{"id":17433,"date":"2015-11-11T09:55:16","date_gmt":"2015-11-11T14:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=17433"},"modified":"2015-11-11T09:55:16","modified_gmt":"2015-11-11T14:55:16","slug":"thousands-of-kids-150-volunteers-and-45-authors-and-artists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=17433","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of Kids, 150 Volunteers, and 45 Authors and Artists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/?p=6466\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blogged<\/a> before about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochesterchildrensbookfestival.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rochester Children&#8217;s Book Festival<\/a> and its splendors, but I can&#8217;t help writing about it again. It is a splendiferous occasion, full of funny moments with kids and parents, staffed by the most well-trained team of enthusiastic, helpful volunteers you could ever hope to meet. And at the end of it all is a dinner with colleagues and a writing-themed, sing-along musical penned by one of the festival organizers, Elizabeth &#8220;Sibby&#8221; Falk.<br \/>\nTo give you an idea of what the day is like, here&#8217;s a representative moment:<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_17463\" style=\"width: 563px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/11251213_775911699186207_8568138250114977767_n1-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17463\" class=\"wp-image-17463\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.publishersweekly.com\/blogs\/shelftalker\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/11251213_775911699186207_8568138250114977767_n1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo \u00a92015 Rochester Children&#8217;s Book Festival<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nI&#8217;m not sure how many people attend, but it&#8217;s in the thousands. The doors open, people pour in, and it&#8217;s packed from 10 am to 4 pm.<!--more-->Families, teachers, librarians, and tons of children (from ages 0 to around 13) flood Monroe Community College, and roam around looking at books, collecting autographs, doing incredibly creative crafts set up by the volunteer team, and attending readings and presentations given by dozens of authors and illustrators. It&#8217;s overwhelming \u2014 and fantastic!<br \/>\nThe team of 150 volunteers help out in\u00a0the Liftbridge Bookstore sales room, lead the crafts and activities, check in with the\u00a0authors to make sure we have pens, water, food,\u00a0and that we make it to our presentations on time. Every year, I am wildly impressed by their organization and calm attentiveness. There were also sign language interpreters for every single presentation.<br \/>\nIn the week leading up to the festival, one of its founders, author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vivianvandevelde.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vivian Vande Velde<\/a>, organizes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rochesterchildrensbookfestival.com\/index\/for-teacherslibrarians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Festival to Go<\/a>, which brings authors and artists into the most budget-strapped Rochester schools, so that even kids who aren&#8217;t\u00a0able to attend the Saturday event get to meet some of their literary heroes.<br \/>\nThe Rochester Book Festival\u00a0is an awe-inspiring collaboration, led by <a href=\"http:\/\/elizabethfalkbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elizabeth &#8220;Sibby&#8221; Falk<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kmblasi.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kathleen Blasi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocparent.com\/education\/raising-readers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Mead<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/barbaraunderhill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barbara Underhill<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocparent.com\/rochester-childrens-book-festival-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vicki Dodds Schultz<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.auchbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MJ and Herm Auch<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vivianvandevelde.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vivian Vande Velde<\/a>, and\u00a0many, many other phenomenal people. I had &#8230; drum roll &#8230; teachers&#8217; guides. Sigh. But they did come in handy.<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nAfter the festival, a group of happily exhausted authors, illustrators, organizers, and volunteers pile into a terrific Italian restaurant and have a party. Every year, Sibby writes a musical (last year, to songs from <em>The Sound of Music<\/em>, this year to a Beatles-and-beyond medley of songs), with original lyrics about the writing and publishing process.
