It seems selfish and shortsighted to complain, of course, for the long cold stretch of January will make us wish for a calendar this full, or at least make me forget about aching feet and a constant sense that I have forgotten some task, neglected some special order, or failed to tell a staff member about where to find the extra printer ink cartridges. A few nights ago I came home and fell into bed too tired to even read, and instead indulged in some Julie Andrews therapy, and fell asleep to the classic film <em>The Sound of Music<\/em>. I woke up humming parts of the score, which I&#8217;ll invite you to sing along with me (I might have changed a few words, with apologies to Oscar Hammerstein):<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/sound-of-music-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31713 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/sound-of-music-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"476\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><em>Raindrops on boxes of plush dogs and kittens,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Carrying trash out again without mittens,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>No-invoice-boxes the UPS brings &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>These are a few of my least favorite things.<\/em><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<em>For the third time today, Point-of-Sale crashes.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Rubbing the sleep from my eyes and eyelashes&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>So much for makeup, my hair hangs in strings-<\/em><br \/>\n<em>These are a few of my least favorite things.<\/em><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Some-of-my-favorie-things-Julie-Andrews-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31715 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Some-of-my-favorie-things-Julie-Andrews-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a>Faking a breakfast with yesterday&#8217;s strudel,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Too many lunches are ramen with noodles.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ten extra pounds that 4th quarter stress brings &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>These are a few of my least favorite things.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Oh, the tape&#8217;s gone, and it&#8217;s sleeting&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Now I&#8217;m feeling sad.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ll wish for the days I can just read in peace &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And then I won&#8217;t feel&#8230;&#8230; so bad.<\/em><br \/>\nOr perhaps you&#8217;d prefer this childhood favorite, in a slightly higher key?<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1645942-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31714 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/1645942-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"348\" \/><\/a><strong>Do<\/strong><em>ugh, oh dear, we need that cash<\/em> &#8211;<br \/>\n<strong>Rain<\/strong><em>ing down to meet our bills.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Me<\/strong><em>an old loans must all be paid-<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Fa<\/strong><em>iry tales cannot be left\u00a0unsold.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>So<\/strong>,<em> we open longer hours&#8230;.<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>La<\/strong><em>sting on stale snacks and cups of&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Tea<\/strong>, <em>we reheat once again&#8230;.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>that will keep us selling books-oh-oh-oh&#8230;..<\/em> <strong>Do<\/strong><em>ugh.<\/em><br \/>\nOf course, it&#8217;s just too tempting to hum a few stanzas of every bookseller&#8217;s favorite tune from that classic film:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/von_trap_family_edelweiss_scene-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31716 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/von_trap_family_edelweiss_scene-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"443\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Edelweiss, Edelweiss, Every markup we can see.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Comps and buzz, grids to do&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But no tour visits quite near me.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>How do these booksellers read so much?<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em>Blurbs spring up like heather&#8230;&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Edelweiss, Edelweiss<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ll be hopelessly behind you forever.<\/em><br \/>\nHere&#8217;s to &#8220;climbing every mountain&#8221;
