Times Book Award, the winner of which will be announced on April 20, the evening before the kick-off of the <a href=\"http:\/\/events.latimes.com\/festivalofbooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Times Festival of Books<\/a>, a huge (and by all accounts fantastic) two-day annual event.<br \/>\nScholastic has three books in the final five: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/libbabray.com\/beauty-queens.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Beauty Queens<\/em> <span style=\"color: #333399;\">by Libba Bray<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span>, <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0nAdhS9G9b0&amp;feature=plcp&amp;context=C3e4dff4UDOEgsToPDskIaoKf6MVm9bLWR8xNeAb5d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Big Crunch<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petehautman.com\/young-adult-books.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pete Hautman<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/maggiestiefvater.com\/the-scorpio-races\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Scorpio Races<\/span><\/em> by Maggie Stiefvater<\/a> (which also received a Printz Honor and an Odyssey Audiobook Honor from the ALA in January). Candlewick has two finalists: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.candlewick.com\/cat.asp?browse=Title&amp;mode=book&amp;isbn=076365227X&amp;pix=n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Life: An Exploded Diagram<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/span> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walker.co.uk\/contributors\/Mal-Peet-2722.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mal Peet<\/a>, and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/candlewick.com\/cat.asp?browse=Title&amp;mode=book&amp;isbn=0763655597&amp;pix=n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Monster Calls: Inspired by an Idea from Siobhan Dowd<\/span><\/a><\/span> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrickness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patrick Ness<\/a> (which also just won the U.K.&#8217;s child-chosen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redhousechildrensbookaward.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red House Children&#8217;s Book award<\/a>).<br \/>\nI hope a newspaper as large as the <em>L.A. Times<\/em> will decide to recognize excellence in literature for readers younger than a YA audience, as well, since they are not only the nation&#8217;s most enthusiastic readers, but also the paper&#8217;s future readers.
