And right now we have a trio of creative crafters on our team whose inspired (and hilarious) designs are adding oodles of whimsy to our store&#8217;s energy. And they just keep trying to top themselves in what&#8217;s becoming an epic craft versus craft competitive showdown.<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_21655\" style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DrewDaywalt-2-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21655\" class=\"wp-image-21655 \" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DrewDaywalt-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"414\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Staci and Eugenia stand off against Drew Daywalt.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>ROUND ONE: <\/strong>When we heard we were going to host Drew Daywalt, we knew we had to bring <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/stacicscissors-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21656 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/stacicscissors-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a>some out-of-the box exuberant fun, so booksellers Staci, Merrilee, and Griffin got to work bringing to life a legendary battle for the ages. Of course we had to leave the standees up instore to let kids take their turn becoming the heroes of <em>The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors. <\/em>Sadly, Paper was too large to leave out permanently, and Rock&#8217;s three-dimensional design did not lead to success in the longevity competition. <strong>EARLY LEADER: SCISSORS!<\/strong><br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/C_BPWFtVoAEBTwZ.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"270\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lisa Brown and Goldfish Ghost<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<strong>ROUND TWO: <\/strong>Next up? An evening with Daniel Handler and Lisa Brown. Our trio tackled the endearingly macabre charms of <em>The Goldfish Ghost<\/em> using a yoga ball to\u00a0shape the perfect vessel for a recently deceased fish. And yes, a papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 dead goldfish turns out to be quite a conversation starter. Plus, using twinkle lights to simulate decorative rocks is pretty irresistible. <strong>TOUGH CONTENDER: GOLDFISH GHOST!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ROUND THREE: <\/strong>Today they truly outdid themselves with an installation celebrating the <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/cropped1-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21664 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/cropped1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a>downtown Zilker Theater Production&#8217;s upcoming presentation of <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em>, which we happen to be sponsoring for a night. It\u2019s over six feet tall from top to bottom, bedazzled in fringe and sparkles and flags and more. Inspiring a member of our receiving department to opine that he could not shrink himself to fit inside, this glittering green wonder is hard to beat.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>KNOCKOUT VICTORY: EMERALD CITY!<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/city-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-21670 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/city-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"643\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>In the end, the Emerald City may have won the day, but really I&#8217;m just happy to work with creative people who are in bookselling for the fun of it all.
