RWA Conference in Atlanta

Barbara Vey -- July 22nd, 2013
Close encounter of the best kind. Reader, Lynda, meeting 2 of her favorite authors Jill Shalvis and Kristin Higgins

Close encounter of the best kind. Reader, Lynda, meeting 2 of her favorite authors Jill Shalvis and Kristan Higgins

The RWA Conference in Atlanta was extremely successful according to those attending (and I totally agree).  From veterans to newbies, there was something for everyone.  I love watching the first timers when they come face to face with authors they’ve been reading and enjoying for years.  It’s something like shock, admiration, and that ultimate, “I can’t believe this is happening” moment.  One new author was sitting next to a New York Times bestselling author and chatting with her for quite a while before she realized who she was talking to.  Once the lightbulb came on, she was horrified that she didn’t recognize her immediately and then embarrassed, but ultimately the NYT author put her at ease and they all had a good laugh over it.  Really, how it anyone expected to know what every author looks like?  Thank goodness for name badges.

Many special interest groups of RWA get together during the conference and the Beau Monde group sent me a write up of their event.  According to Kristen Koster, “This past Wednesday, the Beau Monde chapter of the Romance Writers of America gathered for their annual mini conference in Atlanta. Eileen Dreyer opened the day with an entertaining speech. Morning workshops included such topics as A Hero’s Military History: Beyond Trafalgar and Waterloo, The Grand Tour, Doctor’s & Quacks in the Regency, and a panel on Historical Accuracy.

Katherine Ashe gave an inspiration lunchtime keynote before attendees enjoyed more workshops on The Regency Underworld and a tour through the thieves rookeries of London, a presentation on a young ladies repertoire in music, the Cultural Melting pot of Georgian England and a hands on workshop to learn how to play whist.

It was a full day indeed with high tea served in the afternoon, but that evening the ladies gathered for a soiree that included period dress, traditional English dances.”

Anne Barton, Valerie Bowman, Erin Knightly, Ashlyn Macnamara, and Sara Ramsey

Joysann reported on a well attended workshop. Living the Dream: How to Survive Your First Book Deal. These authors debuted in the last year or so, and they discovered how much more to authoring there is than writing a book. They made note of several things, and gave advice about others. One observation: That second book you’re writing now that the first is on its way? Plan on it taking several months longer to complete than the first did, what with edits on the first, working publicity on social media, blogs, and book signings, and the many things you didn’t have to contend with while writing the first. Sounds like a fair warning.

Even the elevators became part of the conference

I know I’m letting you know about things out of order, but there will be more coming throughout this week.  I definitely wanted to get in the names (and faces) of the Rita and Golden Heart winners today because they were shining stars at the RWA.

Romance Writers of America Launches 2013 Award Finalists Online Series

Barbara Vey -- April 11th, 2013

Chat computer key.
To help the readers get to know the Rita Award nominees this year, RWA will be sponsoring a series of online events.  Think of it like the Academy Awards and how they let people see the movies before the awards ceremony.  You get to find out all about the books nominated, so you’ll have a chance to read the books before the awards are given out in July.

Here’s what the RWA has to say:

In an effort to connect America’s most popular romance writers with their fans across the world, Romance Writers of America® (RWA) is launching an 11-week series of interactive video chat events highlighting 2013 RITA Award finalist authors. Fans will have the unique opportunity to meet one another and ask their favorite authors questions face-to-face in an intimate online environment.
Rita Award
The series kicks off April 11 at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST with RITA finalists in the Contemporary Single Title Romance category: Barbara Freethy, Barbara Hannay, Ruthie Knox, Kim Law, Roni Loren, Jill Shalvis, and Roxanne St. Claire.

To view a full schedule and to RSVP, please visit http://www.rwa.org/RITAchat. Follow RWA on Twitter @romancewriters (#RITAchat) during the chats.

The events are free to the public, and only 1,000 spots are available at each of the weekly events.

Each week, one lucky participant will win a copy of the books in that week’s spotlighted RITA category.

The RITA award categories are: Best First Book, Contemporary Single Title Romance, Historical Romance, Inspirational Romance, Long Contemporary Series Romance, Novel with Strong Romantic Elements, Paranormal Romance, Romance Novella, Romantic Suspense, Short Contemporary Series Romance, and Young Adult Romance.

Bottom Line:  Now no one will be able to say, “I’ve never heard of that book.”

Getting the Call

Barbara Vey -- March 25th, 2011
Rita Award

Rita Award

Today is a big day for Romance Writers of America.   The finalist for the Ritas and Golden Hearts will be announced.  But before it’s made public, those fortunate authors will be notified by phone.  According to the RWA website:

Notification will be sent to finalists by two-day delivery. Phone calls to notify finalists will also commence. Release of official finalist list on RWA website by 2 p.m. CT.

So today there are a lot of anxious writers out there clutching their cellphones and waiting to hear the words they’ve worked so hard for.   Across the internet, there are several sites  available for people to post when the finalist is notified and I’d like to make this blog also available.

Golden Heart

If you’ve received the call, or know of someone who has, please feel free to post their name, the name of the book and the category.

Congratulations to all who took that big step to even put your work out there to be judged.  My hat’s off to you.

Bottom Line: There’s all different ways to win and may this day be a stepping stone for many.

RWA: The Rita Awards

After all the parties on Friday, everyone is moving kind of slow.  There’s still plenty of workshops and the remaining publishers offer up free books at their author signings (NAL, Sourcebooks, St. Martin’s Press, Grand Central).  One of the workshops, Talking the Talk: Writing Historical Dialogue, was about giving tips for keeping character’s conversations from sounding artificial or antique.  Tip…remember to be consistent and be careful of anachronisms because someone will catch your mistakes.  Forsooth!

I was on a panel with author Rebecca York, Borders Romance Buyer Sue Grimshaw and Circle of Seven CEO Sheila Clover English.  We discussed Successful Promotion: Saving Time and Money While Reaching Your Goal.  Sheila’s best tip…Be consistent, be honest, be passionate.  I couldn’t agree more.

Now it was time for the event everyone gets all dolled up for…The Rita Awards.  First the Golden Heart is given out for unpublished romance fiction manuscripts and the Rita’s for published romance fiction novels.  The emcee this year was Sabrina Jeffries who’s running gag was her trying to snatch a Rita from whoever was near.  There were even some photos of her sneaking into Nora Roberts’ home for one of her’s because she has so many, it wouldn’t be missed.

.

Slides were shown of past Rita events and you could hear the oohs and ahs as people remembered when they happened.  Because it was the 30th Anniversary of RWA, there was also a dinner this year (while everything was lovely…please…no more chicken for a while).

.

Now it was time for the awards.  And the winners were:

Debbie Macomber was awarded the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award.  She looked lovely (and you’ll see why in the picture) as she talked about being dyslexic, starting her writing career on a rented typewriter and thanking all her agents (yes, she has several).  It was announced that another Mrs. Miracle movie will be shown on Lifetime and Debbie will have her own line of yarn out soon.  Amazing the empire that can grow out of writing a good story.

At the Sabrina Jeffries after party, I found out that I wasn’t the only one who wore matching outfits.  Sabrina herself had a duplicate and so did Nancy Berland and Lori Keizer.  I’m still waiting for Sabrina’s brother to send me the picture, but I thought we could play…Who Wore it Better?
