AudioGO Inks 10-Book Deal With Karin Slaughter

Adam Boretz -- January 14th, 2013

AudioGO signed international bestselling author Karin Slaughter to an exclusive seven-figure deal for the North American audio rights to her next 10 thrillers.

Slaughter and AudioGO first worked together in 2008 on the audio adaptation of Martin Misunderstood, which won an Audie Award.

“I am very excited to be continuing my relationship with the AudioGO team and appreciate the huge commitment they are making to my work,” Slaughter said in a statement. “They are superb at what they do, and I am continually impressed by them with each publication.”

Subsequent Slaughter titles include her recent New York Times bestsellers Criminal and Fallen, and the collection The Unremarkable Heart and Other Stories.

“All of us at AudioGO are thrilled to embark on this decade-long exclusive audio publishing arrangement with Karin,” said Vikki Warner, acquisitions editor at AudioGO, in a statement. “Her genuine fondness for and support of the audiobook make her a dream to work with. We can’t wait to see where her next 10 novels take us.”

AudioGO Hosts Kitchen Round Table Lunch

Adam Boretz -- December 14th, 2012

A place setting from the Kitchen Round Table Lunch.

AudioGO yesterday hosted an intimate lunch to celebrate the release of Kitchen Round Table — an audiobook featuring conversations with food luminaries such as Lidia Bastianich, Madhur Jaffrey, Judith Jones, Betty Fussell, and Deb Perelman.

At Felidia in New York City, Perelman, author of The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, and chef/restaurateur Marja Samsom met with members of the press to discuss Kitchen Round Table.

Up for discussion was everything from earliest food memories and how complicated recipes can be simplified to stories about memorable gourmet feasts and unforgettable meals.

Audio Excerpt: Zombies: A Record of the Year of Infection

Adam Boretz -- November 28th, 2012

If you like your audiobooks with a healthy dose of BRAINS, then AudioGO has what you need.

Adapted from a graphic novel, the audio edition of Don Roff’s Zombies: A Record of the Year of Infection is narrated by Stephen R. Thorne — but it’s more than your average zombie audiobook.

AudioGO worked closely with the author to incorporate the dialogue from his illustrations into a cohesive script. Then, the company’s senior sound engineer, Will Sibilia, went to work on the recording, creating an old-school finish with hisses, cracks, skips, and eerie background noises to evoke the feel of the Zombie Apocalypse.

But they weren’t done yet. Thorne also modulated his performance to include sighs, pauses, and heavy breathing — all to further the feeling of authenticity. The result is undeniably creepy:

Audio Reviews Spotlight: Dan Gets a Minivan

Adam Boretz -- September 26th, 2012

Today in Audio Reviews Spotlight, we take a peek at the nonfiction side and the audio edition of Dan Zevin’s Dan Gets a Minivan: Life at the Intersection of Dude and Dad.

The audiobook — which chronicles Zevin’s transformation from hipster to husband and father — is narrated by the author and available from from AudioGO.

Check out PW’s Starred Review below, and CLICK HERE for all of this month’s audio reviews.

Dan Gets a Minivan: Life at the Intersection of Dude and Dad
Dan Zevin, read by the author. AudioGO, library edition, unabridged, five CDs, 5 hrs., $54.95 ISBN 978-1-62064-060-9

Dan Zevin, whose humorous essays trace his evolution from urban hipster to suburban dad and husband and chronicle the mini-dramas of daily domestic life, delivers engaging narration in this audio edition. Among the highlights of Zevin’s performance is his irreverent and empathic rendition of his own colorful parents—long divorced from each other, but both still actively involved in the lives of their children and grandchildren. The narrator also effectively captures the disdainful tones of urbanites, as friends pronounce the word “suburb” with a hard-edged emphasis on the first syllable—as in “subpar” or “subtract.” Especially entertaining is Zevin’s performance of a scene in which his longtime Brooklyn neighbor rails against the domestic conformity of “adult swim” sessions at a suburban pool. The personal touches Zevin brings to his narration help keep the listening fresh even when the audiobook’s themes are rather familiar. A Scribner hardcover. (July)
