I had such good intentions this week of finishing about four books to tell you about. Well, I did read two very good books, but they were for cover quotes, so I’ll have to talk about them at a later date. I finished Janet Evanovich’s Sizzlin’ Sixteen which only took me part of the day. The rest of the week, I grazed.
I had a problem downloading some books from NetGalley (not their fault). NetGalley is a site where reviewers can get Advance Reading Copies of books for e-readers instead of waiting for the hard copy of the book. I wanted to try it out, but it turns out that it has to go through Amazon and they charge a small fee to transfer the file to you. Annoying, but that’s just the way it is.
I received four new books on Kindle that I ended up reading the first chapter of each at a different time. Then the mail came and there were at least five books in the bucket that caught my eye. I put them in a pile, but at various times during the week I would end up in the area and pick up one of the books, just for a small taste of it. One was so good that I’m halfway through it just by reading it a willy-nilly.
Meanwhile, I’ve got a book at my bedside I’m almost done with and one I’m listening to in my car (about three more discs to go there…need to drive more). Yesterday a book came that I had promised to read ages ago and it needs to be done right away, so I started it very late last night and I should finish it today.
I’d much rather pick up one book at a time and read it all the way through before starting the next one, but then something comes up and the next thing you know you’ve got something different in your hands. It wouldn’t be so bad, but when some are the same genre it can get confusing.
My goal, before I leave for Thrillerfest Monday, is to finish every book that I’ve started. Oh, and then Starz television sent me the 16 hour edition (on 4 DVDs) of their mini series, Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett and since I’ll be meeting him next week, I want to have that finished. (I read the book when it first came out back in 1979).
Yikes! I just realized that this is the 4th of July weekend and tomorrow is the big family get-together. I’m bringing the Taffy Apple salad and am in charge of children’s crafts. How did this sneak up on me? I wonder if I can get the kids to watch the DVDs with me and then, as a craft, we can do Pillars of the Earth diaramas?
What do you do? How do you keep yourself on track reading just one book when your TBR pile is screaming at you, “Pick me…pick me!” ? Do you have to finish the first book before starting the second or are you a multi-tasking kind of reader?
Bottom Line: With Thrillerfest next week, what will stop me from starting one of those books on my flight home?

I hate it that I’m not reading as much as I used to. A book has to be good for me to read it all the way through now. Sometimes, when I’m so busy, it has to be very good.
Have fun over the weekend!
Barbara, I, too am a multitasker when it comes to books. I got so far behind because I was sick off and on with asthmatic bronchitis, and right now I have 17 arc’s to read (with more coming next week), 3 reviews to write up, and I am readig 4 books at a time. I’m lucky that I can switch around and remember what had gone on before I put that book down!
Have fun at Thriller Fest. This is one convention I would love to go to. I’ve been to RT a couple of times and RWA, which was wonderful, but thrillers are my favorite genre and I’d love to meet some of those authors.
Hope to see you at Readers ‘n ‘Ritas — Went to their first one. I review for their site, which is one of the best sites on the internet.
I’m usually reading 3-5 books at any given time. It’s rare that I will start a book and finish it without jumping to something else, unless it’s a series romance that I can finish in one or two sittings. E-reading on my nook has given me the ability to jump around even more…I’m probably in the middle of at least 10 books right now. Hopefully the holiday weekend will allow me some time to catch up!
An ebook I have to read all the way through and I usually just have one print book going at a time unless I’ve suddenly lost interest and have to start something else and then go back. And then there are the magazines, the newspapers, and whatever else has caught my eye online….. I’m really jealous that you have the DVDs of “Pillars of the Earth” and would like to know what you think of the miniseries.
Barbara –
Are you sure you have to pay an Amazon fee? I pulled this off NetGalley’s website:
Kindle. Have the galley emailed to your Kindle as a PDF. You’ll need to enter your Kindle email in your NetGalley Profile, and add kindle@netgalley.com to your approved email list in your Kindle account on Amazon.
All y’all must be speed readers, because there is no way I can get a book read in one sitting. Or a day, most times. Well, maybe, if I do absolutely nothing else…which I’ve been known to do. Anyway, I usually have one print book and one audio book in the works. It would save time if I could both read and listen at the same time, but I wouldn’t give up the undivided attention both books deserve. (And I, too, suffer from the “pick me! pick me!” TBR stack syndrome.)
Very useful post. Would you mind if I quoted parts of this page on my blog if I provided a link back here and cited you as the source? Thanks

Thanks for the posting. My partner and i have generally observed that a majority of people are needing to lose weight simply because wish to appear slim along with attractive. Even so, they do not continually realize that there are additional benefits for you to losing weight additionally. Doctors claim that obese people have problems with a variety of disorders that can be directly attributed to their particular excess weight. The good thing is that people who’re overweight in addition to suffering from various diseases can help to eliminate the severity of the illnesses by simply losing weight.
