One of my favorite things about authors is how much of themselves they give back to the community. No matter where the need is in the world, it seems you’ll find an author willing to give their time, energies and even their works for a good cause.
Being generous seems to be second nature to authors. Many of you are familiar with Brenda Novak’s yearly auction for juvenile diabetes. She has already raised over $1 million so far. But there are a number of other authors who support many different charities.
Eleven authors have banded together to support breast cancer research with their writing. Authors4theCure, which includes award-winning and New York Times bestselling authors, as well as two breast cancer survivors, is donating proceeds from the sale of their paranormal anthology, Entangled, to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). I recently talked to them about the making of an anthology for charity.
BV: How did this anthology come about?
Edie Ramer: Misty Evans and I wanted to do a collaboration together, and in three or four emails we decided to do a paranormal anthology of short stories and have the proceeds go to breast cancer. Everything about this went that smoothly. Except the writing. (I’m speaking for myself there.) Misty and every writer involved was a joy to work with.
BV: How did you decide what authors would be involved?
Edie Ramer: Who wouldn’t want Allison Brennan, Cynthia Eden, Jennifer Estep and Nancy Haddock? All of the other authors, too. They’re friends whose writing we admire and books we buy. There were a lot of cyber squeals in emails between Misty and me as we received acceptances. It was great fun to read the stories as they came in. They’re all so good!
BV: Any special reason for a Halloween theme?
Misty Evans: We wanted the release of Entangled to correspond with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, so Halloween was the perfect element to tie the stories together. We have a nice diversity of suspense and romance mixed with ghosts, witches, demons, vampires, psychics and other fun paranormal characters. The stories will put you in the mood for a fabulous Halloween!
BV: Can people donate to your cause if they aren’t able to purchase the ebook?
Liz Kreger: Absolutely. All the proceeds are going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. You can go directly to their website and make a personal donation. Make it memory of someone you’ve loved and lost … or for that matter, someone currently going through this horrid journey. Finding a cure for breast cancer is BCRF’s number one goal and a goal that’s near and dear to my heart. I’m a fifteen year survivor and am currently going through chemo yet again. Cancer is a tenacious bitch which can appear (and reappear) when
you least expect it.
Entangled includes ten suspense-filled paranormal stories from authors Lori Brighton, Michelle Diener, Cynthia Eden, Jennifer Estep, Misty Evans, Nancy Haddock, Liz Kreger, Dale Mayer, Michelle Miles, and Edie Ramer, plus a novella by Allison Brennan. Stacia Kane contributed the foreword and the book’s formatting and cover art were also donated to the project. Today is the release date and it will available as an ebook at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords and other online retailers.
Karen Marie Moning just finished up a contest on her site with all proceeds going to relief for Japan. In July, Karen raised over $8,000 by offering tickets to her FeverCon and critiques to authors.

Author Paul Levine is devoting 100% of all royalties from TO SPEAK FOR THE DEAD to Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital for pediatric cancer treatment and research. Paul says, “That was my first book (1990), which was out of print until I published it on Kindle and Nook last summer. It hit number 1 on Kindle’s hardboiled list, and continues to sell well a year later.”
.
These are just a few of the many causes that authors support. Please feel free to offer your charity in the comments section along with the link to it.
