Yesterday was the opening day for the convention of all conventions for fandom …Dragon Con. These avid convention goers take their roles seriously and it’s not for the faint of heart. Costumes run the gamut from G to X. Even the kids dress up to get into the act. Karen Marie Moning sent me a picture of her and Brent Spiner from Star Trek: The Next Generation at the airport.
One of my first run ins was with an elf channeling Orlando Bloom from Lord of the Rings. He was very popular as cameras flashed. But it was the 8 foot tall Wookie who stole the show with a pack on his back that actually would make the Wookie sounds. Then there was the woman who wore next to nothing and it looked like just a snake curved around her body to cover the crucial areas.
I stopped in a Vampires Are the New Vampires panel with Charlaine Harris and Laurell K. Hamilton. The questioners were lined up to find out how Charlaine felt about what they did with her characters in the tv show (Fine) and if Laurell is in any way like Anita Blake (No, and having blond hair helps). Jana Oliver was giving a reading of her book, but, of course, I was rushing off and didn’t get a chance to hear her, but I’m sure she did great. I did have time to stop and wish her good luck.

I saw a couple of police officers from Eureka and told them how sorry I was that their series was canceled, and they said so were they. Then I asked another guy who was dressed like a police officer what show he was from and he admitted that he actually was an Atlanta sergeant on duty. Well, I just had to take a picture.

The one drawback, if you can call it that, is the crowds. This enthusiastic group is so big that en mass it moves at a snail’s pace. In order to get from one area to another, allow yourself a lot of time. The other part is that there is something going on in each of the five hotels, the Marriott, the Hyatt, the Hilton, the Westin and the Sheraton. Lines form outside for some panels for hours in the hot Atlanta sun. But it’s obvious that no one is complaining. Many plan their whole vacations around this event and have for years. I met one man who’s been coming for 15 years and has no plans to stop in the near future.
Bottom Line: This fanfest is for everyone whose inner self has been screaming for the opportunity to be a stormtrooper.

I love DragonCon. ONe of my all time favorite venues. Wish I could be there this year. GREAT fun.

You’re totally correct! G to X. And lots of body paint. Good thing it’s hot in ATL for Labor Day weekend!
And all the fake guns! I’m nervous enough, but if I were a TSA agent…!
MyHero & I were commenting how all these guys must’ve driven. Those props would never make it on a plane.
Had to laugh about the police officer!
Enjoy! I’ll be back creature watching tomorrow.
You did it. You posted a picture of Brent Spiner. Thank you.
I ran into Charlaine, too. She and her assistant Carla are adorable. Love the picture with Karen Marie Moning (your hair has grown, Karen!) and Brent. All the DragonCon staff has been so nice over the weekend. Glad you got pics of them. And the two “law enforcement” photos are a hoot.
I love Dragon Con!!
