Last night was Girl’s Night Out. I went with my sisters and nieces to see Channing Tatum shake his stuff in Magic Mike. He did not disappoint.
,
The story is about Mike, a workaholic who works construction, auto detailing and, by the way, is also a stripper. But that’s not all. He does it all to save enough money to do what he really wants which is to make custom furniture from stuff he finds laying around. Mike meets “The Kid” at his construction job and brings him into the world of strippers.
.
There is a romance trying to bud, but it needs more sunshine and water. The story is pretty weak, but the dance numbers more than make up for. Matthew McConaughey is at his finest as the kind of slimy, sleazy strip club owner who’s voice could melt butter.
.
The theater was filled with women anxious to have a good time. Most came in groups of 6 or more and the mood was kind of like going out for a bachelorette party. From my point of view, they could have done without the talking all together and just did the dance numbers. There were quite a few funny moments and as my sister said, “It was cheaper than going to a strip club.”
.
After I got home, I started to wonder if this could be a book. Not so much. This was a very visual experience that I couldn’t think words could justify. The screenplay must have read something like, “Blah, blah, blah.” Magic Mike gyrates takes his clothes off.
.
Bottom Line: Fun movie to see with your women friends…and a couple of bottles of wine wouldn’t hurt either.

I gave the movie two thumbs up. It was like a girls night out and I enjoyed every minute.
I do think it could be a book. The BDSM genre makes it work. So with a lot of research I think this could be a great book..,
I guess I was thinking that the book couldn’t do the dancing justice.
It would have to be extremely well written to compensate for for the lack of visuals. But with pictures, maybe a few pop ups? I think I’m on to something.
LOL, love the pop ups idea!
I loved watching Channig dance and do his thing, the Kid was cute too, but not interested in the others, lol
Tatum Channing dancing was worth the price of admission. I did think Tarzan was funny.
I enjoyed it too! This movie won’t win an Oscar but for $20 I had a fun night out! I loved that the theatre was packed with women of all ages. I saw a group of 4 older women come in & they all had walkers. Yes it was a fun night out for ALL women!
The women certainly bonded over this movie and the walker ladies were delightful! That’s how I want to be in 20 years…well, maybe 30 years.
I’m with with you on the dialogue. Pretty sure the directors told the actors to just make it up as you go along. Pretty weak, but no one was there for the storyline and they probably knew that.
Matthew stole the show. Amazingly good acting. Fully believable as a sleaze.
As for making it as a book..aside for the lack of visual… the story was too shallow, but with some work, and digging a little deeper into the characters it might make a difference. And you know me. I’m all about books that make a difference.
I’m waiting for you to turn this movie into a book.
There was too much plot. It got in the way of the dancing.
Our audience was so rowdy, there were times I couldn’t hear what they were saying because they were cheering and hollering like they were in the club, too. Very interactive movie. I could’ve done without all the drug stuff. The romance was muddled and confused by the other woman in the picture. But in the end, I really didn’t care. I just liked watching the guys dance.
LOL, I am so with you on this one Andrea. Some parts were like, “There’s a hole here in the movie between the dancing…let’s throw in some drugs or sex or a car.”
Hmmm… My friends and I (4-6 of us) are going to see it on Thursday. The only showing we could coordinate going to is marked on the website schedule as “Open-Captioning”. Sounds like that may be a good thing, what with cheering and hollering and not wanting to miss important dialogue. Should imbibing happen before or after watching the movie?
I think you should imbibe before, during and after. You’ll definitely feel like part of the movie.
I haven’t seen Magic Mike yet, but I’m definitely looking forward to it. I went to a Chippendales’ knock-off show in the 1980s and the guys definitely did not look anything like Tatum Channing, unfortunately. ;-(

I’m not sure there is anything out there quite like this movie. Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe I need to do more research.
“Matthew McConaughey is at his finest as the kind of slimy, sleazy strip club owner ”
It’s the role he was born to play! haha
This looks like a fun movie for a bunch of girlfriends. I’m not much for the muscly stripper type guys, but I actually heard decent reviews of this movie. Who ever knew Stephen Soderberg would go this route with one of his films?
When Matthew pulled out his bongo drum…it was all over for me.
Thanks for the review. I’m thinking going to see it at the drive in might make it ever better.
If you go to the drive-in you need a convertible and your rowdiest girlfriends.
That sounds like a great idea.
Love the dancing and the man candy – the story had no plot and it was a disappointment. It could be strengthened if well written and adjust but without the visual hotness not sure if I’d pick it up…well unless Joe Manganiello was on the cover of the book.
Definitely a great girls night out movie!
I don’t have a theatre nearby. I might just have to stare at the photo of Dallas above for a couple hours and be happy with it until it hits cable.
I could look at McConnaughey all day! Yum!! For him…I might be persuaded to camp. Okay, not really, but I’d think about it.
Thanks for the update, Barbara. Sounds like you and the girls had a great time. We all need that kind of fun more often than we get it.

US Weekly reported that around this time Tatum began working as a stripper at a local nightclub, under the name “Chan Crawford.” In 2010, he told an Australian newspaper that he would like to make a movie about his experiences as a stripper..
