Jack: Secret Histories by F. Paul Wilson
This weekend I attended my Saturday Sisters Christmas brunch and while everyone else brought food, I brought books.  No calories and completely fat-free.  Many took books from authors they’d not read before (which to me is always a good thing).  So, when you’re invited to a party this time of year, consider books as a hostess gift (perhaps with a nice Chianti?).

From author F. Paul Wilson:
I am pleased to announce that JACK: Secret Histories has been selected to appear on the VOYA list.  The full list will be available in VOYA’s January/February issue.  This list is chosen by a group of librarians, middle school teachers and middle school students from over 200 submissions annually.  This list of books that adults and youth agreed were the very best of the best.  It is published in the February issue of VOYA and boasts a readership of more than 15,000.  VOYA practices your advocacy and youth participation, facilitating and enabling youth to make their own reading choices and decisions.  (Congratulations Paul!  And I am currently working with the local high school to have students blurb about YA books, so let me know if you have any you’d like done.)

From Random House:  A Christmas Present for you, free eBooks from Random House and BooksOnBoard.  Try out several of our bestsellers.  (I did check this out and while you can download them to several devices, the eReader on iPhone isn’t one of them <sigh>)

Pete
Ok, not the dragon from Emily’s book, but I adore Pete’s Dragon, Elliot.

From author Emily Bryan:  A free Christmas story that you can download, A Dragon Caern Christmas.  (I consider Emily the queen of the best first lines in books and this one is no exception, “One ball is hanging low.” Jacquelyn cocked her head and narrowed her eyes at her husband.  Well, you’ll have to read the story to see what she means.)

From author Karen Dionne:  Yes, the economic situation is scary. Yes, people are watching their pennies. But books are still one of the best bargains around.

Buy a book for yourself or as a gift, then post the title and author’s name in the comment trail. Every time a book is purchased, we’ll add its cover to the slideshow. Fiction or non-fiction; cookbooks or comic books; children’s, e-books – they’re all good! When a book is mentioned more than once, we’ll list it as a favorite.

Go ahead! Tell the world: How many books did YOU buy?   (Check this out because they have all the books listed with links and book covers.  Let your choices be heard!)

Previews by Andrew Serge Bernier
And I just want to remind everyone to go back and check out the Saturday WW Ladies Book Blurb (special edition since they’ve been reading so many more books lately) and my new feature, Sunday Matinee.  Every Sunday I’ll post book videos.  They won’t be labeled, so you can just enjoy the unexpected, just like when you go to the movie theater.

As always, please feel free to email me with your news, kudos, special events, happily ever afters.

Bottom Line:  Only 10 more shopping days til Christmas.  (Are you panicking yet?)

I know a lot of you are cat lovers out there, so this Christmas video is just for you.

Barbara – What a great idea to show up with books instead of food since most gatherings usually have way more food than everyone can eat. I had no idea about those links posted – will check them out. As for the holidays, I have so few to actually buy gifts for it’s pretty easy. Most of my godkids, nieces & nephews want money. “g” Instead of exchanging gifts with friends, we all try to meet for meals with each other during the holidays – sort of like sharing time and catching up as a gift.

Thanks to Karen Dionne and her buy more books blog, I have bought all my family members books this year. I told a relative this and she claimed her son “doesn’t read”…so I bought him another book. Maybe she won’t be able to say, “he doesn’t read” next year. *sneaky grin* It’s a great cause and I’m proud to be a part of it!

I’ve got to say the women at my brunch were excited to have the chance to try someone new. Recently I had two teenage nieces tell me they read books I had given them over 6 months ago. Sometimes you just have to be patient with kids and enjoy when they discover how much fun they had reading.

I LOVE the idea of a book as a hostess gift! And thanks for drawing folks’ attention to the Buy Books blog, Barbara. It’s really astounding to see the long list of books that some people are buying, but even more heartwarming is when someone lists just one – I can’t help but think how important that purchase was to them if they went to all the trouble to visit the blog and list it. Yeah. Books are good.

I might also like to state that most people that find themselves without having health insurance are generally students, self-employed and those that are without a job. More than half of those uninsured are really under the age of 35. They do not experience they are requiring health insurance because they’re young plus healthy. Their particular income is typically spent on houses, food, plus entertainment.
