The Dolphin our Conference Hotel

The Dolphin our Conference Hotel

Finally made it to Orlando after an all day flight from San Diego and an hour plus delay in Atlanta when we were told our flight crew now had to fly to Boston, but we’d be getting someone else.  Then there was the thunder and lightening storm we flew through.  But once we landed, all was well.  Except for the fact that my one very small piece of luggage was the very last thing on the conveyor belt.  I was the last one there.  Very creepy and my good shoes were in that bag.  I was so worried that I even went up to a couple of people who had the same kind of luggage and gave them the once over.

Yes, I'm wearing a Tinkerbell shirt that says Barbara from friend, Robyn

Very hot, humid and muggy here with nighttime temps in the 90s.  Doesn’t matter.  Yesterday I was off to the Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM) with Joysann.  We got to take the boat across from our hotel and I didn’t even get sick (major motion sickness here).  Since it was Joysann’s first time, we hit everything.  Tower of Terror, Little Mermaid, Backlot Tour, Great Movie Ride, Narnia, Walt Disney Story, Beauty and the Beast and even had lunch at the Prime Time Cafe (meatloaf, just like mom used to make).  Sadly, the Toy Story 3 ride wasn’t working, so I’ll just have to come back another time.

Meanwhile, back at the hotel, authors began arriving by the busloads for the Romance Writers of America Conference.  Our sweaty, stinky selves were greeted by the Romance Bandits, the Petit Fours and Hot Tamales, Linda Howard, Linda Winstead Jones, Beverly Barton, Sharon Sala, Lori Handleland and more before we made it to our rooms.  After cleaning up, we had dinner at Shula’s.  Now, I’m not normally this slow, but until they put the real football menu on the table, I didn’t realize that this was owned by Don Shula.  Sure the football pictures all over the place should have given me a clue and I am in Florida, but still, I think too much sun during the day had something to do with it.

Called it a very early night because today is a very big day here.  First the library and booksellers event (that goes all day) and then the huge Literacy signing from 5:30-7:30 tonight with proceeds going to charity.  Over 500 authors will be participating.  It’s a free event, so come on down to support it.

Bottom Line: No Mickey sighting yet, although I did see Donald, Daisy, Pooh, Piglet, Buzz and Woody.

Dolphin Resort at Disney World

Moving with the speed of lightening, RWA announced yesterday that it was moving it’s annual conference from the flood devastated Nashville to Orlando, Florida, the Dolphin and Swan Resort.  While I feel horrible about the horror that Nashville has been through, I’m very impressed with how fast RWA has come through with moving their massive conference to a new location.

Being a former Disney Castmember, I cannot wait to get back to my old stomping grounds.  I admit it’s really going to be hard for me to stay at the hotel for the workshops and events.  With that in mind, I’ve come up with a a few suggestion that on how we can live the whole RWA experience in the parks.

Epcot

Librarian’s Day can be held at Epcot.  Between the World Showcase and Future World, the librarian’s should be in their glory with all the knowledge available.  Workshops will be at the Disney Hollywood Studios where authors can get on the American Idol Stage and sing their hearts out while teaching others the finer points of writing.   They can join the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular to show how to add action to their scenes.  The Rocking Roller Coaster is a must for thriller writers and The Tower of Terror for those who write about things that go bump in the night.

The Literacy Book Signing should be at the Magic Kingdom’s Hall of Presidents.  It’s like a sacred place that authors can be proud to sign their books while soaking in all that history. While at the Magic Kingdom, the editors and agents can hold their meetings on Dumbo, Peter Pan’s Flight and Buzz Lightyear.  Each meeting will last as long as it takes to ride the attraction.  It would distract the authors so they wouldn’t be nervous and get the editors/agents excited about what is presented to them since they are in the happiest place on earth.

Cinderella and Prince Charming

The Keynote Luncheon will be at Cinderella’s Happily Ever After Dinner at 1900 Park Fare, the Grand Floridian.  What better place to eat and meet with all those princesses who have achieved exactly what romance writers have been writing about…a happily ever after.

The parties should be held in the Animal Kingdom for obvious

Kilimanjaro Safari

reasons.   They can get a little wild.  Harlequin can start theirs off with the Kilimanjaro Safari to shuttle their guests to a secluded location for a wild night of dancing by firelight.   Wonder how many will end up in the Kali River Rapids?

Ok, it’s only a suggestion and maybe you have some of your own.  Let me know.

Bottom Line: I’ll be at the Bippity Boppity Boo Boutique having a proper princess make-over.
