Welcome to day 2 of the 6th Anniversary Bash here at Beyond Her Book. Today we celebrate more of my favorite genres. I cut my teeth on Agatha Christie, Robert Ludlum, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Erle Stanley Gardner and Ian Fleming. Our party takes place at the Bates Motel. I remember the first time I saw Psycho. I was just a kid, but it scared the crap out of me. I didn’t take showers until I was well into adulthood, only baths. Even now I find myself looking through the shower curtain with flashbacks to my childhood. That’s the sign of a great thriller that stays with you.
Adelle Laudan is passing out Strawberry jello with peach schnapps shooters. Ann Stratton decided to go with a Mexican theme although I’m not sure what Tequila, Margaritas, tacos, quesodillas, chips, hot sauce, and sombreros have to do with the Bates Motel. Kim Hornsby says, “I will bring a frosty jug of Blue Hawaii’s along with taro chips and Maui onion dip. I’m also bringing a male hula dancer to give hip swiveling lessons.” Lisa Mondello has some fine Italian food from Providence along with Heroes of Providence, those sexy Police Officers and Fire Fighters to protect and serve. This day has sure got a lot of international flavors.
Brad Parks says, “In honor of Barbara’s passion for the Milwaukee Brewers, I’m bring bratwurst and a selection of beers by Leinenkugel. Game on!” I’m all about the brats and I hope he brought some sauerkraut to put on them. Tonya Kappes told me, “I’ll bring Skyline Chili dip and chips! It’s a local favorite and I’d love to add a little spice to the party!”
Nancy Naigle has done her homework and says, “Since The Bates Hotel has been doing some upgrades. I’m bringing the new fluffy bathrobes and slippers — crimson red. One for everyone who checks in.” I just saw S. Froetschel with a strange mixture of cupcakes, candles and mace. Tina Wainscott said, “Aside from a really good lock for my room, I’ll bring Kill Me Now shots (these are usually served at closing time when the lights come up).”
While a lot of the authors are all about the food, D.V. Berkom has just walked in with a dead body. Not good. E.K. Prescott said, “I am bringing Sherlock Holmes. I have read all of Conan Doyle’s stories about this famous literary detective. Thus he has a part in every book. One of the main characters Detective Professor Richard Wikki receives a replica of Sherlock’s pipe from his mentor upon graduation from Cambridge University in England. And the third book in this series murder mystery will align with Doyle’s short story printed by Strand Magazine in 1923.” Elizabeth Delisi has just found a card from the “Fatal Fortune Tarot,” to help solve the mystery. Erick D. Burgess is bringing his good friend Batman — a perfect partner for solving crimes and delivering justice.
Sally Eggert brought sangría in an ominous shade of blood red, some snazzy popcorn seasoned with roasted garlic and olive oil, and one of my favorite romantic, suspenseful films of all time, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” complete with spine-tingling mood music composed by the great Bernard Herrmann! Sharon Hamilton walked in with a freaky mobile DJ who plays Oldies.
Dianna Love’s Slye Temp agents have set up a huge cabana next to Bates Motel where they’re giving massages. Josh is behind the bar mixing apple martinis. Here comes Ryder with lattes and a smile. Nick and Dingo are setting up the chocolate fountain and looking scrumptious all on their own. To die for activities at the Bates Motel. L.J. Charles is bringing on the bling with Mardi gras beads…lots of them.
Bottom Line: I thought the cemetery was bad yesterday, but this Bates Motel is the thing that nightmares are made of.
