{"id":3656,"date":"2010-12-17T06:00:46","date_gmt":"2010-12-17T11:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=3656"},"modified":"2010-12-17T06:00:46","modified_gmt":"2010-12-17T11:00:46","slug":"mock-caldecotts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=3656","title":{"rendered":"Mock Caldecotts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I know all of us are crazy busy during the last week before Christmas, but that&#8217;s no reason to skip having a Mock Caldecott and Newbery.<br \/>\nThis year&#8217;s Caldecott field is rich with many great books, some from previous winners, newbies to the Caldecott arena and a book or two that aren&#8217;t eligible because the illustrators don&#8217;t live in the USA.<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_3669\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/0618756639-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3669\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3669\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/0618756639-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I think Art and Max is a Medal contender. <\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_3658\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/knuffle-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3658\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3658  \" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/knuffle-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This could be another Honor for Willems. <\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I think this could be the year Elisha Cooper finds himself with some Caldecott bling for <em>Farm. <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/farm1-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3671\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/farm1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>The Quiet Book<\/em> is one the best books of the year, but I&#8217;m pretty sure it&#8217;s not eligible because the illustrator, Renata Liwska, lives in Canada. <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/quiet-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3661\" style=\"margin: 7px;\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/quiet-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a> The rules for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/mgrps\/divs\/alsc\/awardsgrants\/bookmedia\/caldecottmedal\/caldecottterms\/caldecottterms.cfm\">Caldecott eligibility<\/a> are pretty clear, but I think it might be limiting to say that an illustrator whose American book cannot win the award if they&#8217;re not a resident of the USA. But is it fair that a book that is beloved by children, booksellers and parents not be eligible if the illustrator happens to live in Canada or France?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/chicken-thief1-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3672\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/chicken-thief1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>I feel the same way about <em>The Chicken Thief, <\/em>one of the most charming books of the year, but it can&#8217;t win because the illustrator lives in France.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Okay, I&#8217;m done lamenting. Here are a few more contenders:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8211; <em>Shark Vs. Train <\/em>illustrated by Tom Lichtenfeld, written by Chris Barton<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8211; <em>Country Road ABC<\/em> by Arthur Geisert<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8211;<em> Children Make Terrible Pets<\/em> by Peter Brown<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8211; <em>Snook Alone <\/em>illustrated by Timothy Basil Ering, written by Marilyn Nelson<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What do you think is in contention for the Caldecott?
