Here is the latest round-up of books receiving starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, the Horn Book, School Library Journal, Kirkus, Booklist, The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, and VOYA (since VOYA doesn’t star reviews, only books that receive a 5Q 5P rating make the starred review list here). Starred reviews are counted only when they have been officially published by the review magazines, so if your book has, say, a July starred review, never fear; it will be included in a future update. Publishers, please alert me to any oversights or errors. This is a ridiculously painstaking process, and I’m sure there are bobbles here and there.
Receiving a starred review is a rare and wonderful honor for a book and its creators, so we hope this list will be a handy resource for buyers of all stripes. The list was compiled from all the review sources by an indie bookseller; please consider ordering from your favorite indie instead of a chain or online megastore.
Happy reading!

Sadly, you missed The Last Best Days Of Summer (Foster/FSG) with two stars, one from PW and one from Booklist.
Hi, Valerie. Last Best Days is and has been on the list. Check the two-stars section again.
COUNTDOWN actually has four starred reviews: Kirkus, PW, Horn Book, and Booklist!
You’re right, Nancy. Thanks for the catch. When I get home to my Excel spreadsheet, I’ll have to figure out why I missed one of the stars and make sure I didn’t miss others from that magazine issue and date.
I don’t understand what this list means. Are the books with 6 or 5 stars better than the books with 1 star? Or are they just books with more reviews? I’m confused by what the stars represent here.
ditto JJ’s question.
JJ, more stars mean that the book had a higher number of stellar (pun intended) reviews.
Since each star represents a review from a different source, more stars mean that more reviewers/sources, possibly with quite different perspectives, thought the book was unusually special. Thus, possibly (though not certainly) more stars equate to wider acclaim, a stronger possibility that the book might win a major award. More stars might also mean higher sales and library circulations, though that’s by no means the case.
A book with one or two stars may have been reviewed by fewer sources, or may not have been considered extraordinary by some of the sources that did review it. The picture book I love best so far this year, A BEACH TAIL, has “only” two stars, at least right now, but it’s still a wonderful book which I’m handing to folks whenever I have the chance.
To me, the list is a useful reference for things I’d like to at least try to track down, to see whether I agree with the reviewers or not.
Thanks for all the work you put into this, Elizabeth. YOU ROCK!!!!

Thanks so much for adding my book!
You’re welcome, Valerie. But it was there all along!
Sorry, Elizabeth! Blame old age or old eyesight. . .
Thank you for doing this Elizabeth. We love putting these books on display at the library because of course, parents and kids want to be checking out the best books. With a sea of books from which to choose, putting these stars front and center is much appreciated by those dashing in to look for good books.
I actually have 6 stars for Freedman’s War to End all Wars. I haven’t plugged into that VOYA source yet, which must be where the 6th star is for Cosmic?
Sorry just saw the date of the post. The last two stars for WTEAW came in July.
A useful site if one only looks at popularity. I was hoping that there would be a slight synopsis, or age qualification. I don’t care about the publisher but I’m interested in grade level.
