{"id":27352,"date":"2018-10-12T08:00:09","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T12:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=27352"},"modified":"2018-10-12T08:00:09","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T12:00:09","slug":"the-texas-teen-book-festival-turns-10-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=27352","title":{"rendered":"The Texas Teen Book Festival Turns 10, Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">Last Saturday, thousands of readers from all over Texas celebrated the 10<sup>th<\/sup> annual <a href=\"https:\/\/texasteenbookfestival.org\/\">Texas Teen Book Festival<\/a> at St. Edwards University in Austin. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=27282\">As I wrote last week<\/a>, the months leading up to the event are filled with planning meetings, emails, and spreadsheets, as BookPeople, the Texas Book Festival, and our dedicated team of librarian volunteers put everything in place. Once the day arrives, though, there\u2019s nothing left to do but let it all happen and enjoy the show. We did have a few uncertain moments when we decided to enact our rain plan for the first time, but the show must go on, and it was great!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/wndb-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27363 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/wndb-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"322\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe kicked off the morning with an exclusive roundtable discussion for our We Need Diverse Books Essay\u2122 Contest winners, all of whom wrote thoughtful essays about \u201cThe hero I want to see\u2026\u201d These lucky\u00a0young writers got to sit down with authors Julissa Arce, David Levithan, Tochi Onyebuchi, and Cynthia Leitich Smith\u00a0along with Brenda Conway from Random House to ask questions and share thoughts about writing and publishing and the power of representation. One of my personal favorite moments of the day came when Julissa Arce realized that a number of the winners\u00a0were from her old high school in San Antonio. They couldn\u2019t have been more delighted.<!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TTBF5_NicStone_TomokoB-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27365 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TTBF5_NicStone_TomokoB-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThen we all headed to the gym for Nic Stone\u2019s powerful and\u00a0forthright keynote about sexuality and individuality and the complexity of figuring all that out\u2014no matter how old you are\u2014before launching into a day of programming that featured over 35 authors, panels, keynotes, workshops, and\u00a0day-long programming in our interactive tent. Listening to Neal and Jarrod Shusterman talk about the truly terrifying research they did\u00a0for\u00a0<em>Dry <\/em>in their afternoon keynote\u00a0was especially fascinating.<br \/>\nOne of my personal favorite sessions of the day came at the very end with our first-ever panel on activism. It was an incredible conversation about power and change and owning the feelings that make us want to fight. The look on their faces when\u00a0the authors started walking\u00a0in absolutely made my day and gave me goosebumps. It was powerful to see the kind of impact our fest is capable of having.<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/poppins-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27367 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/poppins-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"246\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a><\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Shannon Brewer, TTBF Interactive Programming Coordinator<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong><em>The\u00a0Epic Reads Costume Contest is all about bringing favorite book characters to life. Usually the event is filled with teens and adults, so imagine when this EPIC 4 year old marched up on the stage in all her sassy glory and announced into the microphone with a\u00a0British accent, of course, that she was Mary\u00a0Poppins! I wondered if the adorableness was cheating, but our audience proclaimed it no such thing. She ended up not only winning Best in Show but also having a line of adoring fans waiting to take a picture with her when the costume contest was over.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Jen Bigheart, TTBF PR Director:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Beth Revis, <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/covers-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-27380 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/covers-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a>Adib Khorram, Julie C. Dao, Richelle Mead, Tochi Onyebuchi, and Natalie C. Parker gathered for the ultimate Cover Design Challenge sponsored by Penguin Teen. Seven teams of seven gathered under the interactive tent to create their own book cover design, book synopsis, and title. Authors walked around to each team offering their expert advice. After thirty minutes of creativity, the team captains lined up with their proposed designs. The winner? Donuts and Dragons!<\/em><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TTBF14_NgoziUkazu_TomokoB-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-27361 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TTBF14_NgoziUkazu_TomokoB-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a>Julie Wernersbach, Texas Book Festival Literary Director (and TTBF Balloon Wrangler): <\/strong><em>One of my favorite moments was at the end of\u00a0Ngozi\u00a0Ukazu&#8217;s graphic storytellling workshop. All the kids were gathered around her, beaming, totally enthralled by her hands-on talk about drawing, art, and storytelling. Seeing the kids connect with her in the moment and recognizing that the light in their eyes was the excitement of knowing that writing and drawing was something they could do, too, was amazing. It made my day.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Ivy, BookPeople&#8217;s Teen Press Corps: <\/strong><em>I loved being able to watch Ngozi Ukazu draw the crazy story that the crowd came up with. If you told 13 year old me that one day I\u2019d get to lean over the shoulder of the creator of <\/em>Check Please<em> as she drew a professional jump-roper with purple hair, I\u2019d never have believed you. But TTBF makes cool stuff like that possible!\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cake-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-27364 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/cake-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a> <\/em><br \/>\nAfter a full day,\u00a0we capped everything off with some well-deserved birthday cake, and called an official wrap on TTBF 10! (Don&#8217;t worry, we had a bigger cake too.) Thanks so much to the authors, moderators, volunteers, Texas readers, exhibitors, sponsors, and everyone who participated in this memorable day.
