Shoppers
Josie Leavitt - November 18, 2013
It’s starting to be that time of the year again, when the once-a-year shoppers start to come back to the bookstore. I’m not sure, exactly, who these folks are, but I’m sure glad they shop with us for their holiday books. Every year I marvel at how early people get their shopping done. Not just some of it, but all of it. I haven’t even worn a winter coat yet and there are people who’ve just finished all their shopping. And they finished it at the bookstore.
I used to wonder where people got their books the rest of the year, and then yesterday I had an epiphany: I don’t care. These are folks who probably go to the library and that’s totally fine. What I care about is the children in their lives who only get gifts at holiday time. My job is blow them away with my book selection so they know they can come in the store and in however much time they have to shop, they will leave with the perfect books.
There is an inherent challenge with these annual shoppers. The risk of repeating a book for someone looms large. And there’s nothing worse than getting the same book two years in a row. It sends the message to the giftee that you’re not really paying attention to them. But I can’t remember what I read last week, I certainly can’t remember what book I gavemy niece last Hanukkah, so I don’t expect customers to. This is especially challenging with the three to five-year olds who like anti-princess books, as was the case yesterday. This is why we have a book club.
We don’t use our frequent buyers club to harvest emails or sell our list. We use it to help customers not repeat books. This lovely grandmother with fraternal twin grandkids came in and got very comfortable in the picture section. We selected books about strong girl characters for her to look at and then she pared down from 20 books to 10. Then she just kept going, asking us what books we loved. Her stack grew large and we double checked a few books in her customer file to make sure they weren’t duplicates. They weren’t.
The lovely grandma left the store with a tote bag overflowing with stunning and appropriate kid-friendly picture books. I’ve already started thinking about next year for her when the twins start reading.
Please, Will Somebody Re-Design These Covers?
Elizabeth Bluemle - November 15, 2013
There are some fabulous books we have a hard time selling because their covers are either dated or just don’t appeal to customers.
One of my favorite books as a child was a delightful novel about a shy and fearful little girl, Betsy, who has to leave her loving but extremely overprotective aunts (one of them takes ill and must recover sans child) to stay with the dreaded, unknown Putney relatives on a Vermont farm. The plain-spoken, hard-working, wholesome aunt, uncle, and fun cousins Betsy meets help her blossom into an adventurous and playful kid. Understood Betsy has the timeless charm of a slightly younger Anne of Green Gables. Kids still love this book! And we would love a cover that would help us sell it to them by the boatload.
We’ve sold 141 copies of Understood Betsy over the years – in five different editions from various publishers -and could have sold so many more if a paperback with a great cover existed. Henry Holt did a lovely hardcover version (image at left), and we sold 45 of that $18.95 edition before it went OP. Imagine how many we could have sold in paperback with that cover. One of the versions of Understood Betsy that’s been around longest is a perfectly serviceable paperback from Hardscrabble Books (cover image above right). Honestly, though, the only reason we’ve been able to sell 73 copies of this one is that we’re handselling it not to kids but to their parents, who are more willing to overlook a less-than-stellar cover. The Hardscrabble cover isn’t terrible; it’s just a little fussy. Kids don’t get a true sense of the story from that cover, and turn away from the book.
Another classic I’d love to see with new cover art is E. Nesbit’s The Enchanted Castle. This was also a childhood favorite of mine. I read it several times, continuing to relive the adventures of children who discover a tunnel in a hedge and find a mysterious castle — with a sleeping princess their own age! — on the other side. There were images that delighted (velvet-lined drawers or trays full of sparkling jewelry) and encounters that haunted wonderfully (marble statues come to life by moonlight). All in all, it was a satisfying magical romp in the vein of the Edward Eager books (Eager was inspired by Nesbit), and I would love to hand it to children.
The problem is, this is the cover I’ve had to work with since opening the bookstore in 1996:
Show me an eight-, nine-, or ten-year-old excited by remote orange castles. (Don’t hate, Puffin; you do a bang-up amazing job with so many covers! This one just isn’t my cup of tea.) I just can’t sell this cover, except to the rare grownup who comes in specifically for the story and will accept any edition available.
At the NEIBA trade show, I did see a cover from Wordsworth Classics that at least looked younger and brighter:
I do like this cover, but wish it had some people on it, or some action hinted at. Because this book is now in the public domain, there are several versions out there from various publishers, but all of the covers show only a bare castle. There’s no STORY in those covers, and most of the images don’t invite one to explore within. Where are the children? Where is the sense of adventure and fun, sparkle and twilight and moonlight spookiness? The story is so full of intriguing magical events and items that a great cover shouldn’t be hard to design.
Those are two of my top re-design wishes. Booksellers, teachers, and librarians, what books do you love but find to be a hard “handsell” to children because of their covers?
The Stars So Far, Updated 11.14.2013
Elizabeth Bluemle - November 14, 2013
Are you running Mock Caldecott, Newbery, Printz, Sibert, or Coretta Scott King award discussions? This round-up of the year’s starred reviews for juvenile literature from Booklist, The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, The Horn Book, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and School Library Journal should help ensure that you aren’t overlooking something outstanding.
So far this year, 807 books have received 1307 stars. The publications starring each title are noted at the end of the citations.
Please remember: starred reviews are counted only when they have been officially published by the review magazines. Often authors and publicists send me emails about books they know will be starred in upcoming issues; please only send me corrections if the review date has passed and the magazine or web review has already appeared to the public. Publishers, please alert me to any oversights at ebluemle at publishersweekly.com, including the review sources and dates for the starred reviews. Thanks! Please do NOT send stars that have not yet been officially published yet, or VOYA stars. (I will post a separate list of VOYA “perfect ten” scores for 2013 in December.) I am having a little trouble with the SLJ search functionality, so please check your SLJ stars especially carefully.
This is an insanely detail-laden process, and as careful as I try to be, there may be oversights here and there. If you want the cleanest version of this list, check back a week or two after each update, when I’ll have been alerted to anything that needs fixing.
Finally, if you are purchasing books inspired by this list, please strongly consider using an independent bookstore. You can find online indies through www.indiebound.org. An independent bookseller (me) compiled this list on behalf of everyone — booksellers, librarians, teachers, parents (and grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins) who lives, loves, and works hard in the service of books and children. Thank you!
