James Bond Will Open the Summer Olympics

Barbara Vey -- April 2nd, 2012

James Bond will open the Summer Olympics in London by special invitation of the queen.  Apparently, a short film is being made to be played at the opening of the games which will have James Bond (Daniel Craig) receive orders from the queen to parachute into Olympic Stadium by helicopter.

Scenes were filmed inside the queen’s most private quarters.  I’m excited not only to get an inside peek into her domain, but I’m always up for a little more Daniel Craig in my life.

Then I started thinking, why stop there.  If they are looking for iconic literary figures, they should find a way to add even more of them.  Harry Potter could fight a dragon, which may end up an Olympic event someday.  Sherlock Holmes showed he could box in the movie, so he’d be up for an event.  Which would mean that Robert Downey, Jr. could make an appearance.  Oliver Twist and his pals could be working the crowd and the ultimate British party girl herself, Bridget Jones would bring even more pizazz and maybe even start a smoking and drinking competition.

I love the Olympics and can’t wait for them to start.  I’m always glued to my television for the opening ceremonies.  They’re thrilling and emotional and always get me pumped for the coming events.  I hope the organizers are reading this and maybe take a couple of my ideas.

What London literary characters would you like to see at the Opening Ceremonies?

Bottom Line:  Although Dr. Who isn’t a literary character, I’d love to see the Tardis land at the Olympic Stadium.

Peter Rabbit might hop in from the Lake District, although he’d risk being cooked into a pie. And I would love it if James Bond would parachute into the stadium while clutching Winnie-the-Pooh. (smile)

You are too funny. I do love me some James Bond. I wouldn’t mind seeing Dr. Jeykell. Mr. Hyde needs to stay home and watch on TV. Any of Shakespeare’s characters would make it exciting. I look forward to enjoying the Olympics also.

For a moment there, I completely forgot Daniel Craig is James Bond. I was all excited about seeing my favorite Bond, James Bond (couldn’t help it) Mr. Pierce Brosnan. That black hair with a little gray at the temples when he allows it to show is so sexy. Anyway, the English usually can do it up right. Looking forward to the Olympics. And Mr. Craig is looking mighty fine.

It’s interesting to me that this big earthquake was at Concepcion, where Darwin also experienced a huge earthquake during his Beagle voyage. The land rose there several feet and Darwin used this as support for Lyell’s theories of land elevation and subsidence. The sea-level rise in Australia was only 20 cm at the maximum this time. No damage. Some people were even a bit disappointed there was no more excitement!David Oldroyd

The Knu/Knla fail to perform during the years after the 1988 burmese revolution because they was exactly in the same position than the other resistances in the thai border (as exemple the laos resistance). When you have your asset in the Thai Military Bank it is not easy to be free in his own strategy. You just follow the order of those who control your cash and who allow you to buy weapons..and i don’t speak about those who buy your logs and ore.You can do what you want as “rodomontade” and “political blabla”….you will follow the orders. It is really simple…at the time we inform them about what was the futur for KNLA if they follow the track from other resistances in the area……and the answer was clear….they cannot move….politically and technically…..politically because they was inside deep “trade” at the border with teck, tin and refugies and technically because at the time foreign financial service was restricted to operate in thailand (only one as foreigner was authorized. It was the only one free option possible)….. To plan an offensive you must to be free to invest in equipments, in training, in logistic,etc…..if you don’t have this liberty or if you have it under control you will never reach your proper goal……you will work just for the other….you will never reach the negociation….the other will finish it for you but with is own goal…you will never be in time….

Some would say that Western media coverage is in fact skewed towards the genocidal’ wars waged against minorities especially Christians. The recent spike in the number of ASSK news stories is simply related to her being free, receiving foreign officials and politically active once again.

What was the point of voting for a system that none of the three main parties actually wants? The Liberal Democrats preferred system is not AV. The Conservatives prefer First Past The Post. The Labour Party is divided between those who support FPTP and thos who want proportional Representation. The Jenkins Commission recommended AV Plus. Lots of people who want proper PR will have voted No. Assurances that a Yes vote would lead to further change are not to be trusted. The very idea of the next General Election being conducted by AV is simply too awful to contemplate. The public know a complete shambles when they see one and have given it short shrift.

This is a great conversation… for my 2 cents, I also like the idea of including our clients in our discussions. The transparency and opportunity for engagement is very appealing. However, I do think we need to flag a comment or an entire article as internal only. There have been issues I previously would have used Brainstorm to discuss, except for the concern that anyone can read all about it.

All the comments were really interesting except some comments that Thongchai wanted to say but didn’t dare to say it, due to the lese majeste law. I wonder how much more fun it would be if he can express freely. But I think most of the Thai know very well what really happened, and who were the real mastermind behind this massacre. They all know very well that Apisit didn’t have the gut to order this crackdown.

This is a great picture, and the issue of monks smoking (and esp the effort to reduce monastic smoking) is quite an interesting one in terms of how monastics are both disciplined and perceived within society. A couple of years ago, I think, the Mahatherasamakhom put out some statements about how Thai monks shouldn’t smoke. Around the same time, a relatively conservative monk I know in Chiang Mai (and by conservative I mean carefully embedded within the institution, not red/yellow etc) mentioned how monks who smoke are “not attractive.” This is the same thing that this (and other monks I’ve spoken with) would say when describing inappropriate actions by monks, and I took this at the time to be a reflective of the effort to get monks to quit smoking. That is, by making it contrary to the aesthetics of being a Thai monk.

A large percentage of of whatever you point out is astonishingly accurate and that makes me ponder why I hadn’t looked at this in this light previously. This particular piece really did switch the light on for me as far as this particular subject goes. However there is actually one particular factor I am not too cozy with and whilst I attempt to reconcile that with the actual central idea of your position, let me see exactly what the rest of the subscribers have to say.Nicely done.
