Welcome Cub Reporter Anne Elizabeth who is a romance author, comic creator, and a monthly columnist for RT BOOK Reviews. Her published romance credits include short stories and a new upcoming Navy SEAL Romance Novel Series debuting in Fall 2012. Her second graphic novel, THE PENDULUM (Book II of the PULSE series) releases this month. She lives on the west coat with her husband, a retired Navy SEAL.
Today Anne is giving away Five Free Copies of THE PENDULUM. Five lucky commenters will win a copy of THE PENDULUM.
The New York Comic was October 13-16. As the doors opened and the first fans entered the show floor, they moved into a dead run zipping past the popcorn and smoothie vendors on to the biggest draws. A third of them ran toward the gaming booths, another group funneled toward the fiction publishers, and the rest lined up at the comicbook booths.
Luckily, I had arrived earlier, and being an exhibitor had scoped out all of the must-see spots. Here’s the best of the best – in my opinion – in terms of New York Comic Con’s 2011 offering.
.
Paranormal Fiction Fans!!! The line for Hollow Maven Kim Harrison wound around several booths as fans were anxious for their own copy of the brand new guide to Rachel Morgan’s world called The Hollows Insider. I caught a sneak peak and this book is seriously cool! When I caught up briefly with Kim for a quick hug and she sent a shout-out to all her fans. Her graphic novel Blood Work is out now with Del Rey, too, and I’m told that the second one is in the works.
Marjorie Liu – brilliant HarperCollins author and Marvel writer — was also on the fast track with a mighty list of signings and panels. We caught a breath of fresh air outside of the convention, which was packed with costumed crusaders. Marjorie looked wonderful like she’d just stepped out a magazine Ad – how does she do that! My brow was glistening and yet, we both enjoyed a much anticipated chat while we relaxed for five minutes in the fresh air (FYI, Marjorie will be featured in an in-depth interview in RT Book Reviews in February). She sent a smile and wave to everyone in Beyond-Her-Book Blog-land!
Back inside the Comic Con, I zipped by Jeaniene Frost who was promoting “A BITE BEFORE CHRISTMAS” and “ONE GRAVE AT A TIME”. The HarperCollins Booth was hopping with great books!
.
Patty Briggs was signing at Penguin. Her fan line created major traffic jams as readers leaned in to hear news about their favorite stories. She has fresh reads coming our way and they will releasing in 2012 – Iron Kissed and River Marked (Mercy Thompson) and Fair Game from the Alpha & Omega series, too. In November, Patty will be the Guest of Honor at the TusCon 38 Science Fiction Convention in Tucson, AZ.

In terms of comics…I met Stan Lee!!! Okay, I could faint right there, but this iconic man hugged me twice and let me take a picture with him. Attending the announcement of the ROMEO AND JULIET: THE WAR. This graphic novel highlights Shakespeare’s legendary story and is set in the future. This book promises to be as amazing as the man who is spear-heading the project!
Don’t forget…CASTLE’s DEADLY STORM by Marvel! So I finally took a few minutes to read the brand new Castle graphic novel written by Brian Bendis and Kelly Sue McCormick. It’s AMAZING!!! True to Castle style! Unfortunately, I did NOT see Nathan Fillion who is such a regular at the San Diego Event.
IDW released the second season of the hard cover TRUE BLOOD: TAINTED BLOOD graphic novel this week and has brought Ghostbusters – Heat up those blasters! — back to comics along with COBRA and GI JOE, too! Del Rey gave away free copies of the first issue of George RR Martin’s A Game of Thrones. And, Bluewater has a new biography comic about Steve Jobs and his legacy releasing at the end of this month.
One of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE Comic/Graphic Novel Discoveries at the NYCC was produced by HERMES PRESS. They had a hard cover edition of My Favorite Martian, which was a TV show starring Ray Walton and Bill Bixby. The comics inside this book were originally produced by Gold Key and were written by Paul S. Newman and drawn by Russ Manning. This book is super-cool, and it is going to live on my treasure shelf as soon as I read it at least a dozen times.
Star sightings: Among the stars were Eliza Dushku (Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse) who is the new voice of Catwoman and she signed autographs along with Mark Hammill and Rick Fox. I saw Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, Zeb Wells, and Doug Goldstein (Robot Chicken) as well as Jason O’Mara and Stephen Lang (Terra Nova – I love the dinosaurs!) and Haven stars Lucas Bryant and Eric Balfour. The best line from a panel was from Haven when the writers shared how nervous they were about presenting a 15-page mythology document to Stephen King. Obviously, though, he liked it because the SyFy show of Haven has really taken off!
Bottom Line: I hope you enjoyed the wrap-up! Have a super-hero day, everyone!
Anne Elizabeth: WIN an OPPORTUNITY to BE in an e-COMIC. Your face could be the HERO or HEROINE in a ZOMBIE COMIC! Great article and great giveaways! Glad you had such a wonderful time! Very cool that you met Stan Lee!
What a fun event, Anne, and you did a great job of covering the NY Comicon. Would have loved to have been there, which reminds me. I was in Seattle this weekend at the Emerald City Conference and during the signing I kept seeing readers with copies of your Pulse of Power. I thought you were there at first and was going to fuss at you for not saying hello – “g” – but found out you had graciously dontated them. The readers were thrilled.
Anne Elizabeth, outstanding coverage of the event. I heard a rumor that you were like a whirlwind and it must be true. I am sooo looking forward to seeing you next year. One of my friends at the event told me you were thinking of including a superhero dog in one of your future books. Is that true? Just for the record I am a big dog fan. I can’t wait to get a signed copy of your upcoming book.
Thanks for the fabulous report Anne Elizabeth!!!
I go to San Diego Comic-Con every year, but I’d love to see NY’s version someday!
Loved the pictures! Stan Lee!!! SQUEE!!!
Lisa
One of my biggest disappointments is that I have yet to make it to a comic con. I want to go so bad, and your experience at the event is EXACTLY why I want to go. My resolution for next year is to get my butt in gear and get there. I really have no excuse. 2012….comic con or bust….HAHA!
Glad you had a great time! Thanks for the extra push of motivation!
Hi, everyone! THANK YOU for the wonderful posts. Yes, I am considering adding a dog to my next book.
As to the inspiration to attend a comic con, next year I will give away ONE FREE PASS to the New York Comic Con. Perhaps that will add to the ease of the goal. Barbara will have all the details next August, so stay tuned!!! Hooyah & hugs!!!
Awesome!
Hi, Anne! I’ve only been to Comic Con through Barbara’s blog! I sigh each time. Maybe one year. I’m a comic girl from back in the days they spun around on wire carousels in my local drug store.
Love, love love! that you posted about this! Romance + comics? I’m in heaven! Thanks for an awesome update! (AND a fabulous giveaway!)
My pleasure! I hope to see all of you at the New York Comic Con next year!
I agree romance comics ROCK!!! Cheers!
Oh my Lord… I decided to stop by here because I hadn’t been in a while and I see a post about Comic Con with some of my favorite Paranormal Authors! *dies* Ohhh to have been a bug on that wall
You’re so lucky Barbara, getting to meet all those fabulous authors
I think I’d totally stalk every author if I ever made it there.. I wonder if a person has time to stalk all the authors
I think its amazing what writers/authors can do. I hate writing papers myself and would love to write but I think I’m a bit too wordy so then I’d have to do like a trillion edits and then I’d hate it. *grins* Thanks for posting this Barbara as I really live through posts about Reader conventions that I’ll probably never get to LOL
I’ve actually never read a comic
) Though I wouldn’t mind getting one for some of the series that I do read
CASTLE!! I’ve got to go next year. Love him!!!
Thanks for an awesome recap. There’s a lot more at comicon than just comics. Who knew?
I’m always late to the party! Mahalo, Anne Elizabeth, for the recap! We live vicariously through you as you jet set, coast to coast! One day I shall carry your luggage!
George R.R. Martin makes a huge breakthrough with this well written, immediately engrossing, and incredibly intricate tale that keeps you hooked all the way through. Martin steps out on a limb as he writes a fantasy novel whose “good” characters are not invincible and sometimes bad things can and do happen. Most fantasy I’ve read involves the main characters in impossible situations that resolve themselves by dumb luck or the characters own super-human abilities. Martin goes above and beyond and writes a story that allows for inexperience in a characters fighting ability, both on the battle field and in the political arena. The protagonist does not always make the right decisions, and the good guy doesn’t always win.
The lines between good and evil are blurred as Martin uses his impressive command of characters to present situations from different points of view. “Good” isn’t always good, and “Evil” isn’t always evil. Characters are given diverse personalities and therefore open up the possibility of role-reversal. It’s like these are real people making real decisions, and as in life, anything is possible.
If your looking for a story that follows a one-dimensional track and is easily predictable, this is not the story for you. On the other hand, if you want a mature story that is filled with intricate characters and engrossing story lines that leave you guessing and begging for more, you’ve come to the right place. Hats off to this incredible author and the story that he has created.
Have a nice day,
Fane @

Heartburn or acid reflux, also referred to as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, or GERD, comes about because of the coexistence of two diseases. The first acid reflux disease contributing condition is a retrograde flow of stomach contents into the esophagus. Though, the reflux itself does not automatically lead to gastro-esophageal reflux disease signs and symptoms or histologic changes, and can appear among healthy men or women as well. In such a case, the process is referred to as “physiologic gastroesophageal reflux”.

Thanks for your posting. I also think laptop computers have gotten more and more popular these days, and now will often be the only form of computer used in a household. The reason being at the same time that they are becoming more and more very affordable, their processing power is growing to the point where these are as potent as personal computers from just a few years back.

Thanks for the suggestions you share through this website. In addition, many young women exactly who become pregnant do not even seek to get health insurance because they are concerned they might not qualify. Although many states at this moment require that insurers provide coverage no matter the pre-existing conditions. Rates on most of these guaranteed plans are usually bigger, but when thinking about the high cost of medical care it may be a new safer approach to take to protect your own financial future.
