Some stories are my own, others have been collected from other BookPeople colleagues, but they all happened in our store (well, except for the extra credit square).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/images.booksense.com\/images\/055\/854\/9781770854055.jpg\" width=\"144\" height=\"194\" \/>The most obvious result of my informal survey was that it\u2019s not just Cynthia\u2019s store. The bathroom is really where it\u2019s at.<br \/>\n<strong><u>The Once Upon a Potty Routine:<br \/>\n<\/u><\/strong>Has anyone seen the bathroom?\u00a0Where, oh where&#8217;s\u00a0the bathroom? You must have a bathroom. May I show you to the bathroom? Why, of course we have a bathroom. You have to have a bathroom! Do you have a bathroom?<br \/>\nWhy, yes, we do!<!--more--><br \/>\n<strong><u>Overheard in the stacks:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nIn\u00a0the adult classics\u00a0section: <em>Wait, so who translated Shakespeare?<\/em><br \/>\nBy the toy baskets on the stairs: <em>\u201cMommy, I want THIS! What is it?\u201d<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-DN708WFdBns\/TqdL4a794uI\/AAAAAAAAA_o\/L4LqEQp-iQM\/s1600\/stanley+book.jpg\" width=\"214\" height=\"214\" \/><\/em><br \/>\nMom: <em>Oh look! There\u2019s a biography about Beatrix Potter.\u00a0<\/em>Daughter: <em>Who\u2019s that?\u00a0<\/em>Mom: <em>She\u2019s the one who wrote all those Beatrix Potter books. <\/em>Daughter: <em>Oh yeah, her!<\/em><br \/>\nFrom the storytime amphitheater as I was shelving: <em>Honey, don\u2019t stomp on the books. This isn\u2019t the LIBRARY! <\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<strong><u>Not the book they were looking for: <\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nAs I was working in the\u00a0teen section, right before <em>Fifty Shades of Gray<\/em> was really on my bookselling radar:<br \/>\nCustomer: I saw on your website you have <em>Shades of Gray<\/em>. Me: <em>Oh yes, that\u2019s a great book (I hand them <\/em>Between Shades of Gray<em> by Ruta Sepetys)<\/em>. Customer (several minutes later, sheepishly): Ummm\u2026 Are you sure this is the right one?<br \/>\n<strong><u><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/image1.masterfile.com\/getImage\/ODQ2LTA1NjQ4NDk4ZW4uMDAwMDAwMDA=AEBW02\/846-05648498en_Masterfile.jpg\" width=\"267\" height=\"348\" \/>Most abrupt phone call:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\n(Over the phone, child\u2019s voice):<br \/>\nDo you carry joke books?<br \/>\n<em>Yes, we do. Are you looking for a specific one? <\/em><br \/>\nBUTT! (hangs up)<br \/>\n<strong><u>Because it never hurts to ask:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nDo you have any signed books by Shel Silverstein? <em>No, but wouldn&#8217;t that be nice!<\/em><br \/>\nSo I\u2019m looking for a book. I can\u2019t remember anything about the title or cover or theme, but it\u2019s about 1\u201d thick, 6.5\u201d wide, and 9\u201d tall. Can you find it for me? <em>Hmmmm&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n(Over the phone): \u201cMa\u2019am, what day of the week was it on [insert random date from decades ago]?\u201d <em>Well, I\u2019m not really sure, but I\u2019m happy to Google it for you! <\/em><br \/>\n\u201cIf you need a place to publish your third book, I\u2019d happily publish it for you.\u201d \u2014<em>Spoken by a 10-year-old entrepreneur to an author at our summer writing workshops. He proceeded to promote his brand new publishing website and gave the author what she said was one of the most professional pitches of her career.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong><u>Most frequently garbled queries:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nDo you have any Dr. Zeus?<br \/>\nDo you have that book, <em>How to Kill a Mockingbird? <\/em><br \/>\n<strong><u>Extra Credit from the Archives:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\nAnd finally, this one comes from children\u2019s bookseller Merrilee Wilkerson, who just celebrated her 24th year at BookPeople. Before that she worked at Waldenbooks. So she pulled a gem from the archives for\u00a0resolving any stubborn\u00a0bingo battles:<br \/>\nDo you have <em>Clan of the Care Bears<\/em>? (Referring to <em>Clan of the Cave Bear<\/em>)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.giphy.com\/media\/IJTCcELAbVgHK\/giphy.webp\" width=\"358\" height=\"215\" \/><br \/>\nSo how did you do?
