WW Ladies Book Club Blurbs

Barbara Vey -- August 3rd, 2011

Hard to believe we’re in the dog days of summer already.  August seemed to sneak up and soon kids will be back in school (I still think it should be after Labor Day so they can enjoy the best days of summer).  But, before the hustle and bustle of doing all the back to school shopping, there’s still time to relax and enjoy the sun while reading a good book.

Romancing the Countess by Ashley March

Read by Ashley

Sebastian, the Earl of Wriothesly, loved his wife with all his heart and he thought his wife did too, until a fatal carriage accident exposures her affair with his best friend, Ian George. Now Sebastian is determined to avoid a scandal in order to protect his young son.  Leah George once was madly in love with her husband Ian, until she discovered him in bed with his best friend’s wife over a year ago. She has lived in silence since but now their deaths have freed her and Leah is determined to enjoy her new found freedom, even if it does create rumors and scandals, especially rumors about her and Sebastian…

An endearing story about two people who get a second chance at love. Filled with deep emotions and fiery passions, Romancing the Countess is my new favorite book of the summer!

The Officer’s Secret by Debby Giusti

Read by Heidi

Maggie Bennett is called home because her sister is having troubles. She is devastated to find her dead in her military housing, which is eerily similar to her father’s death over sixteen years ago. Nate Patterson is the investigator who is assigned to this apparent suicide, but Maggie needs to convince him otherwise, before it’s too late.

One of my favorite things about mysteries is the whodunit. My gold star seal of approval, is when you are blindsided and the killer isn’t the person you were suspecting. That is what makes this book so much fun!! Love, Death, and blindsides!! Excellent!!

Something Wicked by Michelle Rowen

Read by Stacey

Eden is still possessed by a hunky demon named Darrak (who gains solid, separate form during the day).  This time, the search for someone or something that can break the curse placed upon him ages ago leads them to a Wizard’s assistant…and a demon from Darrak’s past who might not be exactly what either of them needs.  As each of them get pulled in different directions, will the trust and safety they’ve found during this unique situation survive?

Great world building, wonderful characters combined with a new and slightly darker dimension to Rowen’s writing make the second book in the ‘Living in Eden’ series an absolute win for me.  The dual narration brings me closer to the characters and makes me much more invested in the outcome of this extremely satisfying relationship.

Trades of the Flesh by Faye L. Booth

Read by Ashley

After her mother’s death Lydia is forced to become a “working girl” in order to support herself and her younger sister. Lydia is determined to provide a stable life for her sister and to pay for her younger sister’s school. Lydia’s life begins to pick up when she meets Henry, a young and rich surgeon who offers her a way to make more money, by nude modeling. By doing this Lydia believes she can finally afford to not be a working girl anymore.  What starts off as a business arrangement, starts to venture into something more when neither can deny their chemistry together.

I found Trades of the Flesh to be a fascinating novel about the body, desire and passion. An extraordinary novel about the devastating outcomes that sometimes happens when two unlikely people fall in love.

Blackberry Summer by RaeAnne Thayne

Read by Heidi

Claire Bradford is forced to rely on others when a car accident changes her life forever. She is uncomfortable leaning on others for help, when she is usually the one to help those in need. Her best friends younger brother Riley McKnight may be the man who teased her in childhood, but now as the new town police chief; Riley seems like a different man to her. A man who could bring a change to her future.

Looking at the struggles between the two main characters, both internally and externally, make the story move so quickly. I thought it was very inspiring how the town came together for a tragic loss and became a community again. It made me think that anything is possible.

Hammered by Kevin Hearne

In Book 3 of The Iron Druid Chronicles, Atticus O’Sullivan fulfills a promise to accompany some mutually vengeful companions to Asgard to kill a vicious thug, Thor the thunder god. As a 2000+ year old druid, the last in the world, Atticus possesses some talents and magics that can make the endeavor successful. Facing the furious deities of Norse mythology will be tough, and getting there is half the battle.

I listened to Hounded (1), Hexed (2), and Hammered (3), one book right after the other, and I hate that I have to wait ages until the next story comes out. For a wise and powerful ancient, Atticus is a down-to-earth, easy-going, cheerful, likable fellow, and reader Luke Daniels’ portrayal suits him to a T. The Iron Druid Chronicles wanders through an urban-fantasy-land full of fanciful and mythological beings, and is fast-paced, exciting, engrossing, and unstoppable.

Bottom Line:  Did you know that this week is National Psychic Week?  I did…I think I may be psychic.

Oh, a lot of good reads! I’m a fan of pretty much all the genres today and have Debby’s book – my MIL got to hers before I’ve had a chance to read mine and she loved it, said that Debby really knows her military details. I’m really curious about the HAMMERED book, JoyceAnn. Haven’t heard about that one and think it would be fun one when I get a reading break. :)

    Just discovered the Kevin Hearne series and am waiting for this one. A friend recommended them to me, and now I’m hooked. Added a little variety to a reading diet that’s usually full of romance! I know when I finish “Hammered,” I’ll be anxiously awaiting the next one, which doesn’t come out until spring. :-{

It is more traffic and much more difficult to cruise, and when you are able to drive it easily tempts you. And that can only bring about an accident. What do you think my friends? BTW, I’m sorry that therefore i ask in this topic as well as a comment, but last touched me sad situation and My business is keen to the opinion.
