Quality only has bearing on quantity here. The book might be good, like Kwame Alexander&#8217;s <em>Surf&#8217;s Up<\/em>, the book might be gratuitous fluff, like <em>Richard Rhino&#8217;s Read Aloud Rumble\u00b9<\/em>, but the only thing at stake is the quantity. We are compelled as buyers by an unseen, intractable force to bring in at least one.<br \/>\nConversations like these happen no less than twice a sales call.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366\">Rep<\/span>: I have to call your attention to <em>The Hour of the Book<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\">Buyer<\/span>: Well, I know that <em>The Tortoise Wars<\/em> sold back in the day, but her last three books have all been bombs. I didn\u2019t move a single <em>Lettuce Diaries<\/em>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366\">Rep<\/span>: I know. That was a disappointment for everyone, but <em>The Hour of the Book<\/em> focuses on the power of books to restore hope and happiness after profound loss.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\">Buyer<\/span>: (Intends to say: &#8216;whatever&#8217; actually says\u2026) All right, I&#8217;ll represent it.<br \/>\n(Later on in the buy)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SERGIONEW-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17916\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17916\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SERGIONEW-2.jpg\" alt=\"SERGIONEW\" width=\"220\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a>Rep<\/span>: I&#8217;m surprised you didn\u2019t pick up <em>Ms. Lively&#8217;s Lugubrious Library<\/em>.\u00b9 Did you mean to skip that?<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\">Buyer<\/span>: Well, that&#8217;s a terrible title and the rhyming couplets opened a gaping void under my feet.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366\">Rep:<\/span> I hear you, but the story is all about how shared reading draws children out of isolation and into new friendships and a passion for learning.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\">Buyer<\/span>: Right, but the art is so computer-generated that I found it almost impossible to read the text. Actually, I wish it had been impossible because I can\u2019t seem to expunge lines like,<br \/>\n<em>Each page is a footstep, each story a gurney,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That wheels you along a fabulous journey<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #003366\">Rep<\/span>: It has a great message, Kenny, about the power of books and reading. Library accounts are sure to want it.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300\">Buyer<\/span>: (Intends to say &#8216;No, no, No, I never want to see or think about this book again.&#8217; Actually says\u2026) Okay, I&#8217;ll bring in two.<br \/>\nI can&#8217;t find any copies of a signed contract in my office enforcing this universal law of buying.
