WW Ladies Book Club

Barbara Vey -- February 24th, 2014

Still opening all the packages of books that came to my house while I was in Florida.  So many I want to read.  I think I need to lock up my computer after blogging and just read for about a week straight.  Nothing puts balance back into this chaotic world like reading a good book.  Here’s a look at what the WW Ladies have been reading.

Clean Sweep by Ilona AndrewsClean-Sweep-Cover-Small

Read by joysann

The Bed-and-Breakfast that Dina Demille runs in a quiet Texas town doesn’t appear unusual, but Dina is from a long line of innkeepers that shelter supernaturals and aliens and otherworldly beings. When an vicious creature infiltrates the neighborhood and begins the slaughter of local pets, Dina feels she must intervene before people start dying. With the help of an intriguing but reluctant werewolf and an outrageously handsome vampire alien, Dina uses her own magic and the intrinsic magic of the amazing house to continue the work her family has done for generations.

Ilona Andrews first released Clean Sweep as a serial posted to her website, and the cliff-hanger chapters had me checking almost daily for a new installment. I can’t say how glad I am to see it now released as a book in whole, and I was delighted to read it again all polished and shiny. It’s exciting, mysterious, titillating, and a lot of fun.

One Day in Apple Grove by C. H. Admirand1402269021

Read by Joan

After serving in the Middle East as a medic, Dr. Jack Gannon has returned to his hometown of Apple Grove, Ohio, to take over his father’s medical practice. Caitlin Mulcahy was taking the long way home from her last handyman job when she notices the Doc’s car parked at the side of the road, and stops to see how she might help. A black bundle of fur jumps into her arms, with Doc chasing the small puppy not far behind. Now as they decide how to take care of her just until the puppy’s owner is found, Cait realizes that there is more to the man than just being her older sister’s old friend.

This is the second book in the series, and though I haven’t read the first, I did not have any problem following this story. I was enchanted by it since I grew up in a small Ohio town like Apple Grove, plus I was familiar with many of the areas mentioned in the book.

The War Bride Club by Soraya LaneThe_War_Bride_Club

/
Read by Heidi H.

..
Four British women who had married American GI’s during World War II and were then sent aboard a ship bound for New York to live with their new American families. Each woman has her own story and all start out hopeful and eager. The bond of friendship unites them for their journey to an unknown world. Madeline, Alice, June, and Betty face hardships at sea, heartache, love, and pain in New York, and through it all lean on each other.

.
I found this to be a story for women, about women. It is a romance, a coming of age and a lesson on friendship all rolled into one. It evokes a bygone time when women stood together and gave the gifts of strength and hope no matter the circumstances.  Empowering.

Dr. Jessica Rae is a paediatric consultant, who is called out when a nursery minibus is in a major accident. She is the one on call to go and help the injured children. Little does she know that she will come face-to-face with the one man she hoped to forget. Callum Kennedy is one of the best in the rope rescue units. He can’t believe he has to work side by side with the woman who took his heart. But time and circumstances have changed both of them, and they realize they must sort out the rekindled feelings between them, and face the future, together or apart.

I was really intrigued by the inner-struggle that both Jessica and Callum had and how their past connection brought up some deep resentment and deeper love. I thought it was really romantic the way they worked to fight through the struggle which brought them together. This book really spoke to me about how love can conquer all things, even in the most dire of past experiences.

What the Duke Desires by Sabrina Jeffries16130107

Read by Heidi H.

Max Cale, the Duke of Lyons, takes Lisette Bonnaud to France, looking for her brother who is supposed to have information about his brother who was kidnapped and presumed dead.
The two, naturally, find themselves alone together and the plot thickens.

I love a heroine who can match wits with a Duke and come out on top!  Fun, sexy and delightful.

Fixed (A Gin & Tonic Mystery) by L.A. Kornetsky9781451671650

Read by joysann

Personal concierge Ginny Mallard and bartender Teddy Tonica team up again when they’re asked to investigate a theft of funds from a no-kill animal shelter. As their investigation starts uncovering a long-term embezzlement, a dead body complicates the situation. With even the animals unsettled by the goings-on at the shelter, Ginny and Teddy are unwilling to give up on the mystery even when they’re told to back out.

I sure like the opportunity to read mysteries that aren’t all shoot-’em-up or violent, so the calm and cerebral investigations L.A Kornetsky offers are refreshing. To my way of thinking, it’s a plus that Ginny’s dog and Tonica’s companion cat are quietly driving forces in the team’s investigations, not that the humans are aware of it. I’m enjoying Ginny and Teddy a lot, and continue to be interested in their tentatively growing friendship.

Lending a Paw by Laurie CassLendingAPaw

Read by Joan

In the three years since she took the job as assistant director for the Chilson, Michigan, library district, Minnie Hamilton has worked hard to acquire the funding for a starting a new bookmobile program. On the premier voyage of the new route, Minnie’s cat, Eddie, leads her to the murder site of the rich benefactor who supported the acquisition of the bookmobile. As almost everyone in town could have a motive for the murder, Minnie, with Eddie’s help, does her own investigating.

Lending a Paw has everything I like in fun-to-read books; a mystery, a strong lead for a heroine, a cat and some romance. While sleuthing, Minnie meets the handsome Dr.Tucker Kleinow, who I hope we will see more of in the next book.

Snowbound with Dr. Delectable by Susan Carlislesnowbound-1

Read by Heidi

Dr. Kyle Campbell would do anything not to be back on a mountain, skiing while helping on the slopes. Baylie Walker loves being in charge of all the volunteers who work on the slopes, even if Kyle is a pain in her neck. But as feelings seem to grow between them, they realize they both have secrets to sort out and there may not be room for love in their lives.

Running on Empty by Colette Ballard7035823

Read by Heidi H.

When her boyfriend assaults her, River accidentally shoots him, the local Golden Boy. Knowing she will never get a fair chance, she goes on the run with her two best friends. As the girls grow up they learn to trust each other and still manage to help River find a way to beat the charges.

This  Young Adult book pushed my acceptable boundaries with some lifestyle choices. I continued reading and very quickly got past that because the story was so compelling and well-written.  I liked River and her friend, Justice, and how they cautiously allowed their friendship to grow into more. A compelling story that kept me up all night reading.  Satisfying and surprising.

Bottom Line:  Today is National Cupcake Day (in Canada) and I plan to show my solidarity by having a cupcake in honor of Canada.

Hot New Releases!

Barbara Vey -- January 7th, 2014

I finally made it to warm Florida from the frozen tundra.  Although I left -13 degrees, it was only in the 50’s when I arrived, but it felt downright balmy.  It’ll hit the 80s by the end of the week and I’ll be in Orlando attending the Seymour Agency Author Retreat.  This is the only way to appreciate winter.  I brought 6 paperbacks with me, but I’ve got a ton more on my e-reader.  I thought I was all set and now here’s a bunch of new releases to chooses from.
