RomCon is truly a reader’s weekend. There are no agents, editors or publishers. Just authors and their adoring fans.
I attended a few intimate chats which are held in a room with one author and a limited number of readers. There are no rules, so you can talk about anything you want. Linda Conrad surprised her readers at 9 a.m. with chocolate parfaits. —– took us through the legal system in England since she sat in on several tries. Her assessment, boring. I was scheduled with Holly Jacobs, but since she missed the event, the readers decided to stay and have our own discussion. It was actually quite nice and it’s always fun to talk with like minded people.

.
There was a trivia contest with Jade Lee and Elizabeth Hoyt. The contest was terrific, but somehow I think the readers appreciated the gentleman adorned with only a kilt. He passed out the prizes, so, needless to say, everyone wanted to win.
.
.
.
Julia Quinn had Bridgerton croquette set up in a room and the wickets were adorable stuck in paper cups to hold them up. I kept having flashbacks to Alice in Wonderland and expected the mallets to be made from flamingos.
.
There was Madlibs in one room, romance, and erotica panels in other rooms. There was another Titanic Tea for those who didn’t get in the day before.
.
.
.
I attended an intimate lunch with Kat Martin who told us that she met her hubby when they were both real estate agents. The author at my dinner table was Alexandra Ivy who writes paranormal.
.
Just a few of the authors from the book signing.

I met Kate Duncan who is a cover model on many romance covers. She said she’s been on over 200 covers and currently has two pictures in Vogue Italia. She’s from the St. Louis area and is just adorable. I’ll be looking at the covers more closely now that I know what she looks like.

The big event everyone was waiting for started at 9 p.m. and was called Chocolate Mangasm. It was sponsored by author Delilah Marvelle and Kim Killion of Hot Damn Designs. It was billed as a giant bachelorette party and definitely fulfilled it’s promise. Everyone was given a bag of goodies when they arrived labeled “Vixen” or “Slut.” I was a slut (no comments please). We were divided into several groups that rotated throughout the night. Each group was a different “naughty” game to include dress the blow up male doll (anatomically correct), a form of musical chairs where a slippery part of the male body was passed frantically around a circle while the participant’s hands were lotioned up and a kind of scavenger hunt where you had to do several things listed on your paper to name a few. The room was extremely loud with many squeals of delight. Male models were there to have their pictures taken and lots of prizes given out. Seeing how tired everyone was the next morning is a testament to the success of the party.
.
Sunday morning was pretty quiet with readers gather to talk about what they enjoyed about the conference and to talk about books. There was a brunch and I was honored to be asked to speak. Then it was time for the awards.

Bottom Line: Readers make the world go round.

Barbara, It sounds like you had fun! I’m so sorry that I wasn’t there to see you. And I’m really sorry they still had me scheduled for things. I let them know ages ago that I wouldn’t be there. I really feel bad about that!
Holly
Holly, I was so sorry to miss you but I told all the readers how cool you are.
Barbara, Thanks for that, but I’m still sorry! Not only that I had people looking for me, but sorry to have missed you! I still think of you, every time I think of NYC!!
It was a super fun weekend. I love hanging out with readers and meeting new friends. It was great to meet you in person, Barbara!
It was so lovely to meet you, Barbara! Your speech left me in tears at the brunch yesterday. Thanks for helping to make RomCon2012 such a success! CJ Snyder
Thanks CJ, that’s very kind of you.
I’m one of the readers that attened and it was a blast. Thank you Barbara for the great write up and pictures! You also stopped in our Blog and reviewer group and we loved your story about Sherrilyn Kenyon. It was a pleasure to meet you.
Thanks Janon, the bloggers group was great. I love that everyone is so passionate about what they do.
I wish I could have gone, maybe next year. It sounds like a great conference.
There was definitely fun to be had by all! So glad we were able to meet at the brunch, as we were both too busy having fun at the Chocolate Mangasm to stop and chat! Jennifer Zane
It all sounds like great fun. I’m already making plans for next year. Thanks for the great report.
Hi Barbara! I was there, and it was amazing. The Titanic Tea party and the Intimate chats are the best. I love, love, love Alexandra Ivy and meeting her in person was awesome. I can’t wait until next year.
Thanks for the great blog. I had a lot of fun and I hope you all did too. It was a pleasure to meet you and I hope to see you at RomCon again next year.
Congratulations to the amazing books that won the Readers’ Crown this year. I’ve added all of the books I haven’t read to the TBR pile!
And, last but not least, I want to thank all the authors who put in their time and effort to create such fun events and to entertain everyone at RomCon. You were all exceptional. It truly was a fun, laughter-filled, fantastic weekend and I very much look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
Romcon was a blast from beginning to end. The Titanic Tea Party was my favorite. DeeAnne Gist put on the elaborate party on both Friday and Saturday. There wasn’t anything I went to that wasn’t amazingly fun. I was in a chat with Julia Quinn. It’s always nice to find out that your favorite author is so sweet. Julia is a gem.
Barbara, thank you for coming to Romcon, you made me cry with your speech it was so touching.
Thanks Cynthia, I was honored to ask to speak to my favorite people…readers.
Looks like a cool event! I hadn’t heard of this until a writer friend mentioned it recently. I love how many reader events are out there
What Fun!!! Is this conference in Denver every year?? Colorado is on my bucket list, ya know. It sounds like this is one conference I need to add to my 2013 wish list, although I’ll admit as I read about the Mangasm event I blurted out, “Lordy Goodness!” hahaah. That sounded kind of wild. I’d have been a giggling mess. But that’s always fun, too.
Thanks for the update and awesome pics!
Hugs and happy reading~
Nancy
A colleague of mine went and said it’s always in Denver, while Romantic Times moves to a different city each year. Her experience said while the Denver experience was nice that it was smaller and allowed for more interaction and less waiting in line, RT is incomparable and extremely well-organized. The next RT is in Kansas City next spring!
Looks like it was a fun weekend!
Barbara, you forgot to mention that Jade SIGNED THE MODEL’S CHEST (because she’s Jade.)
Loved seeing you this last weekend–despite the water incident!
xxoo,
Elizabeth
Oh, I forgot to post that picture. I’ll put it on Facebook. So here’s my public apology for knocking over a glass of water on Elizabeth’s books at her book signing. Oops.
Sorry I missed the chest signing. I must have been in the bathroom.
Barbara — it was an awesome event, and I loved your speech! And as for Elizabeth Hoyt, I should say that ANYONE could sign the model’s chest. I was just the only one with a pen that worked on his massive pectoral! Three cheers for being prepared!
Looks like a great author/reader weekend. So glad everyone had a chance to enjoy the weekend and hope those living in Colorado were not affected by the fires. Very scary.
