Pole Dancing at the Library

Barbara Vey -- January 21st, 2013

I really have to thank joysann for posting this on Facebook the other day.  As many of you know, joysann works at a library, so this has special meaning for her.,

The Huffington Post reported that libraries have been trying new ways to get patrons into their libraries, but this one is a doozy, even in my book.  Pole dancing classes!

Magic Mike Moves

The public library is in Scotland and according to the Huffington Post, “The event will take place on “Love Your Library Day,” and is described as “pole fitness.” Local musicians will also be performing that day.”

My library never has a pole dancing day.  The most excitement we get is from Chuckles the clown and he actually scares me more than entertains me.  Maybe there could be a Magic Mike Day where male dancers can give fitness lessons.  I’m sure they’d have a packed house.

Any other suggestions to get people into libraries?

Bottom Line:  I tried pole dancing on a party bus once…it wasn’t pretty.

Magic Mike

Magic Mike

Magic Mike

Last night was Girl’s Night Out.  I went with my sisters and nieces to see Channing Tatum shake his stuff in Magic Mike.  He did not disappoint.

The story is about Mike, a workaholic who works construction, auto detailing and, by the way, is also a stripper.  But that’s not all.  He does it all to save enough money to do what he really wants which is to make custom furniture from stuff he finds laying around.  Mike meets “The Kid” at his construction job and brings him into the world of strippers.

Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey as Dallas

There is a romance trying to bud, but it needs more sunshine and water.  The story is pretty weak, but the dance numbers more than make up for.  Matthew McConaughey is at his finest as the kind of slimy, sleazy strip club owner who’s voice could melt butter.

The theater was filled with women anxious to have a good time.  Most came in groups of 6 or more and the mood was kind of like going out for a bachelorette party.  From my point of view, they could have done without the talking all together and just did the dance numbers.  There were quite a few funny moments and as my sister said, “It was cheaper than going to a strip club.”

After I got home, I started to wonder if this could be a book.  Not so much.  This was a very visual experience that I couldn’t think words could justify.  The screenplay must have read something like, “Blah, blah, blah.”  Magic Mike gyrates takes his clothes off.

Bottom Line:  Fun movie to see with your women friends…and a couple of bottles of wine wouldn’t hurt either.
