Talk Like a Pirate Day Books

Barbara Vey -- September 20th, 2012

Yesterday was Talk Like a Pirate Day.  I tried it, but without an eye patch, peg leg and parrot on my shoulder, people were kind of looking at me funny.  I’ll try to be more prepared for next year.

I’ve always loved books about pirates and am still nagging Jennifer Ashley about writing more since becoming enamored with her The Care and Feeding of Pirates and The Pirate Next Door.  There’s something so dashing about a romance pirate.  Their tight pants and loose, open to the navel billowy shirts.  A tough exterior, but heart of gold when it comes to finding their soul mates (insert sigh here).

One thing I did go was ask people on Twitter and Facebook to suggest some good pirate books for me to read.  Here’s what they like:

Leigh EvansWindflower by Sharron & Tom Curtis. Best. Pirate. Historical. Romance. EVER.

Bekka Black - Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson!

Dana Cameron – I like Under the Black Flag by David Cordingly. (Nonfiction)’

Michael McGovern – If you feel like a movie, try going with an old-school Errol Flynn pirate movie like Captain Blood or The Sea Hawk! Might be a good way to cap off a day of pirate reading, and Flynn is one dashing chap to spend an evening with.

Caitlyn Willows – Anything from Darlene Marshall

Missy JaneSay You’re Mine by Judi McCoy

Lisa Dunick Lady Pirate by Katherine Ashe

Patti O’SheaThe Skypirate by Justine Davis. Futuristic pirate and awesome story.

Nina BruhnsGhost of a Chance by Nina Bruhns

Julie Ann Long - I Kissed an Earl by Julie Ann Long

Sheila Griffin LlanasThe True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi

Josephine Ault TempletonA Pirate’s Kiss by Josephine Templeton

Sabrina Shields - Check out The Kraken’s Caribbean Series from Maureen O. Betita!

Got a pirate book you like?  Post it below.

Bottom Line:  Thanks for all the suggestions.  They’ll be going on my list of books to check out because every now and then I need a pirate fix.

Top 10 reasons to raise your children as pirates

    (10) Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to be a pirate, and he’ll steal other people’s fish for a lifetime.

    (9) Divvying up booty is good quality time with the kids.

    (8) When other parents hear you’re raising your children as pirates, they’ll stop asking you to volunteer at school.

    (7) It’s fun to watch the emergency room doctor’s reaction when you say your son was injured during “a little mishap boarding a merchant vessel that refused to surrender.”

    (6) You’ve always preferred the title “Captain” to “Mommy” or “Daddy.”

    (5) You can spend your kids’ college savings on more important things, like a trip to Las Vegas.

    (4) Your children already smell like pirates, so the transition will be easy.

    (3) The family that plunders together, stays together!

    (2) Replacing “family movie night” with “family terrorizing the neighbors with cannons night” is a wonderful change of pace.

    (1) Cap’n Billy wants you to do it—and the last person who didn’t do what Cap’n Billy asked was set adrift in a rowboat with only a day’s supply of water.

I love a good pirate tale. Errol Flynn was one of the best in Captain Blood. I’ve read more than my share of pirate stories and I still go back for more. Arrrgh!

In a piratical bit of self-promotion–’cause that’s what book buccaneers must do, me hearties–I’ll mention me children’s picture book “Pirate vs. Pirate” (Disney Hyperion), about Bad Bart and Mean Mo and their contest to determine who be the swashbuckliest pirate on the seventh seas … which ends, not exactly with hearts and flowers but the pirate equivalent :) (‘Tis a love story for me hubby, a true treasure of a guy.)
