{"id":29,"date":"2008-07-07T08:10:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-07T08:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rbicmsblog.reedbusiness.com\/elogic_660000266\/2008\/07\/07\/a-gold-star-and-best-wishes-for-a-new-bookstore\/"},"modified":"2008-07-07T08:10:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-07T08:10:00","slug":"a-gold-star-and-best-wishes-for-a-new-bookstore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=29","title":{"rendered":"A Gold Star and Best Wishes for a New Bookstore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"110\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/articles\/blog\/660000266\/20080703\/goldstar.jpg\">In honor of last Friday&#8217;s Independence Day celebrations, I thought it only right that I give a salute to an <em>independent<\/em> bookstore, as independence is what we&#8217;re all about!<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/articles\/blog\/660000266\/20080703\/mainstreet.jpg\">When I&nbsp;saw an announcement of the opening of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mainstreetbooks.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">The Mainstreet Trading Company<\/a> in last week&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/article\/CA6573542.html\" rel=\"noopener\">Children&#8217;s Bookshelf<\/a>, I&nbsp;read it aloud to Lorna and Lisa, who were within earshot, and a fight then erupted over which of us should be allowed the opportunity to move to Scotland and work for this <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebookseller.com\/news\/61614-former-bloomsbury-director-sets-up-bookshop.html\" rel=\"noopener\">lovely-sounding<\/a> store. Our interest was further piqued by a peek at the store&#8217;s wonderfully appealing logo, which screams &quot;sweet, smart and sophisticated&quot; &#8212; three qualities I admire in a kid-friendly independent bookstore.<\/p>\n<p> Co-owner Rosamund de la Hay was most recently the children&#8217;s marketing director for Bloomsbury Books, where she oversaw the launch and promotion of a series you might have heard of, about a boy wizard named Harry Potter? In other words, she ought to know a thing or two about how to draw readers to good reading.<\/p>\n<p> An article in&nbsp;the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thesouthernreporter.co.uk\/business\/St-Boswells-auction-house-begins.4195332.jp?articlepage=1\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Southern Reporter<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;quotes Rosamund&nbsp;saying that she and her husband Bill are feeling &quot;exhilarated, exhausted, excited and plain terrified.&rdquo; To them I send my sincerest best wishes (as I do to anyone else opening bookstores out there) and award them a gold star for a cracking good logo, for a nice solid-sounding store name, and for bravery.<\/p>\n<p> Anyone interested in following their lead? If so you might want to look at the ad for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reading-lasses.com\/sale.html\" rel=\"noopener\">ReadingLasses Bookshop-Caf&eacute;<\/a> (and attached living quarters!) in Wigtown, Scotland, which is currently for sale.
