Barbara Vey -- March 15th, 2013

DowntonAbbey

Friday brings us to Downton Abbey a fictional Yorkshire country estate of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era. History plays a big part in the story and shows the effect on their lives and on the British social hierarchy. We’ve lived through the sinking of the Titanic in the first series, the outbreak of World War I, and the Interwar period and the formation of the Irish Free State in the third series.  Feel free to socialize with those upstairs and downstairs.

carriage ride

Bronwen Evans offered a carriage for rides around the estate.  Courtney Sheets just put out English fairy cakes and honey mead for refreshments. Edie Ramer has Treacle Tarts and Crepes Francaise, served by handsome Downtown Abbey footman, Jimmy Kent.  Elizabeth Essex is wearing her best tea hat, and is bringing her well-bred, gracious southern demeanor, so she can teach everyone to smile and say, “Well, bless your heart,” to the Dowager Duchess when she gets snippy.  Mary Hughes has an old oil lamp that could do with a bit of a polish, but when the Downton Abbey downstairs maid lights it, its flame burns unnaturally bright…

Shana Galen will bring the Apple Charlotte. Poor Mrs. Patmore deserves a break. and even though her eyes are better now, she might be reluctant to try that recipe again.  Victoria Hinshaw came with her  “fine landau drawn by four dapple grays carrying fine champagne, smuggled into Britain ”

godiva

Natasha Blackthorne went all out with a huge white cake with vanilla cream frosting, decorated with sugared grapes, strawberries and Rainier cherries. Enough Godiva chocolates to fill a sideboard. Dozens of red, pink or yellow roses with crystal vases (Everyone will have a vase in their bedchamber, along with an assortment of bath salts and oils). White beeswax pillar candles with brass holders. A string quartet for dancing until dawn.

Lisa Mondello is bringing “An assortment of my favorite flavored coffees and 5 sexy Texas cowboys to help serve! Or cuddle. The choice is yours!”  But she’s not the only one thinking cowboy.  Barbara McMahon came with guitar playing cowboys.  Blythe Gifford’s sending the Brunson Clan to entertain by singing some wonderful Scottish Border Ballads.

cowboys

Cherise DeLand came with a TDH Comanche chieftain from south Texas, wearing a supple buckskin loin cloth (nothing else) and serving everyone great Texas Riesling and Lone Star beer with chips and queso!

Colleen Quinn set out beautiful roses.  Anne Tenino is also thinking decorations with crochet penises, so a few of those as table centerpieces. Lucy Felthouse just hung balloons, streamers and brought a delicious Victoria sponge cake.

Cameo says, “The Crawley family has a lot of money, but notably no pet dragons. They can borrow mine for today. I’m also bringing some old-fashioned mead and some pizzas (the dragons love pizza!).”  Heather Long is bringing a Uniformed officer.  Not sure why.  Jennifer Bernard came with a few of the hunky Bachelor Firemen just in case a fire breaks out. They’re guaranteed to heat the place up with or without a fire.  Christine Cayne is also coming with some really hot firefighters!

firemen

Carlene Love Flores brought Shirley Temples with extra cherries and a few fine Brits from 80′s bands to serve them up!  Debra Salonen is passing out lemon drops courtesy of her awesome bartender daughter.  Jaci Burton is pusher her Chocolate martinis.  Jane Godman came bearing my favorite Cucumber sandwiches (with the crusts cut off, of course) and dainty French macaroons.  Jeanne Lin says, “A plate of petit fours for tea. Because it doesn’t count as having cake if they’re small.”

Koko Brown says, “I’m bringing the sexy geek well versed in English history and proper etiquette. He also has a naughty side, which can only be revealed one layer at a time.”

sandwiches

Lori Perkins told me, “The Riverdale Avenue Crew (Lori, Don and our authors) are bringing a couple of trays of tea sandwiches carried by some extra footmen.”  Mary Ann Rivers brought a gorgeous, strong-calved, twinkle-eyed pedicab driver to take everyone on tours of the grounds while delivering flirty banter.  Nancy Naigle asked me, “I’m bringing miniature wedding cakes from Mac’s Bakery in Adams Grove. Pass these around, won’t you?”

Sabrina Jeffries brought a spread of delectable French cuisine for the party fare. Guests will have the opportunity to indulge in some delightful profiteroles, roast pigeon, flaky baguettes and the finest Bordeaux cognac. To finish the meal, un café to enjoy festivities late into the evening . . .  Sabrina Sol said, “To celebrate my erotic Regency series, I would love to bring a delightful spread of English Tea delicacies, including finger sandwiches, lemon curd cakes and clotted cream. And of course, Brandy for the gentlemen. Also, glittering bling for all.”  Our third Sabrina, Sabrina York has a couple of bottles of Cazadores Tequila, limes and salt shakers. Then everyone will have to take a shot every time someone says “Lady” or “Lord.”

Sarah Richmond is passing around amuse bouche, while Susan Jaymes has Butter Biscuits.   Tracey Devlyn says, “It’s time to really get this party in full swing–we’ve brought the wine! Upon arriving, we will have the servants decant several delicate white wines, a deep crimson bordeaux for the heart of the meal, and a delicious port to sip with dessert. Make sure the glasses are polished!”  Tracey Lyons brought a case of Zinfandel wine.  To finish things off Zelda Benjamin brought Gourmet hot chocolate.

Bottom Line:  Wondering how I can stay here at Downton Abbey and attend the SoCal Conference this weekend.

Rose’s Bookhouse: 50 Shades of Naughty

Barbara Vey -- December 3rd, 2012

T-shirt given away by Eliza Lloyd

Saturday night, Rose’s Bookhouse hosted a sold out booksigning that featured erotica authors.  Billed as Naughty & Nice II: 50 Shades of Naughty, it was obvious that this genre is the Twilight for adults.

Since I’m visiting in St. Louis, my daughter-in-law attended with me and it was her first booksigning event.  We came a half an hour early so I could meet with some of the authors before the event started and were amazed by the enormous line formed out the door.  It stretched past the building and into the parking lot.  This group was ready to do some serious book buying and meet their favorite authors.

Beth Kery Signing

Beth Kery Signing

I was thrilled to catch up with two readers who attended my Barbara Vey Reader Appreciation Luncheon in April.  I asked them how they heard about it since they live in St. Louis and I’m in Milwaukee.  They said an author linked to it on their website and they planned to come again next year because they had an amazing time.  It feels good to know people enjoyed it.

.

.

Then I asked readers what it was about the genre that put this event on their “to do” list.

Betty, 63:  “It’s like the taboo subject that’s now in the open and seeing so many others who enjoy the same thing I do.”

Sue, 25:  “I came with my friends for a girl’s night out and waiting in line together is half the fun.”

Mary, 38:  “My mom and I came.  She’s actually the one who gave me the 50 Shades of Grey book and I was shocked to get it from her, but now we laugh about it.”

Renee, 36:  “I like to read all kinds of books and since this is right in my own backyard, I wanted the chance to meet some authors.”

Michelle, 42:  “My girlfriend came last year and so we decided to make a night of it.  She even saw some people from last year.”

Sylvia Day getting to know her readers

Sylvia Day getting to know her readers

While all the authors (Shayla Black, Jaci Burton, Shiloh Walker, Beth Kery, Eliza Lloyd and Cassandra Gold) had sizable lines, Sylvia Day’s was by far the longest with the line forming all the way around the room.  This New York Times Bestselling author has her second book out in the Crossfire series, Reflected in You which debuted at #1 on the Times list and has her fans clamoring for the next one.

.

Bottom Line:  There was food, drink, friendships and great reads.  What more could you ask for in a night out?

5th Anniversary Bash: Contemporary, Historical, Erotica, E-Books, Audio

Barbara Vey -- March 9th, 2012

Today we are at Buckingham Palace and what an amazing place it is.  There are 775 rooms which include 19 State rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms.  My head spins to think about cleaning them.  If you love Downton Abbey, just imagine a spinoff of Buckingham Palace.  Oh, if those walls could only talk.

.

.

We’ve got lots of authors coming with things to get this party started.  Allie Boniface brought a beautiful centerpiece bouquets of English Tea Roses.  Hope Ramsay is coming with Ruby, who she calls the best hairdresser.  Jill Limber is in the spirit with a carriage pulled by four high-stepping greys, a platter of handcrafted chocolate truffles, carried by a handsome butler in livery, and a maid to help with hats and gloves.  Leigh Duncan and Nicole Jordan have  tiaras and fans for everyone.  Mari Carr is wearing her best fancy hat. What party at the palace is complete without a lovely, one-of-a-kind hat. Maybe one of these would do?

 .

And here comes the food.  Amy Ruttan is carrying in a five layer Mexican dip since she’s a sucker for the chips & dip.  (Not sure how often they serve that at Buckingham Palace.)  Rock Cakes are from Barbara Monajem.  Evangeline Holland went all out with quintessential Edwardian English treats–scones, spicy, Seville orange marmalade and luscious clotted cream, Victoria sponge; creamy slices of Stilton and cheddar cheese with juicy grapes, Pondicherry, cucumber, and marmite and watercress sandwiches, and of course, a pot of hot (but not to boiling) tea–China or India?

Grace Burrowes says she has popcorn, suitable for throwing (not sure what she means, but everyone parties differently).  Heather Snow will bring Herbed Vidalia Onion and Cheese Tea Sandwiches with Lemon Mayonnaise—made especially from a selection of healing herbs from her heroine’s own medicinal collection.  Monica Burns is visiting again today, and she’s bringing some of Bertie’s, the Prince of Wales, favorite foods.  For lunch there’s beef, Yorkshire pudding and roast lamb. At high tea we’ll have poached eggs, petit fours, rolls, scones, hot cakes, cold cakes, sweet cakes and shortcakes. Later this evening she’s hosting Bertie at a 12-course dinner. She promises you won’t go hungry.

.Kathryn Kennedy’s going to bring a tray of petite fours, layered with lots of icing, and decorated with pink roses. And to pass them around, she’ll bring along a handsome liveried footman in tight breeches. Very, very tight breeches.  Champagne, Pom, cashews, brie, baguettes & sliced mango are from K.T. Wells.  More champagne from Kelly Jamieson, but not just any kind, it’s a bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne.  Michelle Diener said,  “I’ll be bringing orange tarts, one of Henry VIII’s favorite dishes.”

The whipped cream and strawberries are compliments of Patti Shenberger.  Renee Bernard just wants to hang out and  serve high tea.  Shayla Black brought chocolate and some “Delicious” servers, while Tina Donahue is pouring champagne.  Victoria Janssen is carrying stacked boxes of chocolates from Philadelphia favorites John and Kira’s, Maron, and Eclat.  Laura Florand  says her heroes make the best chocolate in Paris (and, according to them, the world).   Their chocolate is definitely fit for royalty, but of course…is royalty good enough for them?

By Friday all the ladies (and gents?) should be a little tired. The Dark Haven Maven (Dark Haven Book Reviews) has arranged for the palace guard to give her a room not too far from the maddening throng of all the activity in the palace. The Maven has hired 20 male masseuses to give foot and back massages to those in need. After all the dancing, partying and general cavorting the last four days, the darlings are in need of some tender loving care. White wine spritzers and sparkling mineral water will be served along with light hors d’oeuvres of chilled shrimp, Joe’s Stone Crab Claws (flown in from the states) Foie de Volaille pate  Carr’s Water Crackers and assorted veggies and cheeses. The masseuses are not on the menu, my dears, but what they do on their own time is up to them…and you. Bon appetite! I’m off to get a look at the Crown Jewels.  :-)

 .

For entertainment, Georgie Lee said, “I’ll bring a troop of  scantily clad and well-oiled gladiators who will fight for our amusement. They won’t kill each other, because we don’t want to waste any beefcake. All gladiators will be available after each fight to pose for pictures with the guests.”   While Judith Glynn is bringing two classical guitar players from Spain.  Mina Khan says, “I’ll be bringing my male harem of sexy djinns/genies and they’ll be giving out wishes and dark chocolate kisses because Rukh O’Shay, is all about granting the heroine’s deepest desires and he tastes like dark chocolate too!”

RC Ryan is sending over some sexy cowboys, because everything is just plain better with cowboys!  (She does know we’re at Buckingham Palace, right?)  Here comes Robyn Carr with Jack from Jack’s Bar and his boys, all in Marine uniform, since service uniform is the accepted mode of dress in Buckingham Palace!  For the more boisterous party goers, Sabrina Jeffries will provide entertainment by way of a dangerous and daring chariot race!  Desiree Holt says “I’ll be arriving with Jackie Joyride, the inspiration for the book, the hottest bass guitar player around. We’ll have six bottles of wine, scented candles, chips and dip.”

.

And Ellora’s Cavemen cover models are here to dance for your pleasure, wearing tiny loincloths and big smiles.  For eye candy and delicious cuisine, Sophia Knightly is bringing along Argentine/Italian chef, Paolo Santo.

.

Elizabeth Hoyt wants us to look good in case we ruin into Will & Kate at the palace, so she is sending over gowns and shoes.  Marilyn Baron and Sharon Goldman are bringing “a sexy, shirtless edger to trim the grounds around Buckingham Palace (how’s that for decoration and entertainment?) and an ice cold pitcher of lemonade to cool us down. But watch out, we don’t want any more dead bodies turning up on the royal property. ”

Dawn Cartier is slinking in the corner and said, “Look! I found a bag full of royal jewels and I’m passing them out to everyone. (don’t ask where I found them) I think this diamond and ruby crown will look great on Barbara. I’m keeping the heart shaped diamond necklace. (shh) And I brought some chocolate filled King Cakes for the Royal Court too. They will be too busy eating to notice me sneaking out with this bag.”  Vicky Dreiling knows you can’t meet a queen without some bling, so she’s sending over jewelry to help us accessorize.  (Maybe that’s what Dawn found.)

Marcia James walked in with Homicide detective Zack Crawford, who will lead tours of the Buckingham Palace’s kennel for all those who want to see Queen Elizabeth’s Welsh Corgis.  There are several new litters of adorable puppies!  N.J. Walters is handing out mini tapestries to all the female guests. If you wish hard enough, maybe it will whisk you away to Javara and into the hands of a pair of hunky brothers.  (But we just got here to Buckingham Palace.)

And finally, Naomi Bellina offers, “What happens at Buckingham Palace stays at Buckingham Palace.”

Bottom Line:  Buckingham Palace will never be the same after this group gets done with it.

Here’s the rules.  Leave any comment and get an entry to win one of the fabulous prizes.  You can comment more than once for more chances.  Winners will be picked daily and posted on the blog March 12th.  Winners will have one week to claim their prize.

Erotic Romance Writer Outed

Barbara Vey -- May 5th, 2011
Judy Mays

Judy Mays

Last week the earth shattering news hit that high school teacher Judy Buranich writes erotica as Judy Mays.  Horrors!!  An English teacher who writes.  It’s almost embarrassing to read the news accounts of the outing.  A parent came forward because she felt erotica “is unethical, totally unacceptable. Period. It just sort of sickens and saddens me to know everybody’s sort of looking at this like, hey, this is OK.”  I hate to break it to you parent, but erotic is ok.  It’s not illegal.  Lots of people obviously like it because there’s definitely a market for it.  We even do book blurbs on them here.  So I contacted author Judy Mays and asked for her side of the story.

As some, maybe many of you know, I was recently “outed” in the school district where I teach by some disgruntled mothers who felt the content of my books made me unacceptable as a teacher.  They contacted one of the local news stations to which they revealed my identity as a writer of erotic romance.  It seemed to create quite a hullabaloo.  The television station did try to contact me.  I got an email at school somwhere around two or two-thirty in the afternoon.  It was very short outlining what the parents had reported to them and would I please contact them to give them my side of the story.  That was not something I was willing to do on the spur of the moment; and, before I could turn around, I was on the five o’clock news and then every half hour for the rest of the night.

How did I feel? I was shocked that it could happen so fast.  Then, I saw my book covers on a broadcast that would be seen by thousands of people, and the first thing that popped into my head was that I could not afford publicity like this.  No, I wasn’t upset.  I’ve been teaching thirty-three years and am, frankly, too old to get upset because I hadn’t done anything illegal.  I’ve been published for nine years, and never once did I bring my writing up in class.  I never talked about it.

However, the entire fiasco backfired on the parents who complained.  The support I have received from around the world has been unbelievable. Two complete strangers started a support page for me; and, the last time I checked, it had over 9000 “like” hits. However, it’s been the support from my current students, many, many former students, and their parents that has humbled me and warmed my heart.  I was always pretty sure I was respected, but the outpouring of support from “my kids” has brought tears to my eyes more than once.  They have rocked my world.

Also, the support of the romance community, both authors and readers, has been overwhelming.  So, I want to thank everyone who has joined me on this wild ride from the bottom of my heart.  You are all truly wonderful people.

And, not to worry. I am not going to lose my teaching job over this.

Oh, my books sales will probably go up too. <g>

Again, thank you all very, very much.

Thank you, Judy, for being so level headed at the outrageous behavior of a few uneducated parents.  And how delightful was it to see a former student post a video to YouTube praises Judy Buranich as a teacher and defending her rights to also be an author.  It’s very clever and a real tribute to someone who has been teaching for over 25 years.  You can watch it below.

Bottom Line: Yes, today is Cinco de Mayo…but most importantly it is my son’s birthday. Happy Birthday Keith!!

Party Castle

Party Castle

The mall was a blast, even with Justin Bieber there.  Just a couple of little skirmishes between Team Jacob and Team Edward, but other than that major eating and shopping going on.  The book stores were packed and there were so many happy, smiling people.  Today we venture to Europe to a wonderfully restored castle.  So many cool rooms to explore and the history of the place makes it perfect for the setting in any time period of a book.

Our cup runneth over today with eReader giveaways.  Our honorary guests who have kindly donated them are thrilled that they will be going to readers who really appreciate all they do.  Lori Foster with spring flowers to decorate for the party and lift everyone’s spirits,  The Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood who are bringing Cocktails and Homemade Ruby Slipper Sugar Cookies, Rosemary Harris, Louisa Edwards has made delicious party snacks,  Ellora’s Cave and the team of C.H. Admirand, Tara Nina,  and Anne Elizabeth.  Thank you ladies very much for the bestest, most wanted item ever!

M. J. Rose is going to start everything off with Champagne.  Nothing like a glass of the bubbly. Looks like Leslie Carroll is on the same page with her tiara and enough Cristal champagne for all!  Gwen Roman has crepes to go with her champagne.  But Shari Anton plans to bring several bottles of wine – Seven Deadly Zins (yes, a real wine and rather good).  Kelly Jamieson is carrying in  several bottles of one of her favorite wines, Menage à Trois to share with everyone!  Ann Lethbridge is bringing the rataflia while Tara Scott is a red wine woman.

Birds of Paradise bouquet

Birds of Paradise bouquet

,

Lisa Hendrix is lugging in a bowl of the very best mead (honey wine) and jewel encrusted cups from which to drink it.  Lynne Raye Harris says, “I’ll bring margaritas served by shirtless, brooding Harlequin Presents billionaires.” (Hopefully without their pregnant Italian mistress’ half-sister.)  Kate Rothwell says, “I brought Birds of paradise bouquet because they are so odd yet pretty. Also this cocktail, drop a sugar cube into a champagne glass, add a few drops of bitters then pour in the champagne You have a Champagne Cocktail I’m not crazy about this drink, but it was all the rage back in the day. You could add a bit of pureed white peach to champagne if you’d rather. Then I’ve given you the traditional fruit and flowers.”

Here’s Elizabeth Amber with Satyrs bearing Roman wine circa the 1880s–enough to heat up any stone-cold castle.  While Kimberly Killion is bringing a “Hawt Scot,” Christina Brook likes hot dukes in boots & buckets of rack punch. Cathy Maxwell says it’s all about, “The Cabana Boys!!!”

Jacquie Rogers has come with five rugged cowhands in chaps to serve hors d’oeuvres to the fair maidens of the castle.  They might look a bit out of place but these men will be accomplished at tipping their Stetsons to the ladies and drawling, “Howdy, ma’am.” (And just as accomplished at roping rattlers and wrestling grizzlies.)  The castle wenches are fighting over the men, but each of the five resists–holding out for their true lady loves.  Hors d’oeuvres include son-of-a-gun stew, sourdough biscuits, and vinegar pie, made special in brand spankin’ new cast iron Dutch ovens.  And they’re also serving homemade beer straight-up from the keg, but have been known to slosh a bit when serving maidens with ample cleavage.

Jade Lee brought ball gowns in a costuming corner but she’ll be wearing pirate clothing for Kit Frazier her pirate hero.  T.C. Archer has “A year’s supply of boob cream for anyone who can guess what omega radiation is.”  (I’m sure it’s something to do with a book, but I’m afraid to ask.)

For entertainment, Blythe Gifford is offering falcons, in case the party wants to indulge in a hunt.  But C.H. Admirand is strolling in with The Garahan brothers–dark-haired, dark-eyed, handsome cowboys from Pleasure, Texas: they will be on hand to help pass around the Mega-Margaritas and long-necked bottles of beer courtesy of the Lucky Star Ladies’ Club. Michelle Styles has taken over the ballroom and brought a chamber orchestra with a bevy of gorgeous hunks to dance with. As they are from a number of time periods, the men are adept at wide variety of dances –from the dances that scandalized the roman Republic to a variety of polkas and waltzes from the Victorian era.  Great minds think alike, so Lynna Banning is bringing dancing guys.

Jousting

Jousting

Tara Nina is thinking of other entertainment when she comes in with the gang from the Devilish Delights adult toy store, Shelley-the official product tester-and her tenacious cousin, Emma Jean-the store’s owner and samples of their favorite sex toys. Thinking more historically, Katherine Ashe says, “I will bring to the party a brave and handsome warrior upon a valiant steed. He will be available to any damsel in dire need, preferably in a romantic and dimly lit corner somewhere on the fringe of the festivities.”  Alana Jolie Abbott has an armload of lances for those sexy jousters she hired as entertainment.

Meanwhile, Anne Elizabeth is handing out Tia Stanton’s mighty meteorite hamburgers with all the fixings compliments of VIVANT, the paranormal store that is alive.  Also, in attendance are Witt – King of the Brinn – and his muscular friend Augustine and the wise, dynamic Yorinnce.  These gentlemen will be using their magical powers to make the attendees hover and fly.  Power up!  But for something a little tamer, Keri Ford has brought Apple Tea with basket full of Apple Muffins (and for those looking for a little kick, she has a bit of vanilla vodka, apple juice, cinnamon and cream. We can mix up some Apple Pie cocktails right here!)  Phoebe Conn is back to basics with guacamole and chips.

Robyn Carr came with the Preacher from Jack’s Bar, so he can whip up his favorite recipes for the ladies. Kris Kennedy is offering a tour guide for medieval Ireland. And Jeannie Lin has potstickers (one of her favorite foods in the world).  Susan Meier said, “I’ll bring the dragon.”

Sabrina Jefferies came with the Hellions of Halstead Hall, the notorioius Sharpe clan. Lord Jarret will bring several decks of cards and run a tournament for lords and ladies alike (but watch Jarret! He has quite the reputation for gambling!) He will also bring libations from the family’s brewery.

Fresh Fiction says, “Although a night in a castle sounds romantic, if you’re by yourself or just with the ghosts of loves past, you’ll need a book to curl up with under the down duvet (hey, those castles are notoriously DRAFTY). So Fresh Fiction is bringing a bag of six books to get you through the night. And they smell better than the ointment your sweetheart is using to soothe his muscles after a rough day of “defending the castle.”

To make everything pretty Jennifer Lewis has arrived with armfuls of tropical flowers to decorate the castle, a fountain flowing with killer rum cocktails and some coconut munchies.  Fiona Lowe has sunshine, golden sand, beach towels and pavlova for a virtual beach in a corner of the castle.  “I’m bringing several baskets of figs some rose-water cakes, and several golden thrones for us to sit upon,” says Stephanie Dray.  For that romantic mood, Diane Gaston has candles, in a beautiful silver candleabara, because a castle can’t have too many candles.

Always practical, Debbie Macomber is bringing camera, color printer and scrapbooking materials so everyone can preserve memories of the day–and the friendships they make in the castle!

Bottom Line: I’d watch out for Debbie Macomber and her camera…never know what may end up on Facebook.
