What I Love About Books

Barbara Vey -- March 29th, 2012

The other day I wrote what bugs me about books, so today I thought I’d write about what I love about books.

1.  I love how they make me feel.  (Thanks romance)

2.  I love how most of the characters become like someone I’d want to hang around with.

3.  I love imagining myself living in different times and places.

4.  I love figuring out puzzles and who done it.

5.  I love picturing myself in the clothing of the time.

6.  I love knowing the secrets that the characters know.

7.  I love the adventures I’d never get to experience in my real life.

8.  I love being so engrossed that I don’t hear anything else around me.

9.  I love knowing that others enjoy the same thing I do so we can discuss it.

10.  I love to laugh, cry and yes, sometimes sing along with the characters.

This is my love letter to all the authors out there who have shared their imaginations and stories with me so I can escape, for a little while, into wondrous worlds.

What do you love about books?

Bottom Line:  The heck with Calgon.  Books…take me away…

The Hunger Games – Books to Movies

Barbara Vey -- March 26th, 2012

Talking to someone this weekend and not hearing The Hunger Games come up was pretty rare.  This highly anticipated movie scored a $155 million opening weekend.  While Twilight’s audience consisted of 80% women and girls, Hunger Games had that number around 61%.

I was at church yesterday, where they asked me to do a book signing.  A woman came up to me and was telling me that her 12 year old daughter wanted to read The Hunger Games.  After it was bought and read, mom had a go at it and loved it.  She told me she went to several stores only to find the second book sold out.  When she finally did find it, she immediately bought the third book in the series.  The mom was planning to take her daughter and 14 year old son to the movie, hoping, “He gets excited enough from seeing the movie to want to read the books too.”

Last week, at the airport, I saw a mother and teenage daughter reading.  The daughter had an e-reader, but the mom was reading The Hunger Games.  She’d stop everyone once in a while and say something about it, but her daughter would just smile and say, “Just wait until you get to Chapter 16.”  Talk about role reversal.  It was a joy to watch.

My son, Andrew, 29, called from Atlanta to tell me he saw it with friends.  “It showed on a half a dozen screens and they were all packed.  I loved it and while it didn’t follow the book exactly, what they did with it was fine with me.”  Now, you’d all know what an amazing statement that is if you understood that 6 months ago, Andrew never read a book for pleasure.  He listened to The Hunger Games in his car on the drive from Milwaukee to Atlanta.  And now he’s looking for another good book to read.

His road to reading actually started when he saw the movie trailer for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.  I saw the original Swedish version and enjoyed it, so he wanted to try to read the book before seeing the movie.  I really didn’t think he’d do it because I have never seen him read a book other than for school.  Well, he’s now read all three.

Since this whole books to movies to books thing works, I say make even more good ones.  If kids need an addiction, let it be books and I’ll be an enabler.  I hope schools wake up and start paying attention by having kids read books in school that would make them enjoy reading.  Personally, I’d like to The Scarlet Letter replaced (I had to read it 3 different times in my school life).  I think the trick is to let the kids find the books and get the adults excited about it.  And I know adults are excited about it because on Twitter and Facebook, everyone is talking about either seeing The Hunger Games or have already seen it.

Have you seen it or are planning on seeing it?  Do you know young people who have read the book and are excited to see it?  Do really good movies make you want to read a book or have you seen a good movie you’d like to see as a book?

Bottom Line:  Ok, maybe Andrew is 29, but he’ll always be a kid in my eyes.

What Bugs Me About Books

Barbara Vey -- March 23rd, 2012

I’m not sure why, but lately it seems more and more books are bugging me.  There are certain things that just take me out of the story and I just hate being yanked out when I’m engrossed in my little fantasy world.

I was reading a historical and suddenly the characters started doing things that were not appropriate for that Regency time period.  At least, not appropriate as compared to all the other historicals I’ve read.  There are certain rules of propriety that always seem to be followed so for an aristocratic father to force his daughter to have sex with the man she’s betrothed to before they are married has me scratching my head.

Next up was a paranormal.  Now I know they have their own rules, but breaking them in the middle of the book had me going back to make sure I read it right.  A spell was put on the house to keep people away from the heroine, but all of a sudden the house cleaners are there cleaning up.  How did they get through the spell when the police couldn’t?  And a lot of the time, expecially in romance, being bitten by a vampire is part of the sexual experience, so having the hero bite his mother was disturbing to me.

I read a mystery with such a convoluted plot that I almost threw it against the wall.  I don’t want a mystery that doesn’t give me any clues and then at the end introduces a brand new person and says, “Aha!  He did it!”  No fair!!

There was a thriller that had the characters going from one place to another in record time.  I hate having to stop and think, “Wait, wasn’t he just here…how did he end up there without anything being written about it?”  Don’t make me stop reading and go back to read a section again.

And my biggest pet peeve is a book that is marketed as a romance and doesn’t have a happy ending.  Not only does it get chucked in the trash, but I don’t mind telling my friends about it.  You don’t get to promise me a happily ever after and not deliver.

Authors make certain promises to readers and when they go back on that promise it’s like being deceived.  As a reader, I’ve come to have certain expectations and if you want me to continue to buy your books and read them, remember who you are writing for, readers.  Be proud of your product.

Well, now that I’ve got that off my chest, I’ll let you vent on what bugs you about books.  What sets you off and has you promising to never read another book like that again?  Have you ever had to go back and reread a section?

Bottom Line:  Off to start a new book that I hope to finish and feel good about it.

WW Ladies Book Club Blurbs

Barbara Vey -- March 21st, 2012

Yesterday, the Romance Writers of America announced that I’d be this year’s recipient of the Vivian Stephens Industry Award.  I’ll be presented the award in Anaheim at the annual RWA Conference in July.  This is an exciting and thrilling experience.  I’m honored beyond words and I’d like to thank everyone for their kinds words of congratulations on Facebook and Twitter yesterday.  Now enjoy what the WW Ladies have been reading.

Emily’s Captain by Shari Anton (E-Book)

Read by joysann

Captain Jared Randall Hunter has been sent behind Confederate lines to bring a Union colonel’s daughter to safety ahead of the Yankee march through Georgia. Abandoned through a broken engagement, Emily is preparing to leave the house in town for the home manor when, disguised as a rebel soldier, Jared finagles a way to escort her. Their prolonged company and the danger of capture by either army give Emily and her captain time to discover the best in each other, engendering trust and love between them.

Despite conforming to the mores of her time as best as she’s able, Emily’s independence and strength are assets that charmed both the hero and me. She’s a no nonsense woman who doesn’t hesitate to do what she must. Between her and the thoroughly captivating hero, this historical fiction makes the most of the two engaging characters on their dangerous journey. Sometimes charming, sometimes thrilling, sometimes suspenseful, Emily’s Captain makes a fascinatingly romantic read.

The Demon in Me by Michelle Rowen

Read by Joan

Eden Riley has some psychic ability she uses on a psychic hotline, assisting the police find a killer, and eventually to use in her own detective agency. But a demon named Darrack has taken up residence in her, and, while she tries various methods of evicting him, she also aids him in finding the witch who cursed him to his predicament centuries ago. Eventually they find her, but murder ensues, leaving Eden holding a stone that will make her a black witch and still with her demon inside.

This is the start of the fun, romantic and very busy Living in Eden trilogy. I’ve enjoyed Eden’s chaotic dilemmas, the challenges she faces, the sexy men and the many characters that color her life. The following two books are out, and I’ll be finding them quickly to finish this entertaining story.

Playing Dirty by Susan Andersen

Read by Heidi

Cade Gallari is enemy #1 in Ava Spencer’s eyes. He was the one who took her to bed in high school and told everyone he took pity on her because she was “fat”. Now 10 years later, Cade is back doing a documentary on the mansion that Ava inherited with her friends Poppy and Jane, from Agnes Wolcott (Miss A). He wants Ava to give him permission to use the mansion as well as hire her as the concierge for the film. The last thing that Ava wants is to be around Cade, but business is business. She denies that seeing Cade again turns her past demons to the forefront, but she isn’t about to let Cade get the best of her again.

I loved the way that the author mixed in the tug and pull of Cade and Ava, but also wove in a practical side to the reason they were together. Plus introducing interesting side characters with so many quirky things about them, I could see them clearly in my mind. I love when you have so much description that you see everything so well, it’s like running a movie in your head. This book really left me wanting to read the other stories of the Sisterhood characters. Another set of books for my TBR pile!

Proof of Life by Laura Scott

Read by Sheila

At first, the campus murder seems like business as usual, but it quickly gets personal for CSI investigator Shanna Dawson and security officer Quinn Murphy. The victim is Quinn’s half-brother. The case is linked to the disappearance of Shanna’s sister 14 years earlier. When Quinn discovers Shanna has a scary stalker, he refuses to leave her side, insisting they work together. As Shanna and Quinn investigate the related cases, they lean on their faith and each other.

I was first drawn to the stunning cover, then quickly pulled in to the story. It’s a page-turner! The combination of CSI investigator and security officer made it doubly exciting. When Quinn grew protective of Shanna, I melted. Can’t resist a guy like that.

Trusting Evil by M.A. Leo

Read by Michelle

Carly Rockett and her business partner and former boyfriend Mike Holtzer own a casting company for extras in movies.  Their newest assignment is for a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger being filmed at the Statesville Prison who’s most famous murderer, Richard Speck, is in residence.  In the summer of 1966, Carly met an intriguing German sailor, Richard Speck, who went on to slaughter eight student nurses near her home in South Chicago.  At the time, Carly and her two best friends were obsessed with the Beatles and believed one of them was destined to marry one.  They thought that their sailor knew the Beatles personally and would deliver their love letters.  The scars left by Speck have surfaced for Carly when she sees how he lives in prison, how he has freedom, lovers and loves his life.  Now her life is on course to make him pay and for the prison to be accountable to punish those who deserve it.  Her obsession and use of alcohol will propel her to her own personal Hell.

This was a riveting read full of history, strength and struggle.  Mary Leo who personally grew up just blocks from the townhouse where the nurses were killed, writes with a sense of ease and confidence about the times and facts.  A  true storyteller with a great grasp on detail and use of imagination that got me inside Carly’s mind and pain.  As Carly’s life unfolds I found myself emphasizing with the real life scars of Speck’s victims’ families and how life must have been for them.

Reunited Hearts by Ruth Logan Herne

Read by Heidi

Trent Michaels receives the shock of his life, when he returns home from his military career to find out he has a son he never knew anything about. Trent is torn between being the father that his son deserves, and forgiving the woman who turned his life upside down… Alyssa Langley. Alyssa had good reasons for why she felt she couldn’t tell Trent about his son, but she has more secrets to keep. Trent may need to find more spiritual support than he ever thought possible, to find love and forgiveness.

The way that Alyssa struggles with her own guilt, her obligations and her denial of her faith, makes her one of the most fascinating women characters I have read about in a long time. It made this story seem so real, especially in this day and age of reality television. My heart truly breaks for Trent and his realization that he is a father in an instant. I think the most heart warming is how all the characters have a big dose of reality mixed with their prayers. It made for such a wonderful read.

Fair Game by Patricia Briggs

Read by joysann

As Enforcer for the werewolves, Charles goes with Anna to Boston to help with the FBI investigation into serial killings that include werewolves as well as humans. When another kidnapping occurs, Anna and Charles determine that the Fae are being targeted as well. With evidence that the killer may also be some kind of preternatural, all of the talents and magics of the Alpha and Omega are needed as they race to find the new victim before it’s too late.

I am no longer amazed by the books Patricia Briggs writes because they are always fascinating, thrilling, and completely captivating. Fair Game, an Alpha and Omega novel that takes place in the Mercy Thompson world, is all that and more. Exciting, fast-paced, magical and surprising, I was unable to put it down till I finished it, and have already picked it up to read parts of it again. It looks to be a long, tantalizing wait until the next book in either series comes out to continue the story.

Bottom Line:  Now need to quickly lose 20 pounds and find a new dress for RWA.

Silken Sands Conference

Barbara Vey -- March 19th, 2012

View from my veranda

This weekend I attended the Silken Sands Conference in Pensacola, Florida.  I was so excited to go in March because it is usually about 30 degrees in Milwaukee.  So imagine my chagrin when I went to the airport and it was 70 degrees.  How could this happen since I spent the past couple of weeks rubbing my friends and family’s noses in the fact that I would soon be lounging on the sandy white beach?

Regardless, nothing beats the Florida sunshine. I was lucky enough to arrive a day early.  I went to lunch with conference chair Jillian Chantal and Carina Press editor, Angela James.  We ate at Peg Leg Pete’s.  I treated myself to a Kahlua colada while I closed my eyes and felt the tropical breezes.  We talked about kids and grand kids and left the business discussions for the next day.

One of my favorite parts of conferences is watching everyone arrive.  There is so much joy when old friends get together after a long absence and others who have only conversed online finally meet in real life.

I met up with some members of the GRW for lunch.  These terrific ladies have been taking good care of my son while he is going for his masters degree in Atlanta.  We lunched at the amazing Grand Marlin.  I’m telling you, the fish down here is incredible.  These writers have been spending the last week doing power writing in a group setting.  They tell me they are able to pound out quality work in record time without the distractions of home.  I say, whatever works is the way you should go, especially if there is a beach involved.

After registration, the workshops started and everyone was anxious to get started.  The evening session offered a dessert bar, door prizes and my kick off speech.  I was thrilled to get this over with so I could kick back and enjoy the rest of the weekend.  I loved speaking and shared my adventure in starting with PW and my journey since.  Luckily, I’ve had some humorous encounters, so I think everyone enjoyed it.

Conference Committee: Jillian Chantal, Elizabeth Perry, Jamie Farrell, Fran McNabb a/k/a Fran Fisher.

Next up was the agent/ editor panel.  They even put me on it as an industry professional.  The first question was “What are they looking for?”  They went down the line with the panel answering with everything from small town romances to westerns to historicals.  Mostly they want something new and fresh.  So when they got to me, I said I was looking for “A hot guy for my golden years.” I don’t think that ‘s too much to ask for.  But be careful what you say it public because a few minutes after I mentioned it, it was all over Twitter.

Saturday morning featured the nerve-wracking editor/agent appointments. In talking to the authors, many spent sleepless nights perfecting their pitches.  The really cool part was that the appointments were held on the patio overlooking the beach.  It was gorgeous and I would have found it hard to concentrate on anything but the waves crashing on the beach and a frosty drink with an umbrella in it.

WooHoo! Sold out!!

WooHoo! Sold out!!

There were  more workshops including one taught by a Wiccan.  She even brought voodoo dolls.  Lots of aspiring authors looking for classes to give them that extra edge to get their books published.  The it was time for the booksigning.  Unfortunately, it was St. Patrick’s Day and spring break.  The bookseller couldn’t get over the bridge to Pensacola because of the traffic and was quite late.  But, because this was my first official booksigning as an author, I was excited beyond words.  When they finally arrived, I could hardly contain myself.  I quickly sold out which is the most amazing feeling ever.

Beverley Kendall

Beverley Kendall

Saturday night was a terrific dinner and Beverly Kendall was the keynote speaker. She talked about her journey to become a published author.  While she admitted it wasn’t all smooth sailing, Beverly has broken into historical romance.  And she has decided to self-publish her next book which she is offering for free.  Just go here for a free download.  Be sure to let Beverly know how much you’ve enjoyed her book.

Awards were given for the Linda Howard Writing Contest and the night finished with all the incredible raffle baskets given away and, as usual, it seemed like the same people won multiple times.  How does that happen?

With Sunday morning being a travel day, many attendees left early.  Since my flight wasn’t leaving until 6 p.m. I slipped into a few more workshops and I ended my stay with Cynthia Eden explaining the difference between serial killers.  It was creepy yet fascinating.

My final lunch there was outdoors listening to the steel drums playing songs of Pina Coladas and Kokomo.  One of my favorite places to hold a conference.  Too bad they do it every other year.

Bottom Line:  I hope they save me a place on the beach for the next one.

Fantasy on the Bayou

Maggie Mae Gallagher and Maggie Shayne

Cub Reporter, Maggie Mae Gallagher, is the author of the Cantati Chronicles, a dark, first-person, urban fantasy series. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Maggie is an Editor with 5 Prince Publishing , an Event Manager for RomCon , an Author, and a Personal Assistant for hire to an expanding list of authors. Maggie is a member of Romance Writers of America, Missouri Romance Writers, Colorado Romance Writers and the Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal Chapter of RWA.

The Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal (FF&P) Chapter of Romance Writers of America  held its very first conference Fantasy on the Bayou in New Orleans, Louisiana, March 2nd through March 4th. Getting a conference off the ground is difficult to do in the best of times but during these economic times practically impossible. The FF&P Chapter is an online special interest chapter whose mission is promoting excellence in romance, futuristic, fantasy, time travel and paranormal fiction. The committee’s first task was finding a home for the conference. They could not have picked a better locale. New Orleans, Louisiana, long associated with paranormal, vampire and ghost lore, was the perfect spot.

Everything with the conference seemed to be moving full steam ahead until barely a month before the conference, the committee received news that their original keynote speaker had to cancel her appearance. That didn’t stop the FF&P conference committee. They forged ahead and found a new keynote speaker, Maggie Shayne. With 54 published novels and 30 novellas to her credit, along with 15 RITA Award Nominations and 1 win, Maggie Shayne brought her publishing experience and love for the craft to the Bayou. I had the honor of speaking with Maggie about her decision in accepting the keynote role with minimal time to prepare. “Every year I write a letter to Santa. This year I wrote that I wanted to visit New Orleans, one of my favorite cities, and that I wanted to be a keynote speaker at a conference. So when the conference people called me, I couldn’t turn it down.” Maggie’s keynote speech was poignant, pulled at my heart-strings and made me believe in my dreams. There was not a dry eye in the room by the time she finished. I know that I am grateful she decided to be a part of the conference.

The focus of this conference was bringing authors together to discuss what we love, paranormal worlds and writing about them. When I spoke with Leanna Renee Hieber she said, “The highlight of this conference was being brought together with fellow FF&P lovers in one of my favorite cities in all the world. The FF&P community as a whole is just full of the most kind, talented, generous and fun people in this whole industry and I loved every minute of being with them.”

One of the things that made this conference so wonderful was the intimate setting. I had the opportunity, as did many conference attendees, to engage with Agents and Editors in a much more personal manner. Becca Stumpf, a Literary Agent with the Prospect Agency  said, “It’s been lovely spending the weekend with a group of people so passionate about genre fiction – from a romance perspective and beyond. I loved that no one at this conference batted an eye when talking about writing about all things weird and fantastic – it was refreshing, and made for a fun and open conference environment. It’s a great opportunity for romance writers to connect with other genre writers, and network with the agents and editors who work specifically in those areas.”

On the final morning of the conference there was a book signing that was open to the public and many were on hand signing their latest works. I know my suitcases were bursting at the seams from all the books I purchased. Aspiring author Devon Alexander attended the conference with her daughter. “It was a small conference but great. I really enjoyed meeting other authors. The FF&P Conference Committee choose the perfect venue to host the conference. I definitely plan on attending next year.”

From ghost tours to the keynote address, this conference held something magical for every person who attended.  I plan on making the Fantasy on the Bayou Conference one of my annual conference events.

Maggie has even offered a giveaway to one lucky commenter, a copy of Nora Roberts Vision in White Book One of the Bride Quartet on Audio CD and Michelle Lang’s Dark Victory.

Bottom Line:  How did I miss this?  I love New Orleans (checking my calendar for next year).

And the winners are…

Orchids from PW

Orchids from PW

Well, the epic party week has come to an end, but what a week it was.  We traveled from Transylvania to Stonehenge to Iceland to an amusement park to Buckingham Palace and finally ending in Venice.  There was great food and drink, fun entertainment and amazing guests.  During that time 28,533 comments were posted to the blog.  Even with Ryan opening the window, it was incredible.

You all are who made this event as successful as it was.  I wish I could thank each of you individually, but since I can’t, please accept my undying gratitude for sticking with me these past 5 years.  I wouldn’t be here without you.  And, as promised, I’m posting the picture of the beautiful orchids I received from Publishers Weekly for my anniversary.  They were a delightful surprise.
