Did you know you can receive the text of the program via e-mail?&nbsp;In your inbox each day will arrive a poem + interesting historical events and author birthdays that correspond to each day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was both happy and impressed to see&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.katedicamillo.com\/\">Kate DiCamillo&#39;s<\/a> birthday&nbsp;featured in <a href=\"http:\/\/writersalmanac.publicradio.org\/programs\/2007\/03\/19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yesterday&#39;s issue<\/a>, as <em>The Writer&#39;s Almanac<\/em> generally includes relatively few contemporary authors and illustrators of children&#39;s and young adult literature.&nbsp;Seeing Kate&#39;s name alongside those of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flannery_O'Connor\">Flannery O&#39;Connor<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatwomen.org\/women.php?action=viewone&#38;id=150\">Gloria Steinem<\/a> suggests to me that Kate has truly reached the status of &#34;household name,&#34; at least in those households that include young readers, or have in recent years.&nbsp;Or maybe it just suggests that Garrison Keillor is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.katedicamillo.com\/books\/tale.html\">Despereaux<\/a> fan?&nbsp;Either way I say hooray for <em>The Writer&#39;s Almanac<\/em> for thinking Kate&#39;s birthday deserves as much&nbsp;mention as those of&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jcf.org\/\">Joseph Campbell<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/americanmasters\/database\/williams_t.html\">Tennessee Williams<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.english.uiuc.edu\/maps\/poets\/a_f\/frost\/frost.htm\">Robert Frost<\/a> (today&#39;s celebrants).<\/p>\n<p>Want to find reasons to celebrate your favorite children&#39;s and young adult books EVERY day?&nbsp;I recommend purchasing a copy of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pkpress.com\/products_calendar.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celebrating Children&#39;s Books calendar<\/a>&nbsp;put together every&nbsp;year by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pkpress.com\/\">Peaceable Kingdom Press<\/a>.&nbsp;Each month features an illustration by a different children&#39;s book illustrator, and scattered throughout are&nbsp;birthdays of well-known (or at least moderately well-known) children&#39;s book authors and illustrators.&nbsp;Looking ahead at my own copy of the calendar I can tell you who you should be celebrating and\/or sending cards to&nbsp;in April:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trina_Schart_Hyman\">Trina Schart Hyman<\/a> (4\/8), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gramatky.com\/\">Hardie Gramatky<\/a> (4\/12), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.answers.com\/topic\/frank-remkiewicz\">Frank Remkiewicz<\/a> (4\/14), <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garth_Williams\">Garth Williams<\/a> (4\/14), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.melissasweet.net\/\">Melissa Sweet<\/a> (4\/19), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/titles\/missspider\/author.htm\">David Kirk<\/a> (4\/25), and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ludwig_Bemelmans\">Ludwig Bemelmans<\/a> (4\/28).<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/articles\/blog\/660000266\/20070326\/calendarbest.jpg\" \/><br \/> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I thoroughly enjoy my daily subscription to The Writer&#8217;s Almanac with Garrison Keillor from Public Radio International, which many of you probably hear during your&nbsp;daily commute.
