This was not a bad thing from an attendee standpoint; the\u00a0lack of claustrophobia\u00a0made browsing booths and meeting with editors, publicists, and authors much easier. Some of my discoveries are in a box heading back to Vermont, but I can share \u2014 in pictures more than words \u2014 a few of\u00a0my favorite highlights, from inspiring speakers to cool\u00a0promo merch to celebrity sightings:<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25950 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/MTA-coffee-Ring-side-1-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"246\" height=\"338\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25949 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/MTA-coffee-ring-copy-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"255\" height=\"341\" \/><br \/>\nMy first priority on arrival morning was coffee. Delightfully, Candlewick Press had printed up zarfs (coffee cozies) featuring\u00a0M.T .Anderson and Eugene Yelchin&#8217;s forthcoming <em>Assassination of Brangwain Spurge.<\/em><br \/>\nBooth browsing led to lots of eye-catching goodies, some new to me, some familiar:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25955 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/trailblazer-books-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"374\" \/><br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_25947\" style=\"width: 449px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25947\" class=\"wp-image-25947\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Magination-Press-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"479\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magination Press has a sweet line of tiny toddler hardcovers. Boo-Boo! (the giveaway I received) is adorable.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25948 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Marvelous-Maravillosa-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"443\" \/><br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_25945\" style=\"width: 436px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25945\" class=\"wp-image-25945\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Little-Feminist-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"463\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mudpuppy&#8217;s Little Feminist and Little Scientist board books and puzzles made me happy.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25946 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Little-Scientist-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"505\" \/><br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_25934\" style=\"width: 441px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25934\" class=\"wp-image-25934\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/fullsizeoutput_d52-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"574\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My longtime book world pal, Karen Corvello, showed me a handsome Jane Austen (juvenilia) novella forthcoming from Princeton University Press.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25935 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/fullsizeoutput_d53-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"576\" \/><br \/>\nWhere are the celebrities, you ask? Why, here you go! Nick Offerman, Megan Mullaly, Nicholas Sparks, and Barbara Kingsolver listen intently to the brilliant Trevor Noah at\u00a0the first Author Breakfast:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25938\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Adult-author-breakfast-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1218\" height=\"502\" \/><br \/>\nAnd American historian Jill Lepore&#8217;s segment of the panel was also so fabulous that Nick Offerman (best known as <em>Parks and Rec<\/em>&#8216;s Ron Swanson, said (I may be paraphrasing), &#8220;Well, you just handed the rest of us our a**es.&#8221; Her upcoming book, <em>These Truths<\/em>, is 1000+ pages, so publisher Norton made up a sampler to give out:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25959 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Jill-Lepore-1-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"350\" \/><br \/>\nThe second Author Breakfast\u00a0had a fantastic panel of children&#8217;s book authors: Meg Medina, Dave Eggers, Jacqueline Woodson, Yuyi Morales, and Viola Davis!<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/images\/cached\/ARTICLE_PHOTO\/photo\/000\/000\/054\/54774-v1-600x.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">As you can tell from the great quality of this group photo, it&#8217;s PW&#8217;s, not mine.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_25962\" style=\"width: 406px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25962\" class=\"wp-image-25962\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Jacquie-Woodson-1-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"647\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The incomparable Jacqueline Woodson moderated. Her first question, so thoughtfully asked, was to make sure everyone in the back of the room could hear. (Isn&#8217;t that just like her, and shouldn&#8217;t it be like all of us?)<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nMake sure to check out all of the children&#8217;s book award winners announced at the breakfast! Sally Field.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nSpeaking of which, how is it that Sally Field still looks pretty much exactly like this?<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/entervideo.net\/thumbs\/the_flying_nun-_season_02_-_episode_01___57c790520a8eb.mp4.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><br \/>\nWe weren&#8217;t the only trade show at the Javits Center last week. I caught several BookExpo attendees trying to sneak into the\u00a0Cannabis Expo&#8217;s show floor. And who wouldn&#8217;t, if only to\u00a0have a chance to hear this speaker?!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25936 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_6753-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"559\" \/><br \/>\nAmazing. What have I left out? TONS of great moments, which I am sure many many other sources will provide. I&#8217;m hoping to see photos of the children&#8217;s book art Silent Auction, which was filled with beautiful artwork and hosted fabulously by Sean Qualls and Selina Alko.<br \/>\nAll too soon, it was time to pack up the Airbnb apartment a few blocks from the Javits Center and to say goodbye to the gourd outside, for which I have developed an inordinate fondness.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25965 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/NY-Gourd-1-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"428\" \/><br \/>\nAnd it was, sadly, also time to say goodbye to the best thing about New York, the constant unexpected encounters with unexpected, quirky, funny, and beautiful moments and people on\u00a0its streets.
