Lots of news today about literature in translation (see our Galley of the Day). Archipelago Books, the Brooklyn, NY-based publisher of literary translation, announced that it has been awarded a $25,000 grant from Amazon.com which it will use to fund the December 2010 publication of Stone Upon Stone by Wiesaw Myliwski and translated from the Polish by Bill Johnston.
You’d probably recognize an Archipelago book if you saw one–they’re all beautifully designed and printed, and sort of squarish in shape.
Amazon awards these grants to many nonprofit publishers and organizations. Other recipients of these grants include Open Letter Books, PEN American Center, Words Without Borders, Center for the Art of Translation, and Poets & Writers. Here’s more info on Amazon’s giving program.
