Missouri Romance Writers

MORWAbanner4

I was thrilled to spend this weekend with the MORWA writers group.  It really was a twofer since my son and his family live in the area.  I got to spend Friday with the grandkids (they were off of school) and Sunday celebrating my grandson’s 13th birthday with paintball and 14 of his friends.

Friday evening I got to mix and mingle with the MORWA group at dinner.  We talked books which are my favorite topic.  One of the big questions I always get is if a certain genre is selling.  There certainly is no easy answer to this.  There will always be readers for a variety of genres, but what the big one is or will be is anyone’s guess.  The readers I talk to love a variety of books and most will read almost anything.  They love western, romantic suspense, paranormal, erotica, inspirational, YA, mysteries and historicals.  I might have missed mentioning some, but if you name them, I’m sure there are readers for them.  The tricky part is always getting the readers to find the authors.

The surprise of the evening was Jade Lee stopping by as she was in town for a book signing.  There’s no lack of conversation or fun when Jade is around.  One of the great parts of these mixers is the variety of writers who attend.  There was a brand new member along with New York Times bestselling authors, published and unpublished authors.  I love how you can talk about anything and everything and still the conversation seem to get back around books.

MORWA starts off it’s morning meeting with an optional event, Coffee Talk.  Maggie Mae Gallagher presented a program on what an author’s assistant is and what they can offer authors.  There was much interest in this subject as many writers find themselves strapped for time while trying to write books, raise families, work a full time job and still try to get the word out there on their books.  Many were grateful to know there are options out there to help them succeed.

My portion of the program was on Building Reader Loyalty.  I have an amazing slide show presentation that I was anxious to show them that was developed by my niece, Jenny.  Unfortunately, the projector couldn’t be connected, so I just winged it.  It still went well with the crowded room and we had a terrific discussion about readers, how to reach them and how to keep them.  I was very impressed with the questions and comments from the group.  We talked about Street Teams, connecting with readers, book covers and self publishing.  I loved connecting with this savvy group of enthusiastic writers.

Bottom Line:  Another group to cross off my list as I make my way across the country in my quest to visit every writer group.  January it will be Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale.

RT Invades Kansas City

Barbara Vey -- May 2nd, 2013

I just arrived in Kansas City for the RT Booklover’s Convention’s 30th Anniversary.  The event started Monday with a preconvention of sightseeing and writer’s bookcamp.  It’s a huge Sheraton Hotel and has a walkway that lead to shopping, food and the overflow hotel.  I’m glad I’m not over there because I heard it’s about a half a mile walk and when you’re lugging books and goodies all day back to your room, it can be a little much.  But it doesn’t stop the hoards of readers and writers who attend this event.

There’s something happening all the time and I just managed to get to a few of them on Wednesday because when you come to something like this, you can barely walk two feet without seeing someone you know and you just have to stop and chat for a few minutes.  If you go to the restaurant, you never have to eat alone, there’s readers and writers galore who’d love to talk to you about books.

There was a cover model meet and greet that was a special ticket only event, but Morgan sent me this great shot of Men in Tights.  I’m not sure if they were channeling pirates or Robin Hood, but I could hear a lot of hooting and hollering coming from the room.

Authors get together and sponsor all different events.  The sci-fi group put on the Intergalactic Bar and Grill.  There were blow up alien dolls and goodie bags stuffed with books. They challenged readers with trivia questions, so one had to dig out of their memories the details of old movies and TV shows. .

Kensington Publishing offered a readers event where they were separated into groups with authors and told to come up with the perfect paranormal hero.  Sorry to say they didn’t send me the final result, but there were a lot of suggestions from the readers so I guess they think about this a lot.

The historical authors were all at Rosie’s  Gulch Saloon.  They were dressed in their saloon finery and readers were given cards with questions on them that they had to get answered by the authors who were stationed around the room.  Then winning tickets were picked for prizes.  But everyone manages to walk away with a goodie bag filled with books, t-shirt, playing cards and other swag.  When you come to these events, you really need to bring an extra suitcase.

The big party of the night was the Ellora’s Cave’s Disco.  Everyone dresses to the hilt and there is food, dancing and even more giveaways.  Ellora Cavemen were there, so there was plenty to look at.  Everyone left tired, but with smiles on their faces.EC Disco

5th Anniversary Bash: Romance Blowout

Barbara Vey -- March 10th, 2012

I can’t believe we’re at the end of the week already.  This party has been incredible and today is no exception.  We’re in Venice for the Romance Blowout!  These incredible authors have gotten together to to give you readers a sendoff to remember.  There’s great prizes and lots of party stuff.  There’s food, entertainment and great atmosphere.

Which one is Sven?

Which one is Sven?

WARNING: Romance Bandits bloggers are INVADING Venice. That’s right – watch for major surprises throughout the day.  (Hint: think “instant win”) They’re walking in now with a giant silver punchbowl of the Goddess Sangria’s secret recipe (a potent, Champagne-laced potion and credited with at least three magical love affairs) and all of the Bandit lair’s swarthy male staff..including the famous Bandita Cabana Boys, the Gladiators, the  Hockey Hunks, and yes….they’re even bringing Sven, who will give his incredible massages to guests until his amazing hands are worn out.  Just remember, what happens at Barbara’s bash STAYS at Barbara’s bash, and the Banditas will hold you to that…after all, they do have their party reputations to consider.  They promise to NOT bring the Golden Rooster…well, not if they can catch him anyway.

Allie Boniface is carrying in beautiful bouquets of Venetian Roses and Anju Gattani is bringing in a designer sari from India’s leading fashion designer (for women), Anita Dongre who designed the wedding trousseau for Sheetal Dhanraj.  Desiree Holt was thinking flowers also with two dozen roses, a case of champagne and scented oils.

.

To go along with the champagne, Jennifer Haymore stumbled upon the Donovan sister’s secret stash of Antiguan rum, so she’s bringing over a couple cases!  It’s not a party without wine, so good thing Roxanne St. Claire is bringing over a few more bottles.

For food, the ladies of The Ballroom Blog — Katharine Ashe, Sabrina Darby, Tessa Dare, Gaelen Foley, Sarah MacLean and Miranda Neville — will bring their favorite party delights to share, spiked ratafia and lobster patties!  Barbara Monajem has lots of Eccles Cakes.  Casey Crow says, “I’m bringing an empty stomach so I can eat tons of pizza and pasta.”  Well, nobody’s brought any pizza or pasta yet, but the day is young.  Jill Shalvis is bringing gourmet chocolates to make sure our party ends on a sweet note.

Carla Swafford  I’ll bring balloons. For there’s nothing better than dozens upon dozens of floating bright colored balloons to make a party…well, feel like a party!

.

Nic

Sabrina Jeffries   No party is complete without proper entertainment. Sabrina Jeffries will bring her Regency dance moves to kick off the day of revelry.  While Lauren Hunter feels that bringing Josh Groban is definitely a good party move.  Kristine Cayne & Dana Delamar feel Nic “The Lover” Lamoureux will thrill the romance readers.

.

Josh Groban

Ever logical Joan Swan says, “Dramamine, for those of us who get motion sick but who wouldn’t miss a serenade on a gondola by a sexy Venetian gondolier for a anything.”

Becky Barker wants to know, “So ladies, if you could choose a fantasy hero for your Saturday night date, would it be an all-American guy with blond hair and light eyes? Or a dark-haired, dark-eyed guy who’s just a bit dangerous? No cheating, you have to pick just one.”

Bottom Line:  Best 5th Anniversary Party ever!!
