{"id":6505,"date":"2011-11-11T06:00:55","date_gmt":"2011-11-11T11:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=6505"},"modified":"2011-11-11T06:00:55","modified_gmt":"2011-11-11T11:00:55","slug":"whos-winning-awards-in-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=6505","title":{"rendered":"Who&#8217;s Winning Awards in January?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a gloomy day yesterday and I consoled myself by looking at picture books, which always leads me to wondering who&#8217;s going to win<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/wonderstuck-2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6506\" style=\"border-width: 1px;border-color: black;border-style: solid;margin: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/wonderstuck-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"148\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a> the Caldecott this year.<em><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/0061730742-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6512\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;margin: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/0061730742-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">I think a lot of folks are saying <em>Wonderstruck <\/em>will repeat the success of <em>The Inventio<\/em><em><\/em><em>n of Hugo Cabret, <\/em>and as much as I love this book, I don&#8217;t think so. \u00a0I just think <em>Hugo <\/em>broke the ground on this style of book and <em>Wonderstruck<\/em>&#8216;s format is too simi<em><\/em>lar.<em><\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no surprise just how much I love<em> Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans<\/em> by Kadir Nelson, but will it win? There&#8217;s a lot of text and that might make it not win the Caldecott, but I have a sneaking feeling it&#8217;s going to win some bling. Several other non-fiction books also seem likely to win.<br \/>\nA book that I adore is <em>Me&#8230;Jane<\/em> by Patrick McDonnell. A <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/jane-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6510 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 5px;border: 1px solid black\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/jane-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a>seemingly simple book, this book really captures the mind of a young Jane Goodall in a way that will appeal to most<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/butterly2-2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6518\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;margin: 5px\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/butterly2-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"171\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a> children.\u00a0 The book <em>A Butterfly Is Patient<\/em> by Dianna Hutts Aston is chock full of info about butterflies and is absolutely stunning.<br \/>\n<em>Will You Be My Friend?<\/em> by Peter Brown strikes all the right notes for child enjoyment, and the art is wonderful and accessible.<br \/>\nSo, what are you guessing will win come January?<br \/>\nPlease comment below and when it&#8217;s time for the announcements, I&#8217;ll post who got the most correct titles and they&#8217;ll win the annual PW ShelfTalker Bow of Gratitude.
