Funny how everyone in the industry is so eager to get their piece of the erotic fiction market these days! A publisher reached out to my RWA chapter to ask if they could attend our meeting to learn about “finding the next 50 Shades of Grey.” We laughed at that one (and also honored their request–not sure that anyone will cash in like Random House did). I’m glad that long-time writers of the genre are finding more recongition from the 50 Shades phenom–hopefully it will bring attention to quality books in the process, like Tiffany Riesz’ Siren or Roni Loren’s Crash Into You.

Erotic fiction has been incorporated into the historical genre for years. In our part of the world there is nothing new about it. I’ve been called “Lust’s Leading Lady” for over 30 years. I’ve also written erotic fantasy, and a contemporary series that incorporated wrotica heavily. E.L. James is simply lucky to have her pure sex story made such a big deal of, and exploited. Lucky her, but she didn’t
start anything new, and I for one am sick unto death of hearing how “new” eroticcl is in woman’s fiction. . Bah! Humbug! It’s time the American authors spoke up, and stopped being so polite about this English upstart.

Here, here! Especially when so many better writers go unnoticed by mainstream media (and publishers). Of course they seem shocked–shocked!–that women like to read about sex (explicit or not). Silly, isn’t it.

Erotic romance in all it’s shapes and forms has been around for a long time. Only now is it becoming a more accepted genre to the general public at large. I think it’s all to do with timing. The market wasn’t ready for such explicit work to be in the public forum. There is also serendipity. Being in the right place at the right time. E L James just happened to be the one to be plucked out of obscurity, making erotic romance mainstream. Good on her. It’s about time.
