Barbara Vey -- March 28th, 2013

Yesterday you all had the chance to name Chris Keelar’s baby.  There were some great suggestions, but here’s what Chris had to say:

Well, first off, I want to say how slightly bizarre it is to have my personal life up on display like this. LOL. That said, Barbara’s been a great friend for a long time–I don’t think she’s old enough to be my mom, sadly–and so it was worth it. I also want to thank all of you for taking the time to weigh in. Liz and I are flattered.

There were a lot of great options. Obviously, I can’t promise I’m going with any of them–especially because Liz isn’t even home at the moment, and she probably wants a bit of input. That said, they’ll go on the list, and here are my favorites (ranked from third place to first, though I think there’s only a prize for first):

Isabelle. I have always liked this name, and Izzy as a nickname.
Minerva. Actually, our top contender at the moment is indeed a goddess, though Greek not Roman.
and…my favorite is…

Musette. I like the name a lot, not least of which because it reminds me of Musica, mistress of the Cosmic Harp (the chick from Robotech), which was a name I liked but that got shot down early. Ah well.

So, thanks again, everyone!

So the winner is Kathleen Nordstrom.  Kathleen, send me your street address to bvey@publishersweekly.com and Boroughs Publishing will send you your prize.

Now here’s the WW Ladies reads this week.

Bite Me, Your Grace by Brooklyn AnnBite Me Your Grace

Read by joysann

Angelica Winthrop defies the conventions of the ton to find a spouse, dreaming of being a famous gothic novelist like Mary Shelley and Dr John Polidori. Polidori’s popular book The Vampyre has put the Lord Vampire of London, Ian Ashton, the Duke of Burnrath, in danger. When Angelica discovers his secret, he convinces her the only course to follow is for them to marry. But their deception of love comes to mean something more to each of them.

It was fun to read about the strong stubborn independent-thinking heroine, a woman before her time. Amusing and romantic, and, to some degree, historically sound, this debut book in Brooklyn Ann’s series just makes me anticipate the next one.

Did You Miss Me? by Karen Rose

Read by Joan

FBI agent Joseph Carter has for long months pined for Baltimore prosecutor Daphne Montgomery, rearranging his work in order to be close to her. He believes he has now missed his chance with her until he is pulled into her life when her son and his girlfriend are kidnapped.

I loved this book! It is a great combination of suspense and an ongoing love story. There are many interesting characters that could be friend or foe. Karen Rose kept me frantically turning the pages all the way to the end.

The Lady Most Willing by Julia Quinn, Eloisa James and Connie Brockway

Read by joysann

After an evening of inebriating festivities in his decrepit castle, an aging Scottish laird leads his retainers in a raid on a neighboring estate to kidnap four young eligible heiresses for his two nephews, titled gentlemen themselves, and surely at least two of the ladies will serve. The women, knowing they are in no danger, mostly want to get where it’s warm ahead of the blizzard. But romance seems contagious, and one union after another makes the adventure worthwhile.

The Lady Most Willing is a lighthearted romantic collaboration by these winning authors, each taking a different couple’s story. In places it’s enchanting, and in others, laugh-out-loud funny. As an easy read that warms and charms the heart, I am recommending it to friends.

Heidi

Heidi

The Other Woman by Hank Phillippi RyanThe Other Woman

Read by Heidi

Jane Ryland did the right thing, never revealing her source for her TV news report as an anchor, but at the cost of losing everything. Humiliated, she has become a newspaper reporter, running after every story, to prove herself a legitimate newswoman. Jane finds herself in the middle of a scandal, looking for a mistress of a Senator before a very important election. Detective Jack Brogan has his hands full, with three dead bodies of women who seem to be connected, but Jack knows there is something more. Jack and Jane soon realize their stories are somehow connected and look for the killer, before one of them becomes a victim themselves.

I have heard wonderful things about Hank Phillippi Ryan books, but have never had the opportunity read one, until now. What a book to start off with! My mind kept spinning with the mystery of who the killer was of the dead girls, who the mistress could have been, why was the Senate race so heated, and how will it end? Then, with all the plots, the super twists and turns, I found myself curling my toes through the whole book!! The ending didn’t disappoint either, which makes for a great read!! This will be a wonderful book to cuddle up with during Spring showers on a weekend afternoon.

Bottom Line:  Cabbage Patch dolls always creeped me out, but the picture at the top kind of fits.

Name Chris Keeslar’s Baby

Barbara Vey -- March 26th, 2013
chris keeslar2

Barbara Vey and Chris Keeslar at the SoCal Conference

For those of you who didn’t know yet, Boroughs editor, Chris Keeslar and his wife, author Liz Maverick, are expecting their first baby, a girl, this September.  This swoon worthy editor has left many writers tongue-tied as they tried to pitch their books to him.  Now he’ll have a daughter to adore him.

.

.

I recently ran into Chris at the SoCal RWA Conference (Southern California) and heard the good news.  Chris and I go way back to when I first started at PW.  I was just 3 weeks into blogging and attended an RT Booklovers Convention in Texas.  I had no clue what I was doing and didn’t know an agent from an editor from a publishers.  Chris and Leah Hultenschmidt (both at Dorchester at the time) took pity on me and explained what the heck was going on.  They introduced me to people and spent the week making sure my confusion stayed at a minimum.

baby name,

When I would come to New York, we always got together and I’d see him at many book events.  He was like another son to me (age wise, he fit right in between Andrew and Keith).

.

So, I’m absolutely thrilled for their expected bundle of joy.  At the SoCal Conference, we had dinner with authors Susan and Harry Squires and I had the most marvelous idea for a blog…let’s help name Chris’s new baby.  Of course, I did ask Chris if it was ok to blog about him and being the good sport that he is he agreed and Boroughs Publishing is even throwing in a prize.

.

Please put on your thinking caps and help Chris and Liz come up with a baby name.  Be nice and clever.  Chris will pick a winner, but doesn’t promise that they will eventually use the name.  Picking a baby name is hard work and you want it to be perfect.

.Cassandra by Starlight

Just leave a baby name for a chance to win.  Boroughs Publishing Group is offering a 10 story subscription to their Lunchbox Romances and the first two books in the Starlight trilogy, Cassandra by Starlight and, just released, Together in Starlight by Susan Mac Nicol.

BTW, the winners of The Wisdom of Hair by Kim Boykin are Amy Moore and Nan Cook.  Please email me (bvey@publishersweekly.com)  your street addresses and Kim will send the book to you.  Congratulations!!

Bottom Line:  I can still remember the horror of my husband telling me he hoped we would have twins so we could name them Yvonne and Yvette…boy, would that be hard to yell when you’re mad.

Joysann’s Interview on CBS Sunday Morning – Afterword

Barbara Vey -- March 25th, 2013
joysann

joysann

As I, joysann, blogged on Friday, yesterday CBS Sunday Morning had a great little story on Ellora’s Cave Publishing, and did absolutely wonderfully with the interview with author Desiree Holt. With only a quick shot behind the scenes, a brief exchange with EC CEO Patty Marks, and very brief glances at the gorgeous cover models (waaay not enough!), it was still a fun few minutes.

This particular CBS Sunday Morning show was about unusual businesses and their successes, intended to be a brief lighthearted look. It was not supposed to be an in-depth story about the publishing industry, or the moral implications of erotica, or the value of women’s fiction in all its genres. And Bill Geist made it a fun story for a little informative entertainment. I think any positive exposure to romance fiction is good for the industry.

This has been an interesting two weeks of anxious anticipation waiting for this segment to broadcast. I’m delighted with the segment, for Ellora’s Cave and for Desiree. And though my little interview wasn’t used, I am glad I got to be part of it, even behind the scenes… equal parts disappointed that I didn’t appear in the segment and grateful that I didn’t have a chance to make a fool of myself. I imagine I’ll have an opportunity for that another time.

Bottom Line:  It still was an experience to remember.

This coming Sunday, March 24, the CBS Sunday Morning news show will be doing a segment on Ellora’s Cave Publishing and I, joysann was there to witness it.  Last week CBS Correspondent Bill Geist and his crew flew into Akron, Ohio, to tour the EC offices and warehouse, and interview CEO Patty Marks about the unusual and successful business of publishing erotica and their trademarked Romantica®.

Bill Geist interviewing Author Desiree Holt

Bill Geist interviewing Author Desiree Holt

Along with Patty, they also did an interview with one of EC’s most popular authors, Desiree Holt, who has written and published over 130 books. Another interesting fact about Desiree? Along with producing exciting, sizzling romance fiction, she is a 76 year old widowed grandmother. For some reason some people find that incongruous. I just find her brilliant.

.

So this is the story CBS Sunday Morning will be broadcasting. For my part, well, I was invited by EC to be one of three reader/fans to be interviewed for the segment, and I am enthusiastically both of those things. I was delighted!

.

.

.

I dragged my friend Joan Short, another reader/fan, into the EC offices, and while waiting for our turns to be interviewed, we were invited to watch a bookcover photo shoot, put together to film how it’s done. That was interesting, too. With the need for romantic looking covers for the books, the subjects are gorgeous. There were two lovely young women, and, of course, some of the famous Ellora’s Cavemen. Yep, it was fascinating.

.

.

Bill Geist and the Cover Models

I’m looking forward to seeing the story on Sunday Morning, seeing the interview with my friend Desiree, and of course, seeing how the news crew saw the photo shoot.

The Wisdom of Hair

Barbara Vey -- March 18th, 2013
Kim Boykin

Kim Boykin

Today’s guest blogger won this spot with a winning bid in the Brenda Novak Auction for Diabetes, Kim Boykin. Kim loves to write fiction stories about strong Southern women, because that’s what she knows.  She is an accomplished public speaker and serves on the board of the South Carolina Writer’s Workshop. She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband, three dogs, and 126 rose bushes.

Be sure to check out her book, The Wisdom of Hair.

The Wisdom of Hir

When was the last time you made a drastic change in your hair? Why did you do it? Was it just a whim? Or was there a catalyst like a milestone birthday, a breakup, a new job?

Growing up in a tiny town in South Carolina, I don’t think I was fully aware that women came into my mom’s beauty shop to change their lives, but that’s exactly what happened. Even if it was just for a few hours, they dropped their cares on the doorstep and entered a safe place where they could say anything they wanted, knowing my mom would love them up AND give them a fabulous hairstyle. So when they left, even if it was just for a few hours or forever, they really had changed their hair and change their lives.

That’s a reoccurring theme in my debut novel The Wisdom of Hair (Berkley Books,) the story of Zora Adams, a young woman who finds her calling in beauty school, has a secret romance with the wrong guy, but finds her HEA with the help of a wonderful community quirky women. I didn’t intentionally plant the idea, but it is true.

We have a big job interview? We clamor for a new do. A bad breakup? Off with our hair! And when things are good, really good, subconsciously changing our hair seems like bad juju. There are times the changes we make in our hair work and times they don’t, but the fact is sometimes, our hair is the ONLY thing in our lives that we can control.

I’ll be honest with you, I hadn’t cut my hair since I sold the book. Don’t get me wrong, I’d trimmed it and colored the heck out of it, but things were going so great , I wasn’t looking for a change. But then about five months ago, my world got rocked in a terrifying and horrible way I can’t talk about without hurting someone dear to me. Before that, I’d been so adamant about keeping my hair the way it was, but I found myself looking at this young woman’s haircut and thinking, I’d really like that cut. And bangs.  AGAIN.  Would it have altered my circumstances? Crickett, my hairstylist, said an emphatic, NO and saved me from myself.

And she was right. Hair stylists listen to us, what we want in our hair and in our lives, our hopes our dreams, our greatest fears. My best advice to anyone contemplating a big change, a new do? Trust the force. Trust  the people who fix our hair and change our lives. Trust in the wisdom of hair.

.

Kim has gracious offered to give away 2 of her books today.  One to a lucky commenter and one for the commenter’s hair stylist!

Bottom Line:  I have an urge to run to the closest salon and get a consultaion.

And the Winners Are…

The Party’s Over…

Barbara Vey -- March 17th, 2013

the party's over

The 6th Annual Anniversary Bash is over, but I wanted to thank each and every one of you for stopping by and making it so special.

Be sure to stop by tomorrow for the list of winners.  Many thanks to all the authors and publishers who participated.

Bottom Line:  Enjoy your Sunday of rest.

Anniversary Bash 6: Romance Blowout!

Barbara Vey -- March 16th, 2013

Monaco

We have reached our final destination for the 6th Anniversary blog, Monaco.  A perfect location for Romance Blowout.  The place that made American movie star Grace Kelly a real princess when she married Prince Rainier.  Our party is in Monte Carlo famous for it’s gambling.  Enjoy a game of roulette.

.

Prince Rainier and Princess Grace

.

Heather Long is generously passing out Arcana Royale poker chips for Monaco.  Nancy Naigle says, “I’m bringing limited edition BarbaraVeyBash Casino chips. What will you do to get your hands on one of these amazing $1000 chips?”

Nancy Northcott says,  “I’ll bring champagne, chocolate caramels, and kazoos.”  I’m not sure there’s a lot of kazoos in Monaco.  Barbara McMahon is walking in with a kettle full of red hot Texas chili and pans of cornbread with melting butter.  Not sure if this is part of the local cuisine. Colleen Collins has Besame (“Kiss Me”) cocktails! Made with lime, raspberries, Agavero, Chambord and topped off with passion fruit juice, of course!  Karen Sandler has a chocolate fountain and all the goodies to dip into it–marshmallows, strawberries, Oreos, bananas, brownies. Mark Denham will be at the fountain to help you dip.

.aston martin

Lori Perkins and the Riverdale Avenue Crew are going to bring some Aperos (before dinner cocktails and snacks) of Limoncello and beautiful green and black olives.  LuAnn McLane has some yummy frozen rum runners. Rogenna Brewer is thinking tropical with Jamaican jerk chicken, Cuban sandwiches, Key lime pie and assorted cocktails (if that’s allowed) Bahama Mama, Rum Punch…and more.  Salena Laurence says, “I’ll bring some champagne and caviar to get the party started, and an Astin Martin because all good spies should drive one!”

roses

Natasha Blackthorne is giving everyone a crystal vase filled with a dozen red roses and a gift basket of bath salts and oils, one for each guest’s bedroom. A string quartet.

 .

.

.maroon 5

Elizabeth Staab wants to entertain us with Balloon animals!  Lauren Hunter is thinking a little bigger by bringing in Maroon 5.  The Nine Naughty Novelists brought a karaoke machine and a few cover models to keep us all entertained.  I’m assuming that’s for when Maroon 5 takes a break.  Zoe Monodee came in with heroes to die for!

antacids

Bertrice Small commented, “After a night of partying everyone is going to need a delicious Brunch come Sunday morning. I’ll be serving Eggs Bennedict, or scrambled eggs,, bacon, saussage, French Toast, fresh fruit salad along with coffee or tea. Come one! Come all! And we can dish the dirt over brunch about our editors. Hee Hee!.”  Valerie Mann has post-party pain relievers for those partygoers who overindulged!

Bottom Line:  Thank you all for an amazing 6 years…on to number 7.

Here’s the rules.  Leave any comment and get an entry to win one of the fabulous prizes.  You can comment more than once for more chances.  Winners will be picked daily and posted on the blog March 18th.  Winners will have one week to claim their prize.

Anniversary Bash 6: Contemporary, Historical, Erotica, E-books, Audio

Barbara Vey -- March 15th, 2013

DowntonAbbey

Friday brings us to Downton Abbey a fictional Yorkshire country estate of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era. History plays a big part in the story and shows the effect on their lives and on the British social hierarchy. We’ve lived through the sinking of the Titanic in the first series, the outbreak of World War I, and the Interwar period and the formation of the Irish Free State in the third series.  Feel free to socialize with those upstairs and downstairs.

carriage ride

Bronwen Evans offered a carriage for rides around the estate.  Courtney Sheets just put out English fairy cakes and honey mead for refreshments. Edie Ramer has Treacle Tarts and Crepes Francaise, served by handsome Downtown Abbey footman, Jimmy Kent.  Elizabeth Essex is wearing her best tea hat, and is bringing her well-bred, gracious southern demeanor, so she can teach everyone to smile and say, “Well, bless your heart,” to the Dowager Duchess when she gets snippy.  Mary Hughes has an old oil lamp that could do with a bit of a polish, but when the Downton Abbey downstairs maid lights it, its flame burns unnaturally bright…

Shana Galen will bring the Apple Charlotte. Poor Mrs. Patmore deserves a break. and even though her eyes are better now, she might be reluctant to try that recipe again.  Victoria Hinshaw came with her  “fine landau drawn by four dapple grays carrying fine champagne, smuggled into Britain ”

godiva

Natasha Blackthorne went all out with a huge white cake with vanilla cream frosting, decorated with sugared grapes, strawberries and Rainier cherries. Enough Godiva chocolates to fill a sideboard. Dozens of red, pink or yellow roses with crystal vases (Everyone will have a vase in their bedchamber, along with an assortment of bath salts and oils). White beeswax pillar candles with brass holders. A string quartet for dancing until dawn.

Lisa Mondello is bringing “An assortment of my favorite flavored coffees and 5 sexy Texas cowboys to help serve! Or cuddle. The choice is yours!”  But she’s not the only one thinking cowboy.  Barbara McMahon came with guitar playing cowboys.  Blythe Gifford’s sending the Brunson Clan to entertain by singing some wonderful Scottish Border Ballads.

cowboys

Cherise DeLand came with a TDH Comanche chieftain from south Texas, wearing a supple buckskin loin cloth (nothing else) and serving everyone great Texas Riesling and Lone Star beer with chips and queso!

Colleen Quinn set out beautiful roses.  Anne Tenino is also thinking decorations with crochet penises, so a few of those as table centerpieces. Lucy Felthouse just hung balloons, streamers and brought a delicious Victoria sponge cake.

Cameo says, “The Crawley family has a lot of money, but notably no pet dragons. They can borrow mine for today. I’m also bringing some old-fashioned mead and some pizzas (the dragons love pizza!).”  Heather Long is bringing a Uniformed officer.  Not sure why.  Jennifer Bernard came with a few of the hunky Bachelor Firemen just in case a fire breaks out. They’re guaranteed to heat the place up with or without a fire.  Christine Cayne is also coming with some really hot firefighters!

firemen

Carlene Love Flores brought Shirley Temples with extra cherries and a few fine Brits from 80′s bands to serve them up!  Debra Salonen is passing out lemon drops courtesy of her awesome bartender daughter.  Jaci Burton is pusher her Chocolate martinis.  Jane Godman came bearing my favorite Cucumber sandwiches (with the crusts cut off, of course) and dainty French macaroons.  Jeanne Lin says, “A plate of petit fours for tea. Because it doesn’t count as having cake if they’re small.”

Koko Brown says, “I’m bringing the sexy geek well versed in English history and proper etiquette. He also has a naughty side, which can only be revealed one layer at a time.”

sandwiches

Lori Perkins told me, “The Riverdale Avenue Crew (Lori, Don and our authors) are bringing a couple of trays of tea sandwiches carried by some extra footmen.”  Mary Ann Rivers brought a gorgeous, strong-calved, twinkle-eyed pedicab driver to take everyone on tours of the grounds while delivering flirty banter.  Nancy Naigle asked me, “I’m bringing miniature wedding cakes from Mac’s Bakery in Adams Grove. Pass these around, won’t you?”

Sabrina Jeffries brought a spread of delectable French cuisine for the party fare. Guests will have the opportunity to indulge in some delightful profiteroles, roast pigeon, flaky baguettes and the finest Bordeaux cognac. To finish the meal, un café to enjoy festivities late into the evening . . .  Sabrina Sol said, “To celebrate my erotic Regency series, I would love to bring a delightful spread of English Tea delicacies, including finger sandwiches, lemon curd cakes and clotted cream. And of course, Brandy for the gentlemen. Also, glittering bling for all.”  Our third Sabrina, Sabrina York has a couple of bottles of Cazadores Tequila, limes and salt shakers. Then everyone will have to take a shot every time someone says “Lady” or “Lord.”

Sarah Richmond is passing around amuse bouche, while Susan Jaymes has Butter Biscuits.   Tracey Devlyn says, “It’s time to really get this party in full swing–we’ve brought the wine! Upon arriving, we will have the servants decant several delicate white wines, a deep crimson bordeaux for the heart of the meal, and a delicious port to sip with dessert. Make sure the glasses are polished!”  Tracey Lyons brought a case of Zinfandel wine.  To finish things off Zelda Benjamin brought Gourmet hot chocolate.

Bottom Line:  Wondering how I can stay here at Downton Abbey and attend the SoCal Conference this weekend.

Here’s the rules.  Leave any comment and get an entry to win one of the fabulous prizes.  You can comment more than once for more chances.  Winners will be picked daily and posted on the blog March 18th.  Winners will have one week to claim their prize.
