At RWA there are several awards given that aren’t for writing books. I know because I received one. In a luncheon award ceremony, the Romance Writers of America also presented awards to a librarian, bookseller, and several service awards.
While it feels kind of funny to toot my own horn, I can’t not mention that I was privileged to receive the Vivian Stephens Industry Award. This award is given to “one or more professionals in the romance-publishing industry, who is not a writer, who has contributed to the genre or to RWA in a significant and/or continuing manner.” It gives me goosebumps to think that they mean me. It’s a very humbling experience to be honored in this way by an organization I have so much respect for. For those of you who may have missed it, my acceptance speech is right here.

Barbara, congratulations on your award. What a fabulous acceptance speech! It was such a pleasure meeting you at the book signing and quite a wonderful week altogether.
Oh I am so glad you put up your speech. I was so hoping you would as I have wanted to hear it ever since I learnt that you had won the award. I knew I wasn’t going to be at the RWA this year but was silently cheering on the good sense the RWA had to give you this well deserved award. Thank you for all you do to promote the genre and allow people to live vicariously.
And a huge congratulations to all the other award winners.
Terrific speech, Barbara. Wish I could have been there. Congratulations!
CONGRATS to YOU and to all the winners! How wonderful!
Congratulatons, Barbara! As some one who has been in the busness since the very begining, that’s the 1970s for those of you who don’t know; and knew Vivian Stephens, it is well deserved. You do those of us who publish, and who write a great service with your column. Thank you!
You definitely deserve the award. Your blog here is partly how I started reading more romance-centered books and how initially found out about RWA (which I joined this year). I really never expected to join up with romance writers, but I love how diverse RWA members are — and how smart! I’ve met wonderful women through it (and my chapter has one guy!).
Applause! Applause! Congrats, Barbara! Nice speech, too
.
Barbara–You truly deserved your award. You have been a major supporter of the genre for years and we treasure you. And thanks so much for mentioning the rest of us–what a pleasant surprise, and greatly appreciated!
