Visiting RWA Chapters

Barbara Vey -- February 10th, 2014

Unknowingly, I seem to have started a journey to visit every RWA chapter around the country.  They invite me and I go, that easy.  This past weekend I spent with the talented writers of the Florida Romance Writers located in Ft. Lauderdale.  They are the group who’s known for their great winter conference held on a cruise ship.  You can get the details for next year’s Fun in the Sun cruise here.

There’s so much more to visiting these places than taking about the workshop I do.  I get to be up close and personal with lots of individual authors I might not have met otherwise.  Special props to Victoria Pinter and Demi Alex for putting up with me on the long ride to Ft. Lauderdale and Debby Grahl and her husband, Dave, for the ride back.  Let me tell you, you really get to know a lot about a person on a road trip.  Unfortunately, much of it is under a cone of silence, but from there strong bonds grow.

Friday night a large part of the group took me to dinner where we celebrated the news of new books being sold, writing accomplishments and Victoria’s upcoming wedding in June (not only does she have 5 books coming out this year, she’s also getting married).  She even brought her handsome fiance along.

I love this group because they always start off their meetings with a hearty breakfast at a local hotel.  No excuses for anyone to be sluggish this morning.  While most business meetings aren’t all that exciting, I especially enjoyed this one because the group voted to donate a spot on their conference cruise, January 2015, to the Brenda Novak Diabetes Auction.  So, if you are even considering going, here’s your chance to bid on it.  A wonderful gesture that I’d love to see more chapters follow by offering registration to their conferences on the Auction site.

Ahh...a captive audience

Ahh…a captive audience

I don’t mind sharing a little of myself with everyone so they can see I’m just a regular person and though it’s not easy to talk about agoraphobia, depression and anxiety, it warms my heart to receive quite a few emails after events when writers can confidentially admit that they suffer the same.  Many express the relief in knowing there are others out there, like them, and they are not alone.  Some tell me about friends and relatives they want to do more for.

I find the workshops I attend are not only about the craft, but a lot of times about the people.  We can learn so much from each other and with that understanding create wonderful things.  So I raise my glass to the wonderful writing groups I’ve talked with and many more I plan to meet in the future.  Keep the conversations going and you’ll all be successful.

Brenda Novak Auction For Diabetes

Barbara Vey -- May 1st, 2013

brenda_thad

The month of May not only brings flowers and the promise of spring, but also the Brenda Novak For The Cure of Diabetes Online Auction.  This auction has something for everyone and is for a wonderful cause.  According to the press release:

Every year, for the month of May, New York Times and USA Today Best-selling Author Brenda Novak runs an online auction for diabetes research. The auction takes a full year to plan and pull off, but it’s a labor of love—an effort to help all the people who, like her youngest son, suffer from diabetes.  Her very first auction ran in 2005. It started small but has grown every year by leaps and bounds.

The Brenda Novak Online Auction for Diabetes Research is the biggest online event for diabetes
research in the world. Each year, with the help of generous donors–which include some of the
biggest and brightest stars in publishing, like Nicholas Sparks, Nora Roberts, Diana Gabaldon, Steve Berry and Janet Evanovich–Brenda offers up over 2000 fabulous items, creating a shopper’s paradise. As a cumulative total, she’s raised $1,675,280.

But the auction is more than your everyday charity gala. It’s a blast to participate in–
a real community. They do drawings and give away prizes. Shoppers quickly become donors and donors quickly become shoppers. It’s an outstanding fundraising model!

Here’s to making a difference…

When asked what makes her auction model work so well, Brenda said, “I think it’s the unique items that are offered, as well as the community. At the auction, readers can bid to win unique experiences–like having lunch or dinner with their favorite author, or staying in their favorite author’s guest house, or reading their favorite author’s book before it’s ever even published. We also offer opportunities to aspiring writers of all genres–and millions of people want to write a book. Some of the most powerful agents and editors in publishing have donated their time to read submissions and give feedback, some with a turn-around time of twenty-four hours! In addition to these unique items, we have everything from trips & stays, to antique jewelry to celebrity items.  Also, the friendships we form, the prizes we give away, and the spirit of fighting back together brings us closer as a community each year. I’m not the only one driving this. We’re all in it together.”

Some unique items include tickets and backstage meet and greet packages with Bret Michaels and Celine Dion, a stay at Nora Roberts Inn, an African safari and hot air balloon ride.  But there’s also jewelry, lunches, trips, and stays in author’s guest houses.  And you just won’t believe all the books offered.  This is a book lovers fantasy shopping trip.

My offerings this year are a day to be featured on my Beyond Her Book blog, a ticket and hotel stay for the Barbara Vey Reader Appreciation Luncheon 2014 and a complete makeover at a premiere salon in Wisconsin.  You can bid on these items here. Just search Barbara Vey.

No donations are too big or too small, so check it out and bid often.  You’d be surprised what you can get and do some gift shopping while your at it.  Spending money on fun things is easy when you know it’s going for a good cause.

There are items like a week in Scotland or Dublin, a chance to meet Celine Dion, lunch with your favorite author, jewelry, becoming a character in a book, e-readers, evaluations and critiques for authors, special items for readers and many autographed books.  Of course, the list goes on.  Take your time  perusing the site and bid often.

Since I don’t have guest bloggers on Beyond Her Book, I give away 24 hours of blogging to include pictures and video (to be approved by me of course).  Feel free to bid on this and I’ll even help you put it together.  You can pick the date as long as it’s not during a conference I’m attending or my anniversary week in March.  Otherwise, you can use it to launch your book, your website or your brand.  All for a good cause.  Here’s the link to the auction.

This year I am also offering a seat at my Barbara Vey Reader Appreciation Luncheon to be held Saturday, April 27, 2013 in Milwaukee.  The lucky winner will sit at keynote speaker James Rollins‘ table, get a package of 4 autographed books from him and one night hotel stay at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Milwaukee for the event.  See the details here.

Plus, I’m also donated an autographed book of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Family Caregivers that contains my story about my mom.  Details here.

So, please check it out and I guarantee you will find something for yourself or someone you care about.

Bottom Line:  I’ve got my eye on that trip to Scotland, so don’t overbid me.

Brenda Novak’s Auction for Diabetes

Barbara Vey -- May 3rd, 2011

It’s that time of year again.  Every May Brenda Novak puts on the spectacular Auction for Diabetes that started as a fund raiser for her son’s juvenile diabetes,  everyone in the publishing industry seems to get involved and now it’s spreading outside the community.  As for my part, since I don’t have guest bloggers all year here, I offer up Beyond Her Book to one lucky bidder.  They have 24 hours to post whatever they’d like on the blog, including pictures and video.  Brenda was kind enough to share just a taste of the wonderfully amazing items up for bid.

Brenda and her son, Thad

This is the seventh year that I’ve been raising money for diabetes research. The event might be named Brenda Novak’s Online Auction, but I don’t really feel as if it’s MINE anymore. Because of the tremendous outpouring of support I’ve received from the romance community, the auction has become OURS. It’s only successful because of the people who come together to make it happen, and I’m so grateful to every single person who contributes on either end (donating or bidding). Our very first day we raised a whopping $42,000!!!

Celine Dion Package

Celine Dion Package

This year we have bigger and better items than ever before. We have some razzle- dazzle in the way of Celine Dion tickets WITH A MEET & GREET and an invitation for four to the taping of the new hit TV show, THE BIG BANG THEORY. There’s an $8500 18k white gold tanzanite/diamond ring that looks just like Kate Middleton’s engagement ring and an exclusive Kate Middleton dress. There are quilts created by professional quilters and bestselling authors, trips & stays, including a weekend in Susan Wiggs guest house on Bainbridge Island or a whole week in Cherry Adair’s guest house on the lake. And that’s before I get to the whole category of antique jewelry donated by Dianne Drake or all the Coach purses donated by Anna DeStefano.

Sherrilyn Kenyon, Dianna Love & Mary Buckham always sign up for a category that has fabulous items, KM Daughters always donate some very cool electronic item (this year it’s the iPad 2) and there’re even more business opportunities for aspiring writers—we have over 120 evaluations by some of the most influential agents and editors in publisher as well as author mentorships and critiques and publicity opportunities for those who are already published. With 2000 items, we’re bound to have something for everyone and every budget. This is a fabulous way to help the 26 million people who suffer from this terrible disease.

They’ll be selling on the auction as commemorative items for those who have supported it all these years—and they will also be featured on Gilt.com May 3 – May 10th.

Jane Porter: Even Writers Get Author Crushes

Barbara Vey -- August 17th, 2010
Jane and the Harlequin Presents authors and editors at lunch in Orlando

Jane and the Harlequin Presents authors and editors at lunch in Orlando

Today we have a special guest, author Jane Porter.  Jane won a day on Beyond Her Book blog by being the highest bidder on Brenda Novak’s Diabetes Auction.  Congratulations Jane and thanks for contributing to such a great cause.

.

Romance Writers of America’s Conference is always such an amazing five days. They remind me of the Harlequin Presents I write– intense, complex, demanding, exciting, and sometimes plain overwhelming. For published authors, the conference is big business as you meet with your agent, editor(s), publicists, sales department, and other publisher execs. You have book signings and lunches, teas and dinners, receptions and champagne parties. You wake up early and fall into bed long after midnight. You crave coffee and sleep, food and Tylenol and sometimes just a half hour of peace.

But the annual conference is also so much more than business. It’s the one time you get days to connect with the writer friends that save your sanity again and again through the year. My writer friends are my real friends because they know the real me—the one that pulls out my hair in fistfuls when a book doesn’t work or when I despair that I’ll never find a good idea or write another decent book again. My writer friends are a huge part of my heart, and the anchors in a topsy-turvy world.
.
When I’m with my close friends at conference we do talk business. We also talk about our books, our contracts, and juicy industry gossip. But we also laugh and cut loose and for a short period of time feel like people instead of writing machines. It’s with my close writer friends that I get to gush about my favorite authors. You know those authors you just love love love to read.

In Orlando this year I got to meet one of my new ‘crushes’, the brilliant Claudia Dain. I discovered Claudia Dain through one of my best buds, writer Megan Crane (also writing as Caitlin Crews). Megan knows my taste and insisted I read The Courtesan’s Daughter, the first book in Claudia Dane’s incredible series, The Courtesan Chronicles. Megan was right to send me Claudia’s book. I LOVED it. Within twenty pages I was hooked, completely. Claudia Dain is brilliant. She’s not like any other author writing today and after rushing through her series, I wrote her a fan letter. She wrote me back. I wrote her again. She answered. And then I asked her out. (No, not really.) But I did ask if she wanted to meet for coffee at conference. Claudia said yes. (Cue joyful music.) I was ecstatic.

Claudia Dain

Megan and I ended up meeting Claudia together and that 90 minute coffee remains one of the highlights from my trip. It was such a thrill to meet someone that has brought me such pleasure. I haven’t written a lot of fan letters—I think Christine Feehan, Mary Balogh and Loretta Chase are the only other three I’ve gushed to, although I’d like to send JR Ward one because I really do adore her books)—so conference is also my chance to be a reader and fan. After all, where else do you find a thousand of the most talented fiction authors gathered in the same building for five whole days?
.

Next year’s conference is in New York and I’ve already marked the week off in my 2011 calendar. Attending conference may be exhausting and overwhelming, but its also one of the most wonderful things I get to do, and one of the best parts about being Jane Porter.

.
If you had the chance to play fan girl, which author would you love to meet? Tell me who you is top of your list and you’ll have the chance to win one of 3 special Texas themed giveaways featuring my new 5 Spot trade fiction release, SHE’S GONE COUNTRY.

/

Jane Porter, the mother of three sons, makes her home in Bellevue, WA and is the bestselling author of over 30 novels–6 trade fiction for Grand Central Publishing’s 5 Spot line and 25 Harlequin Presents.  One of Jane’s novels, Flirting with Forty, was made into a 2008 Lifetime movie starring Heather Locklear.  For more on Jane and her new book tour schedule visit her here. You can also follow Jane on her fan page, Facebook and Twitter.

/

Bottom Line: Jane, I am also a “total fan girl” at RWA and I’d like to meet Joanna Bourne (loved The Spymaster’s Lady).
