Starred Reviews So Far, 2010

Elizabeth Bluemle - March 16, 2010

Here’s this year’s first installment of the 2010 children’s books that have received starred reviews from (in alphabetical order) Booklist, The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, The Horn BookKirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and School Library Journal.
The list below covers  Booklist through 3/15/2010, the Bulletin through 3/2010, Horn Book through March-April 2010, Kirkus through 3/15/10, PW through 3/15/10, and SLJ through March 2010. I’ll update quarterly.
EDITED TO ADD:  Okay, since you asked for it — I created a LibraryThing collection of these books, with book covers, genre and general age range. The 2010 Starred Review Library is divided into collections (1 Star, 2 Stars, etc.) and can be sorted in a variety of ways including by “tags” (e.g., MG, YA, Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, etc.).
I’m happy to see books from small presses recognized here as well as those from larger houses. In June and December, I’ll add a publisher tally to the update, as well as a count by genre if I get really ambitious.
It’s helpful to us busy booksellers, librarians, and teachers, to be able to scan a list of books have received stars. However, it would be a mistake to seek out only starred books. As usual, I want to add that hundreds, if not thousands, of wonderful books are published every year that don’t receive starred reviews but are wonderful, child-appealing, beautifully written books. Reading as many books as possible yourself, as well as a wide variety of review sources, will always uncover hidden gems that inform and delight.
This list was happily (and painstakingly) collected by an independent bookseller. If you are using it as a purchasing guide, please consider supporting your local independent bookstore, or an online indie (find a store on IndieBound.org). Thanks!
And, if you find this project valuable, please make a brief comment below. I’d like a sense of how many people are actually using this list, to know that collecting the data and making the citations consistent are worth the sort of ridiculous hours I spend doing it. I just want comments like, “Yep, use it!” not, “Thank you, goddess of lists, for using your OCD tendencies in a productive manner.” I’m fishing for users, not compliments, here. But if you like my hair today, please feel free to compliment that.  : )

Speaking from a public library — I used last year’s list, both for ordering and as a double-check on my personal to-be-read list and awards predictions. I’m thrilled to see the sequel in 2010!

Thanks, Valerie. Do you have the Booklist review date? If the review hasn’t officially come out yet, that may be why it’s missing. Also, I tried to catch all the 2010 titles that received stars in 2009, but may have missed some. Please let me know! (Love your books, by the way! Tender especially has stuck with me for years.)
Everyone, this is a good time to say that it’s best to wait a day or two before printing out the list, in case I need to make any corrections.

This list is amazing! I read reviews and set up book examination meetings for 450 schools in Northeast Ohio who make up the Lake Erie Educational Media Purchasing Consortium This is the kind of list I’ve been hoping to find. Thanks so much!

I thank you for your time and effort. I relied on last year’s list(s) many times during a work week as a salesperson at an independent bookstore. Keep up the good work, please.

thank you! this is a very neat list. Only addition would be a note that could distinguish fiction from nonfiction — but in general, this is very helpful. Thanks!

This is really nice and I’ll be referencing for awhile. Wouldn’t it be great if CBC or some other independent group would maintain the list, with links to the titles for covers, pub dates and descriptions, and keep it updated (already some of these books have more stars). But many thanks for this tremendous compilation!

I wish I had time to add all of the genres and intended age ranges to these titles, but I just can’t do it and run my business and try to write now and then. : ) So — I’m going to try an experiment. Here is the link to the list of titles. Please don’t add anything except age range and genre information, and I’ll add that to the main list for the next update. Because the comments field does not allow html links, I’ve added spaces to the address before the colon. You’ll need to remove those for the link to work. Thanks in advance to everyone who helps!

Okay, since you asked for it — I created a LibraryThing collection of these books, with book covers, genre and general age range. The 2010 Starred Review Library is divided into collections (1 Star, 2 Stars, etc.) and can be sorted in a variety of ways including by “tags” (e.g., MG, YA, Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, etc.). Go to LibraryThing.com and search for the username 2010StarredReviews, or scroll up in this post to find the link in the third paragraph.

I am a new Children’s Librarian, fresh out of Library School, and I refer to your list all the time! I use it to keep up to date on what is new

Hi, Stephen. You might want to let namelos know that the information at Ingram is incorrect (and there is no cover image there, either). Baker & Taylor has no information for the book. I’ve made the addition to the list, and it should appear shortly. Then I’ll delete all these comments about the book and listing to clear out our ‘private’ conversation. Cheers, Elizabeth

SUPER-DUPER USEFUL! use it for my own kids, to make suggestions for my children’s school library (which serves two schools), and to keep track of potentially jewish-themed titles i could write about for Tablet magazine. thank you so much for doing this!

I’m a bit late here, but I’ve been using this (and your previous lists) for library ordering purposes. It’s fantastic, and thank you for doing this!
